After Emergency Medical Call, Corona Firefighters Finish Patient's Yard Work - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Saturday, October 4, 2014 - 12:51pm

Corona, CA (KTLA) After Corona Fire Department crew treated a man who collapsed while mowing his lawn, firefighters sent him to the hospital and finished the yard work themselves on Wednesday morning.

The sweet story was posted to the Fire Department's Facebook page with a photo of two crew members sweeping up grass clippings on a residential sidewalk.

"Serving our City with Pride," the Facebook post read.

The crew from Engine 1 was responding to a call about a resident who lost consciousness while mowing his lawn, according to the post. First responders provided "ALS treatment" and sent the male patient to the hospital in an ambulance, the post stated, apparently referring to advanced life support service.

Firefighters stayed while the man's wife and baby prepared to go to the hospital, cleaning up and putting away the lawn mower, Fire Departments spokeswoman Lynn Mata said.

"We do that a lot. We look after our community it's pretty tightly knit," Mata said.

The patient lost consciousness for unknown reasons then fell, injuring his nose and bloodying himself in the process, Mata said. He was treated and transported but was "in pretty good shape" after the 11 a.m. emergency response, she said.

The incident followed a similar heart-warming in Santa Barbara over the weekend.

In that incident, firefighters trimmed an elderly woman's vegetation after she was injured by tripping over shrubbery.

Growing numbers of boys work as babysitters - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Is your son looking for a job? You may want to suggest he leave the mower at home and offer up his services as a babysitter!

With the holidays just around the corner, many boys are discovering that babysitting gigs can bring in big bucks.

Babysitting isn't just fun and games for high school student Sam Latzsch. It's a paycheck and a growing trend, according to the American Red Cross.

"Gender roles are becoming less defined. We've seen an increase in teen boys and young males register for our babysitting courses," said Grant Hansen with the Red Cross.

The numbers are expected to grow so much that the Red Cross is making changes to the curriculum to reflect the new demographic.

"We wanted to make sure they're well represented in the classroom courses, so many of our videos now feature young males going through their instruction," said Hansen.

Author Cary Siegel says young men are beginning to see the multiple benefits of babysitting, compared to more traditional jobs for a teen boy.

"One of them is the fact that, you know what, it pays pretty good. Two is it's a lot easier than the manual labor. Three, it's more flexible in terms of what they can do in terms of the hours and how do it. And you know what, four, it's probably a little bit more enjoyable," said Siegel.

But Hansen points out babysitting brings its own challenges.

"It may not be sweating and grueling like digging a ditch or mowing a lawn or being behind a counter all day, but you're very hands on as a sitter. You're playing with the kids, you're always mindful of safety and things like that."

House Calls: Autumn touches in the home - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The ever-shortening days, cooling temperatures and changing landscape of Calaveras County signal the recent arrival of autumn. Fall could be considered the quiet season the perfect lull between the spontaneous activity of summer and the traditions of the upcoming holidays.

Fall is also the season of harvest, beginning with the grape crush and ending with a Thanksgiving feast. The earth, grass and leaves are in the midst of their brilliant transformations. Take time to appreciate all the variations in the seasons tones and textures, and consider how to bring natures beautiful palette into your living spaces.

After removing any last traces of summer accents, begin to introduce new seasonal items in burnt orange, light browns, shades of gold, terra cotta and variations of tan, red and purple. These colors can be added to your interiors in accessories, fabrics and natural materials.

Candles provide a quick and easy change; they immediately convey warmth, comfort and a touch of fall color. Pull out all candlesticks, candelabras or lanterns and group them by material: brass, pewter, wood or iron. Fill them with colorful candles in autumn hues and display in groups of three or five on the sideboard, entry table or mantle. Mix or match colors and materials, depending on your preference. Intertwine the base of your arrangement with small branches of fall leaves, vines or berries.

As the nights become cooler, switch out your bed linens, rugs and window coverings for some with more weight and depth of color. Consider introducing flannel sheets or a down comforter to the bed. Accent pillows, shams and window coverings in rich fabrics like velvet, chenille, tweed or felt can be added now. Change out your towels in the bath and kitchen; add a heavier rug to your entry; fold a quilt at the foot of the bed or a nubby throw over the back of your favorite reading chair.

In the dining area, a tablecloth in fall tones will add warmth and softness, with a nod to the changing season. If you prefer the look of exposed wood, add a warm table runner instead, and top it with a large bowl of apples or persimmons.

Buy a single baby pumpkin, gourd or Indian corn cob each time you visit the produce aisle, and use these fresh seasonal pieces as decorative accents. Gather them together to display on a tabletop or scatter them around the house: a trio of Indian corn on a side table, a gourd used as a bookend or a lone miniature pumpkin on the guest room bedside table.

When doing it up for all, dont forget the yard or garden. Follow the example of Northeasterners, and use this time of year to decorate your yard before the harsh weather comes. Bring fall colors into your landscape with pots of yellow, gold or burgundy mums. Introduce decorative garden art like a rusty sculpture or tall metal sunflowers. Tuck a few pumpkins and other types of squash into planted beds or flower pots. Fill an old wheelbarrow with hay or pumpkins, prop an old rake against the oak tree, and fashion a scarecrow to oversee the area.

Pause and appreciate the relative simplicity of autumn. Revel in the ease and natural bounty that the season provides us and make the most of it in and around your home this fall.

Residents unhappy about Red Hill townhouses - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Not happy: Maurice Deveze, David Templeman and Stephen Gaffey with his son Jim are unhappy with the ACTPLA about the townhouses to be built in Red Hill. Photo: Jay Cronan

Red Hill residents have expressed their disappointment after ACTPLA approved plans for the first townhouses on a quiet street in the leafy suburb.

The ACTPLA delegate said the proposed development, criticised by oneresident aslooking like an ocean liner, would provide an "interesting frontage" and make a positive contribution to the streetscape of Borrowdale Street.

David Templeman, chairman of the streets' residents' association, saida meetingnext week would allow a decision on whether to appeal the approval to ACAT.

    "It is disappointing," he said.

"I don't think they've given due consideration to the streetscape and privacy concerns of residents."

The 28 objectionsto theplans on a short roadwith 19 propertiesincluded fearsthe buildings - four dwellings with four connected garages - would undermine the area's character and neighbours' privacy.

The decision, dated September 25, noted the existing dual occupancies on the street and the multi-unit developments in "close proximity" inthe same zone.

The delegate said landscaping out the front of the building, including a condition which required some semi-mature plants, would ensure the street'slandscape environment was enhanced.

Appeal for hill house - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Report by BECKY PARKER Saturday, October 4, 2014 2:00 PM

THE owner of a patch of amenity land in Weston is appealing to the Government inspector after his plans to build an eco-home were rejected by North Somerset Council.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The controversial plans to build the grass-roofed house on green space off Beechmount Close, a quiet cul-de-sac in the town, were thrown out by the authority earlier this year.

At the planning meeting, ward councillor Peter Bryant presented a petition to the council and residents made heartfelt pleas to turn the application down.

North Somersets refusal notice claimed the development would look out of place compared to neighbouring houses and would not enhance the landscape.

But landowner Mark Dodgson has written to the Government asking for the plans for a one-storey property to be revisited.

The field was awarded the status of amenity land because of its openness and visual significance to the community.

It had remained untouched for almost 35 years but Mr Dodgson began scraping up the grass and removing trees in 2012. The residents managed to halt the clearance and the council put a tree protection order over the land, but Mr Dodgson has pushed on with his planning application.

Land disputes: Govt urged to step in, carry out reforms - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Land disputes: Govt urged to step in, carry out reforms

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Government needs to intervene in land disputes involving all native customary rights and at the same time carry out land reforms to make land administration, particularly land alienation, fair, transparent and with integrity.

Star Sabah Chief Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, who is also Bingkor Assemblyman, however, said while it is to be lauded that the elected representatives from Ranau and Kundasang and the Director of Land and Survey have met and come out with statements, the land dispute remained unresolved.

Urging the State Government to intervene soonest and resolve the ongoing land dispute and standoff in Kg Malinsau, Wayan and Sinurai, Ulu Sugut, Ranau, he said the land dispute needed to be seen from the right perspective. "If the villagers/native inhabitants did not form a human barricade with the aid of volunteers of SSPR, an NGO from Ranau, the disputed land would have been totally cleared and destroyed by now.

"Moreover, according to the native villagers, there were no ground surveys and no boundary markers in the disputed land as alleged by the authorities that a proper survey was done," he said.

Dr Jeffrey said that even then it did not stop the cutting down of about 300 rubber trees by the intruding mob with more than 100 foreigners and watched by the police with their vehicles and lorries ready to arrest and cart away the native villagers. "It was not just a case of clearing land for their proposed site office as allegedly reported.

"Luckily, there were no untoward incidents and eventually good sense prevailed and the destruction was stopped pending further negotiations. "Hopefully, a final resolution can be achieved with the native villagers getting to keep their lands and rubber trees that are not destroyed," he said in a statement here Saturday.

Dr Jeffrey said to resolve the land mess in Ulu Sugut, Ranau, and in many similar cases, the Government must intervene to resolve the land dispute and it is hoped that the Government will do so for the rights and welfare of the native villagers.

At the same time, he proposed that the State Government implement land reforms, including respecting and acknowledging native land rights by establishing clear-cut provisions for safeguarding of NCR and other land rights; mandatory provisions for ground survey/inspection and inquiry before land applications are considered; establishing of a Land Tribunal and if possible a Land and NCR Commission and a Native Land Foundation; making provisions for court proceedings to be allowed to challenge disputable decisions of the Director of Land and Survey and Collector of Land Revenue; widen the scope of land use of Native Titles so that the natives get better valuations on their lands and for development without sacrificing native lands to be converted to country leases.

"I hope to propose some suggestions at the next State Assembly sitting in November and hope that land administration to safeguard native customary rights can be further strengthened," he said.
