NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- National Grid officials picked a home in suburban North Syracuse to talk about what lies ahead this winter, and the basic news was good.
"Based on last year's prices and, certainly, assuming normal weather, a typical residential customer, who would ordinarily use about 711 therms during heating season a normal -- and our heating season is roughly November through March -- would have paid about $619 last winter. At this winter's projected commodity price, the same amount of usage would cost about $554," said Melanie Littlejohn, a National Grid regional executive.
National Grid is applauding homeowners like Brendan Whalen, who bought his own refrigerator. People they say have take steps to reduce their energy costs by reducing usage. National Grid is offering rebates when aging home equipment is replaced.
"High-efficiency furnaces and boilers, programmable thermostats, high-efficiency hot water heaters, including tankless water heaters. Water heater insulation and pipe insulation. And the recycling of refrigerators and freezers," said Tom Baron, a senior program manager with National Grid.
And even as prices have fallen, National Grid says some consumers may be able to cut an even better deal.
"Customers do have an option. And they have an option to choose from a variety of energy suppliers, some of whom now offer fixed price contracts," Littlejohn said.
So, the general outlook for homeowners like Whalen is positive. But, there is still one major question mark.
That is just how severe the winter will be and that could force us all to toss the more optimistic forecasts.

Alpine Tabernacle marks 100 years -
October 1, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
It's a 100th birthday party and everyone is invited.
The Alpine Tabernacle at 110 E. Main St. in American Fork was opened in 1914. In celebration of its centennial, there will be tours of the building Oct. 11, and a fireside and program featuring former LDS Relief Society General President Julie B. Beck on Oct. 12.
The Alpine Tabernacle is the last tabernacle remaining in Utah County.
The Alpine Stake was organized Jan. 13, 1901, and had been part of the Utah Stake, which took in the entire valley. The Alpine Stake included the north part of Utah County, covering what now is Lindon to Cedar Valley.
All presidents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Joseph F. Smith to Thomas S. Monson have spoken at the tabernacle's pulpit, either as presidents or apostles.
"Ten of the men who have served as presidents of the church spoke here," said Allen C. Christensen, who wrote a history of the tabernacle.
"The sacrifices that went into the building were rather remarkable."
Sacrifices included not only the monetary contributions, but the volunteer labor. The cost of the building was $81,254. The four wards in American Fork were asked to contribute half of those costs.
In November 1914, there was an autumn festival to help finish paying for the building.
Christensen quoted a story from the American Fork Citizen, which told about the festival and put the monetary amounts into perspective.

Backridge Tree Service is always committed to adhering to the highest level of safety possible. They are always looking for new ways to make their job safer and easier for their customers and their employees. In order to increase their level of safety, certified arborist Rob Calley recently earned a prestigious safety credential from the Tree Care Industry Association.
Calley is now a Certified Treecare Safety Professional (CTSP). This distinction is highly regarded in the tree service industry and Calley is one of only 1,300 with the credential nationwide.
The CTSP credential carries with it an obligation to foster a culture of safety in tree care companies above and beyond the norm. Its focus on training, communication and learning make it very valuable as a resource for change in a dangerous and often overlooked profession.
"I am humbled by the challenge of this credential to help guide not only my company but the other hard-working companies in our local area, said Calley. Setting the tone for a new culture of safety in this old school market will be tough."
About the company: Backridge Tree Service, Inc. is a specialty tree company serving residential, commercial and municipal customers in the Florida panhandle. The company was founded in 1998. Backridge Tree Service concentrates on tree pruning and trimming, preservation and tree removal, but they also provide stump grinding, tree installation, tree preservation and any other tree-related needs. They do not apply pesticides, and they leave lawn work, landscape construction and irrigation work to others. All of their tree pruning and tree removal jobs are supervised by their professional arborists. They currently have two full-time ISA Certified Arborists on staff, Rob Calley and David Whitley. For more information about Backridge Tree Service, contact the company today by calling 850-939-8533 or visit their website at http://www.backridgetreeservice.com/.

SILVER CITY >> Syzygy Tile and Mule Creek Adobe, two Grant County manufacturers, are participating in the nationwide Manufacturing Day on Thursday. Both manufacturers are offering tours of their facilities for anyone who wants to get a glimpse of what their processes are like.
Jennifer Sinsabaugh, operations director for Manufacturing Extension Project, said 78 manufacturers are officially listed in Grant County. She said the five top manufacturing industries in the county are concrete, paving and asphalt manufacturers; commercial printing manufacturers; research and development and engineering service manufacturers; food product and bakery manufacturers; and furniture manufacturers. The businesses list themselves through Dunn and Bradstreet, so Sinsabaugh said there may additional manufacturers in Grant County who are not officially listed with the government.

The national effort was designed to showcase modern manufacturing and generate interest in engineering, design or production careers. According to a news release provided by Manufacturing Extension Project, about 30,000 New Mexicans are employed in the manufacturing sector.
Syzygy Tile employs about 20 people in downtown Silver City. Patrick Hoskins, showroom manager for Syzygy Tile, said the downtown business is getting involved in Manufacturing Day because they want to stress that their work is about employing people, not about automation.
"We're doing it by hand with employees, not big machinery," Hoskins said.
Hoskins will lead the tours, which will get started at 10 a.m. Thursday and continue each hour until 2 p.m. The tours will take about 40 minutes and workers will be making tiles as they usually do. Visitors will get a first-hand look at what really goes on behind the scenes at Syzygy Tile.
