To satisfy consumer demand for fresh, affordable produce and other horticultural products throughout the year, growers are increasingly turning to indoor growing operations. Growers are using indoor hydroponics and aquaponics systems that are more efficient in producing year around yields with out the threat of droughts, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies from our depleted farm lands. Such indoor operations provide a grower the ability to more precisely control for temperature, humidity, water and lighting. Artificial lighting, is a key component of indoor growing facilities because it is crucial to healthy and rapid plant growth and can impact other aspects of the operation like temperature, space requirements and growth cycles.
Artificial lighting for indoor growers and farmers has never scene a more exciting age for LED grow light potential due to the recent cutting age advancements in LED intensity output and new phosphor blend tailored wavelengths.
Traditionally, artificial lighting has been supplied by high intensity discharge (HID) fixtures with metal halide (MH) and high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps, and to a lesser extent, T5 or fluorescent bulbs all of which were sufficiently economic and readily available.
Naturally, growers continue to search for ways to reduce operating costs while improving growth rates and yields of crops. A new phosphor blend based LED lighting technology is achieving these goals in Asia and is now available to U.S. growers.
Among these traditional light sources, no one type of bulb has satisfied the needs of growers. This is because plants use light to grow with the help of pigments, the most common of which and arguably most important to plant growth is chlorophylls a and b.
Plants have other photosynthetic pigments, known as antenna pigments such as the carotenoids which also absorb light and have a significant role in photosynthesis. The chlorophylls have two light absorption peaks one in the red region (700nm wavelength) of the light spectrum and the other in the blue region (400 nm wavelength)the range between these wavelengths is commonly referred to as the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) range.
Comparing LED and HPS Plant Lighting Systems. For this comparison, intensity and efficiency is expressed in micromole photons per second (mol/s). Research at universities and applied research stations demonstrated that the rate of photosynthesis is related to the amount of photons emitted between 400 700 nm, called Photosynthetic Photon Flux (PPF) which is a way of measuring if a light source is suitable for photosynthesis. This is expressed in micromole photons per second (mol/s). The higher the PPF value per Watt, the more efficient the light source for plant growth. In the table below, PAR FORCE LED lights are the most efficient, providing the highest PPF per watt.
PAR FORCE LED lighting systems are able to provide higher intensity light at comparable power consumption levels because they are constructed with smaller, more efficient .05 milliamp LEDs that provide the intensity of larger two to three milliamp LEDs commonly used in competing products, and do so at lower, more light-quality stable operating temperatures. In addition, PAR FORCE LEDs use a superior combination of a single blue LED and proprietary phosphor coatings to maximize PAR spectrum. These key differences are why PAR FORCE LEDs are rated to provide the highest intensity by the United States Department of Energy. This higher intensity provides higher PPF which translates to increased efficiency at providing PAR. In so doing, PAR FORCE LED fixtures are providing larger yields and growth rates for the same energy consumption.
Perhaps most importantly, LED related data is continuing to be amassed by research institutions and proactive commercial growers that show increase growth rates and yields of a variety of commercial crops.

More than 5 years of experience would be required before an architect or engineer can work in other Southeast Asian countries

MANILA, Philippines Newly licensed Filipino engineers and architects need years of experience first before they could find a job in other Southeast Asian countries once the regional economic bloc integrates next year.
Thousands of engineers and architects pass the government-regulated licensure examinations every year. In October, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced that 1,532 passed the electronics engineer licensure examination, while 2,502 passed the electronics technician examination. Earlier in January, 793 passed the Architect licensure examination.
But for them to be accredited to work in another Southeast Asian country under an integrated ASEAN economy, architects would need to have at least 10 years of experience, while engineers would need 7 years of minimum experience, according to Angeline Chua Chiaco, acting PRC chairperson.
They need to have a substantial involvement in projects during the years of their experience, Chiaco said during the congressional committee on ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) integration hearing on Tuesday, October 28.
PRC has already signed mutual recognition agreements (MRAs) with some of its regional counterparts to allow Filipino professionals to practice their occupations in other Southeast Asian countries once the ASEAN integration begins to take off end 2015.
ABS partylist representative Catalina Leonen-Pizarro, chairperson of the House committee on ASEAN integration, has already drafted a resolution urging President Benigno Aquino III to implement the MRAs signed by the Philippines.
For Pizarro, the MRAs serve as safety nets to protect the Philippines professional workforce from tight competition with its neighbors, as the same minimum years of experience would also apply to ASEAN professionals who would opt to practice in the Philippines.
ASEAN member-states agree to a free flow of skilled labor within ASEAN, as included in the economic blueprint, one of the 3 blueprints adopted for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

With its red, perforated aluminum "rain screen" and elongated oval shape, this quirky office building for a large "outdoor advertising" company in New Delhi, India, was intended to resemble a thumbprintthough it actually looks more like a watermelon. Or maybe a half-gutted fish. Designed by local firm Anagram Architects, "The Digit" building has a swirling ceiling in the lobby that evokes a thumbprint, and, according to the architects, a faade with "the split second impact of a roadside billboard." It's hard to disagree.
In the holes of the building's face are tiny, colorful "pixels" that rotate as the wind blows. The overall effect is probably meant to resemble an artisanal LED screen, though it makes the screen look full of melon seeds. As such, the high-design approach to a pixelated thumbprint inadvertently makes this watermelon-like building a piece of literal architecture. But, hey, who needs buildings that actually look like the random objects they were supposed to resemble, anyway?

TULSA, Oklahoma -
About 4,000 earthquakes have rattled Oklahoma this year, and Tuesday at the capitol, lawmakers discussed a legislative study on earthquakes and fracking.
In Tulsa, first responders, educators and architects went back to class Tuesday to get a lesson from FEMA on earthquake preparedness.
The experts said whether it's a tremor, a rattle or the big one, buildings can easily be damaged. Tuesday's lesson was about spotting that damage and preventing injuries.
FEMA says they look at everything from the foundation to the way the lights are hung.
Most of Oklahoma's quakes have been minor, but nearly ten percent were a three-magnitude or greater.
Even the slightest shake can affect the structural soundness of buildings.
People need to know what kind of building they are in. Is it masonry? Is it concrete block, is it steel structure? And what resiliency does it have an earthquake event," Roger Jolliff, with the Tulsa Emergency Management Agency asked.
FEMA says knowing the basic facts will help first responders, educators, architects and builders.
Garfield, Grant, Logan, Oklahoma and Payne counties in central Oklahoma have been hit by two-dozen 4.0 or greater quakes, but seismologists call eastern Oklahoma's quakes light.

Rochester, N.Y. Construction will soon begin on a new train station in Rochester.
The new $30 million Intermodal Transportation Station is slated to open in 2017. It will be larger and have more retail space plus higher level platforms. Also, additional seating and more accessibility for people with disabilities.
The new station is expected to create about 200 jobs. The current temporary station on Central Avenue has been open since 1978.
Congresswoman Louise Slaughter has been pushing for the new station for more than two decades.
Slaughters opponent in the race for the states 25th congressional district, Mark Assini, released a statement saying in part, We must prioritize limited resources to repair our outdated, aging and unsafe roads and bridges. Passenger rail funding is the wrong priority at the wrong time.
The election is November 4.

The new 40,000-square-foot RH West Hollywood, The Gallery on Melrose Avenue may feature classical columns and a grand staircase, but the retail concept is designed to reflect everyday scenarios at home.
"All of the lifestyle spaces are designed to approximate residential scale," explained Sausalito-based architect James Gillam during a recent tour of the new showroom.
Unlike some furniture stores, bedroom, living room and bathroom vignettes are not installed in separate categories. Here, bedrooms merge into adjacent bathrooms, just as they might in a home. The objective, Gillam said, is to help homeowners visualize how the pieces will work in their own living spaces.
Our vision is to create an environment that blurs the lines between residential and retail, interiors and exteriors, offline and online, and celebrates the creative spirit of West Hollywood and the Los Angeles Design District, Restoration Hardware Chairman and Chief Executive Gary Friedman said in a statement.
Although the gallery setting concept may be new, the trademark Restoration Hardware goods remain: masculine tufted leather sofas and club chairs, elegant monochromatic linen furnishings and opulent lighting among them. Additionally, the store will feature a Ben Soleimani rug showroom, an interior design studio and a Bellocq organic tea atelier.
Perhaps the Melrose Avenue store's most striking detail, however, is its third-floor rooftop garden. The 10,000-square-foot space, shown above, resembles a park with its grove of olive trees, decomposed granite walkways, concrete fire pits and raised paver stones. The tranquil space, which is furnished with comfortable outdoor seating, is open to the community as a public space and will be available for special events.
RH West Hollywood, The Gallery on Melrose Avenue, 8564 Melrose Ave., Open Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sundays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Valet parking. (310) 652-0323.

Work on Arthurs home began on September 15th and was completed mid-October. Universal Roof & Contracting partnered with ABC Supply, who generously donated the shingles and much of the renovation materials. The scope of work includes a new roof (including carport) and complete decking replacement. New safety lights and structural supports were installed while curb appeal was enhanced with complete exterior painting, yard clean up and restoration. The interior of the home received insulation, extensive ceiling and drywall repair, and ceilings were revived with a fresh coat of paint.
Arthur lives in a modest single-story cinder block home by himself. A former taxi dispatcher, Arthur is no longer able to work due to his disability. He depends on his social security and the support of those around him. During what was to be a simple corrective retinal eye surgery, advanced glaucoma was discovered and led to complete blindness within months. Completely blind since 2013, Arthur gets a ride to a small neighborhood park about a mile from his house where he attends an outdoor church. He takes classes twice a week to help him with everyday tasks he can no longer do because of his disability. He has a bubbly, optimistic attitude and is always quick to laugh.
Our family, here at Universal Roof & Contracting, has always contributed to the improvement of the lives and circumstances of those around us, says Jared Mellick. From food donations to veteran benefit programs, family members and employees alike have partnered over the years with community projects to impact our area residents in a positive way. Now, as a growing company, we've established the Universal Contracting Community Works division with hopes to accelerate our efforts to see restoration, healing and progress come to the lives of residents in the communities we touch through prayer and the purposeful work of our employees and associates.
Universals staff is driven by a principle from Proverbs 21:26: ...the righteous give and do not hold back.

The author has posted comments on this articleTNN | Oct 29, 2014, 05.34AM IST NEW DELHI: French aircraft giant Airbus said on Tuesday it has partnered with Tatas to bid for the Indian Air Force's Avro replacement programme, marking the first tie-up after the government raised the foreign investment limit in the defence production sector to 49% to boost manufacturing.
The move is expected to lead to the country's first manufacturing unit of a military transport plane by the private sector. TOI was the first to report on October 26 about the possible tie up between Airbus and Tatas.
Airbus Defence and Space, a wing of the Toulouse based aircraft maker will team up with Tata Advanced Systems (TASL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Sons. TASL is the strategic aerospace and defence arm of the Tata group.
"The subsequent 40 aircraft will be manufactured and assembled by Tata Advanced Systems in India. This will include undertaking structural assembly, final aircraft assembly, systems integration and testing, and management of the indigenous supply chain," the statement said.
Experts say the government's move to raise FDI limit in the defence production is expected to witness several more tie-ups and provide a boost to domestic manufacturing as well as create jobs. This is also expected to improve supply of defence equipment. The Modi government has launched a massive "Make in India" campaign to raise the share of manufacturing and is seeking to ensure that the country emerges as a hub for quality low-cost manufacturing.
Several domestic players such as Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries to Mahindras and Bharat Forge have entered the defence industry, a segment dominated by imports.
"It is a landmark for the development of aircraft manufacturing capability in India, now that Tata Advanced Systems is poised to take this step towards building entire aircraft in India," S Ramadorai, chairman,Tata Advanced Systems was quoted as saying in the statement.
Airbus Defence and Space is a division of Airbus Group formed by combining the business of Cassidian, Astrium and Airbus Military and employs 40,000 employees. In August, the Union cabinet approved raising the FDI in the sensitive defence sector and opened up railway infrastructure to foreign firms. The cabinet had also decided that FDI beyond 49% would be allowed in state-of-the art defence equipment manufacturing, with technology transfer under Indian control and management.
