MERRILLVILLE | For more than 40 years The Patio restaurant has been a landmark Merrillville restaurant.
It has hosted weddings, showers, banquets and numerous political events. In its heyday it was the favored place for politicians to meet.
But, as of Jan. 31, the restaurant, well-known in Northwest Indiana for its seafood and steak, will close its doors at 7706 Broadway for financial reasons, co-owner Debra Batistatos said. The last day the dining room will be open is Friday. There will be two final pre-scheduled events held Jan. 31.
Batistatos said anyone having an event scheduled after Jan. 31 is being notified of the closing and deposits will be refunded.
Batistatos and her husband, Nick, took over the restaurant from Nick Kaiafas in October 2006.
We appreciate all the people who have been our regulars and people that have supported us over the years, certainly our employees that have stuck by us, Batistatos said.
About 15 to 20 part-time employees will lose their jobs, Batistatos said.
It was a rough decision made with a heavy heart that we finally had to say that we were going to do it, Batistatos said.
Plans for the restaurant are uncertain at this time, Batistatos said.
Longtime local politician Lake County Auditor John Petalas often frequented The Patio during its heyday. Petalas held and attended many fundraisers there.

The holidays are long gone and spring won't be here for ages, so it's finally time to get some stuff done around the house. Here are a handful of apps to help you chip away at that ever-growing honey do list of yours.
Make sure Houzz Interior Design (Android, iOS) has a spot in your collection. For starters, there's absolutely no manual labor involved. The app merely features ideas by way of some four million photos of rooms in houses that are far nicer than yours, along with products to buy, ideabooks to flip through and project articles to read. Hopefully you'll be inspired to finally re-tile your bathroom. At the very least, you can procrastinate for a few weeks while you make your way through this gargantuan app.
Take Paint Harmony (Android, iOS) for a spin. You take a photo of the room you're looking to recolor and the app lets you slap a virtual coat of paint on the walls. You can choose from built-in color swatches or the app will grab the colors from a favorite image of yours, should you want to paint your bedroom the exact color of those mountains you saw in Switzerland. Paint Harmony's technology is able to "paint around" mirrors and shelving you have on your walls and automatically adjusts how your paint job will look based on the lighting conditions in the room.
Load up PlanGrid (Android, iOS). The app stores all your blueprints, letting you create punchlists and track issues room by room. You can attach photos to each room, along with accompanying descriptions of what needs to be done (or fixed).Your notes sync to the PlanGrid site and any other devices running the app, so everyone working on your project is on the same page. You can upload up to 50 PDF-based blueprint sheets for free to the site, which should be plenty for most projects.
Multi Measures(Amazon,Android) might do the trick. The app sports 12 measurement tools, including a compass, a sound meter, a stopwatch, and even a vibration-sensing seismometer. But we're most interested in the plumb bob, surface level, bubble level, ruler, and protractor tools for putzing around the house. The rest are just icing on the cake. Whatever the case, it sure beats downloading 12 different apps. Note that thereis an iOS version, but it costs 99 cents, and this is Free App Friday. So this is awkward.
Use Smith (Android, iOS) to hire someone who knows what the hell they're doing. You snap a few photos or shoot some quick video of the work you need done, and the service collects bids from pre-screened contractors. Within 24 hours, you get the three best bids to choose from, at which point you can schedule the job. The service is available in 24 major U.S. cities, and you can read reviews of potential contractors or have a staffer guide you through the process if you're on the fence.

We take it for granted that outdoor lights are there to help keep America moving after the sun goes down. But the outdoor lighting when you drive your car down the road at night, cheer for your favorite baseball team, or load groceries into your car after work uses energy and takes a bite out of budgets in cities and towns across the country.
Outdoor lighting in the U.S. will consume enough energy to power 6 million homes this year, costing cities about $10 billion annually.
That is why we are working with mayors to deploy the latest technologies to determine how best to light their cities while saving money. Using today's new technologies, local governments can cut their outdoor lighting bills by 50 percent or more. Today we are launching the Presidential Challenge for Advanced Outdoor Lighting, and tripling the DOE Better Buildings program goal of upgrading 500,000 poles to 1.5 million, to encourage more mayors to lead their cities with this win-win solution.
Through the Better Buildings Outdoor Lighting Accelerator, the Presidential Challenge for Advanced Outdoor Lighting will work with dozens of municipalities to accelerate the adoption and use of high-efficiency outdoor lighting, driving carbon pollution reductions in communities across the nation. Given that streetlight systems can account for up to 60 percent of a citys electric utility bill, more are taking advantage of the savings that come with upgrading outdoor lighting.
LED light bulbs are an example of a lighting success story that, when taken to the streets, makes a lot of sense. The technology has rapidly improved over the past several years, and the price has dropped. As the technology advances, communities are installing LEDs, and showcasing market acceptance and satisfaction with the technology. Some communities are showing even greater energy savings as much as 70 percent more with lighting controls. Together with new light bulbs, advanced lighting systems are paying off.
We are excited to recognize the cities stepping up to the Presidents Outdoor Lighting Challenge. Through the Better Buildings Outdoor Lighting Accelerator, we are combining the technical expertise at the Energy Department with the shared experiences across a network of leading cities which you can be a part of to accelerate the deployment of highly efficient lighting, while helping you realize energy and cost savings for your communities.
Dan Utech is the Deputy Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change.

LED lighting manufacturer Evluma announces that the DesignLights Consortium (DLC) has listed its upgraded AreaMax outdoor area security light product. The recent upgrades include integrated photocontrol and anti-corrosion coastal materials options, and a new sleeker, lighter housing that increases the products overall architectural appeal and ease of installation.
DLC certification is the nationally recognized gold standard for outdoor lighting products, said Keith Miller, CEO of Evluma. Many utilities, both large and small, require that products deployed in their networks be listed on the DLC Qualified Products List (QPL).
In order to be listed by the DLC, luminaires are tested according to light output in lumens, wattage, efficacy (lumens/watt - a measure of how efficient the source is in converting electricity to light), CRI (color rendering index a measure of how a light source can accurately reflect the true colors of an object), and CCT (color temperature a measure of how the color looks to the eye). Thermal stress testing results are also submitted for DLC qualification. By reviewing the numbers for a particular lighting product, and comparing products (which is possible via the DLC website http://www.designlights.org), customers can make an informed choice as to which luminaires will serve their needs from a technical perspective.
About Evluma Formed in 2008, Evluma is committed to developing affordable, long-lasting and environmentally low impact LED lighting solutions that fundamentally change the landscape of the outdoor utility lighting market. Because of the initial market success of AreaMax, Evluma moved in July, 2014 to a new lean manufacturing facility in Renton, Wash., increasing the companys production capacity fivefold. Lean methodologies enable Evluma to deliver larger volumes of high quality products with shorter lead times.
AreaMax is a recognized winner of the 2013 NGL Outdoor Solid-State Lighting Design Competition in the Local Residential Roadway Category.
About the DLC The DesignLights Consortium (DLC) is a project of Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP), a regional non-profit founded in 1996 whose mission is to serve the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic to accelerate energy efficiency in the building sector through public policy, program strategies and education. The DLC promotes quality, performance and energy efficient commercial sector lighting solutions through collaboration among its federal, regional, state, utility, and energy efficiency program members; luminaire manufacturers; lighting designers and other industry stakeholders throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Over its 14 year history the DLC program has driven the lighting market towards innovation by providing information, education, tools and technical expertise for cutting edge technologies. Since 2010, the DLC has administered the Qualified Products List (QPL), a leading resource that distinguishes quality, high efficiency LED products for the commercial sector. Today, the QPL sets the bar for efficiency program incentives across the U.S. and Canada while informing manufacturer product development.

Security lighting products have a buyer power score of 3.2 out of 5. According to IBISWorld analyst Sean Windle, this score reflects a mix of favorable and hindering conditions existing in the market that have influenced buyer power in the three years to 2014. During the period, strengthening business activity across major downstream industries and rising input costs have lifted up prices. Buyers in various economic sectors, particularly construction and manufacturing, have increased their production capacity and revived construction projects. As buyers have increasingly started investing in upgrading their facilities with more technologically advanced lighting fixtures, demand for security lights has picked up, causing prices to follow suit. In the three years to 2017, surging construction activity will facilitate demand for security lights, while rising raw material prices will raise input costs, prompting prices to rise. Still, rising import penetration will warrant strong domestic price competition.
Despite rising product prices, low product specialization and switching costs buoy buyer negotiation power. There are multiple types of security lights in the market, including motion-activated, dusk-to-dawn and solar security lights. Although there are some exceptions among specialized products, most security lights are homogenous across suppliers by class. As a result, low product specialization and a plethora of viable suppliers provide buyers with a stronger hand in price negotiation and make it easier to switch suppliers without fear of incurring significant financial losses, says Windle.
Alternatively, the lack of substitutes and rising market share concentration diminish buyer power. In the three years to 2014, market concentration has increased slightly as large suppliers have acquired smaller competitors, thus gaining greater control over market prices. Examples of major operators include General Electric Company, The Home Depot and Lowe's Companies Inc. More players are projected to enter the market, but consolidation activity among suppliers will likely continue as they seek to expand their product offerings and customer base in the next three years. Growing market share concentration can hurt buyer power by lessening price competition. For more information, visit IBISWorlds Security Lighting procurement category market research report page.
