Matthew Swatsky, a computer engineer turned product manager for Lutron's smart home products, has opined that today, smart home devices are still somewhat a pricey set of proprietary products, although someday, the smart home may be the norm. Slowly opening up to industry standards, various connected devices are inching closer toward an ideal future.
Lutron has been wiring homes since the 1980s. In the 1990s, it rolled out Clear Connect, its own wireless technology now in its fifth generation.
"We're in the early stages of the connected home," said Swatsky, who is attending CES 2015 this week. "In the early 90s, custom cabinets were an upgrade. Now they are standard. The connected home may follow that trend."
Before we get there, AV and security products need to work better with the kind of lighting, motorised shades and HVAC controls Lutron makes, and everybody has to interoperate with everyone else.
Lutron has been taking its own small steps in that direction. Its proprietary 433MHz wireless systems now work with a WiFi thermostat from Honeywell, and Lutron recently agreed to support the Google Nest thermostat.
Matthew Swatsky shows some of Lutron's Caseta Wireless gadgets.
The company ships Android and iOS apps for its network that goes under the Caseta Wireless brand. Apple demoed its app running on the Apple Watch when it was announced last year. "All the technology in that watch was not available five years ago," Swatsky said. "Mobile devices make home controls more accessible."
Lutron has 15 partners in its Caseta Wireless ecosystem, including Logitech, and it is reaching out for more. This year, it will embrace ZigBee in a remote control for smart LED lights.
Today's up-and-coming networks, Bluetooth, WiFi and ZigBee, weren't ready to plug into the smart home when Lutron started work on its wireless technology nearly 20 years ago. But today the private company that sells to both consumer and contractors, which need to embrace the rising tide of open standards to continue to thrive.
Swatsky does not pretend that his FM band network made with off-the-shelf radios and MCUs is at the bleeding edge. Its 62.5Kb/s links are meant to extend only 30 feet in a typical home. The key is that they are reliable and support nodes with battery life measured in years.

Security cameras outside Vice President Joe Biden's Delaware home did not record a gunman who opened fire near the house Saturday night, a Secret Service official confirmed to NBC News on Tuesday.
The details were first reported by The Washington Post on Tuesday. The Secret Service has said that a vehicle drove by Biden's home the vice president and his wife, Jill, were not home at the time and that several shots were heard before the vehicle left "at a high rate of speed." The paper reported that the security system at the home had been so problematic in the past, at times generating false alarms, that the Secret Service turned it off for months last year.
Secret Service spokesman Brain Leary declined to discuss details of the security system or Saturday's incident. "As a practice the Secret Service does not discuss the condition, number or locations of cameras and alarms at facilities we protect since this is the type of information our adversaries desire," Leary said in a statement to NBC News. "On the night of the incident in Delaware, the appropriate security measures were in place and fully functioning."
The shots were heard shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, the Secret Service has said. It is unclear whether the house was struck by gunfire. U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, on Tuesday sent a letter to Joseph Clancy, acting director of the Secret Service, asking for more information. The letter refers to a 2011 incident in which shots were fired at the White House. The Secret Service came under criticism for its handling of that incident, which went unnoticed for four days until the damage was discovered.

Authorities investigating a shooting incident near the Delaware home of Vice President Joe Biden over the weekend say they have no leads or suspects because the property's surveillance cameras don't overlook the road where the shooting took place, according to a published report.
The Washington Post reported late Tuesday that the cameras are aimed at areas are adjacent to the home, but don't cover the area where Secret Service agents and neighbors heard a car speed away after four to six shots were fired Saturday night. Biden and his wife were not home at the time.
The Post also reports that the Biden home's security system has a long track record of unreliability, including several false alarms. At one point, according to the paper, the Secret Service turned the system off for several months last year.
In the wake of Saturday's incident, the Post reports that the Secret Service is proposing adding new cameras that would overlook more far-reaching areas of the property, including the main road. Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan did not elaborate on the Vice President's security arrangements, but told the Post, "On the night of the incident in Delaware, the appropriate security measures were in place and fully functioning."
The Secret Service has come under scrutiny in recent weeks for a series of security breaches at the White House, most notably a botched response to a 2011 shooting during which a bullet hit the Executive Mansion while President Obama and his wife were away.
Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, the chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, told the Post Tuesday that he had sent a letter to Secret Service Acting Director Joe Clancy asking to view the footage from the security cameras.
"It took so long to get details of the 2011 shooting, Chaffetz told the paper. "Let's learn from that and learn immediately what happened here."

Chatham Competition Alley Renovation -
January 21, 2015 by
Mr HomeBuilder
Chatham, Va.- Between two brick buildings along Main Street in Chatham, sits Competition Alley.
"Just a depressing little alley way between two tall buildings."
That's what most of the community considers it now. But Competition Alley isn't just any old alley way. This is the last original alley from the 1800s town of Competition. The plan is to transform it from this eye-sore, to a place where the town of Chatham can gather and just have fun.
For people to use for Farmer's Markets, vending, birthday parties, class outings, 5 o'clock music on Friday afternoons," said Mary Lee Black.
The possibilities are endless, according to Black. She is one of the co-chairs for the group Chatham First. They worked tirelessly for the final six weeks of 2014, and raised $50,000 for the project. An anonymous donor matched their$50,000, for a total of $100,000 to spruce up this old alleyway.
Joe Rogers is the other co-chair of Chatham First. He showed us some drawings of what he what he wants the alley way to look like.
"There will be a plaza, Rogers said. It will be a public venue. If people would like to take their lunches out there when the weather is nice, have lunch."
The goal is to have this alley way complete by mid-summer. The new competition alley will also have murals painted to represent the history of Competition and Chatham. They also plan to put in some Gazebos.
