Security on edge after drive-by shooting outside Bidens home - January 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

WILMINGTON, Del. Law enforcement officials have boosted security at the Delaware home of Vice President Joe Biden after several gunshots rang out from a vehicle speeding by the property over the weekend.

The vice president and his wife were not at their Wilmington home Saturday night when the shots were fired and there were no reports of injuries, authorities said Sunday.

Bidens office said the vice president and his wife, Jill Biden, were briefed Saturday night, as was President Barack Obama. Bidens office referred all other questions to the Secret Service. The vice president was set to speak Monday morning in Wilmington at a Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast organized by a minority womens group.

Secret Service spokesman Robert Hoback said the shots were fired at about 8:25 p.m. Saturday on a public road outside the homes secure perimeter. Bidens home is several hundred yards from the road. Secret Service personnel stationed at the top of the long, winding driveway leading to Bidens home heard the shots, saw the vehicle drive past the home at a high rate of speed and flee the scene.

Young Cho, who lives two houses up from the Bidens, told The Associated Press by telephone that he heard several gunshots Saturday evening.

We heard the shots, four of them, Cho said. But next door there is always Secret Service so I wasnt too worried. I feel really safe here. But it was really strange, to hear those kinds of shots next to the vice presidents house.

Bidens home is nestled in a heavily wooded neighborhood of stately stone-and-brick homes along a curving two-lane road that winds through rolling hills. Bidens home is not visible from the road, but a gatehouse cottage, occupied by the Secret Service, sits just yards from the main road, in front of a driveway blocked off by security vehicles.

Authorities searched outside the Biden residence and nearby homes to determine whether any rounds hit anything. Police said they also received a report of shots fired in the area of nearby Hoopes Reservoir, a source of fresh water for Wilmington.

On Sunday afternoon, half a dozen sport utility vehicles were parked near the entrance of the Bidens property, providing a heavy security presence.

Wireless security system saves homeowners money - January 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

More and more, people are installing home security systems on their own. For some homeowners it comes down to simple economics.

I dont like being held down to a contract, so the fact that I didnt have to pay somebody monthly meant that I could keep that money in my pocket, explains Damon Whitlow.

Whitlow has been monitoring his home security for a decade.

Two years ago he installed an iSmartAlarm. iSmartAlarm is a wireless home security system that allows him to keep an eye on his home from his phone. For just over $300, Whitlow installed a camera, two door sensors, and a motion detector.

To have a technician come out would cost about $500. For us, it took me 10 minutes and cost me nothing, said Whitlow.

By downloading the iSmartAlarm app to his phone he is able to control the entire system no matter where he is.

The camera is 360 degrees, so it does give me the ability to see anywhere in the room to monitor, Whitlow said while rotating the camera by swiping the screen on his phone.

When the system is armed and a door is opened or the motion sensor is set off, iSmartAlarm sends an alert text message to the Whitlows phone immediately followed by an automated call. Then its up to him to call 911.

Whitlow thinks thats the best feature the system offers.

The fact that if there is an emergency of a situation where I want to hit 'panic', I can just hit the button and it prompts me to call 911 and connects me directly to them," he said.

Police investigate gunshots outside VP Biden's Delaware home - January 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) Vice President Joe Biden said Monday that communities around the country need to work to bridge the separation between police and the residents they serve.

Speaking at a breakfast honoring slain civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., Biden said minority communities and police departments need to build relationships of trust.

Homes: Christmas light options for your house - January 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Avoid Clark Griswold missteps with a design plan.

Its that time of year again when we patiently wait for a break in the rain so we can scamper out and put up our Christmas lights before the wet stuff returns.

And with the seemingly wider array of Christmas lighting and decoration options every year, its no wonder Christmas light installation services are flourishing on the Internet.

For the uninitiated, or those needing assistance, there is Christmas-light installation help from high-end, design-and-build services, to companies that will put your lights up, to a guy on Craigslist who will put your own lights up for a fee.

But for old-fashioned Christmas enthusiasts, putting up the lights can sometimes be as much a part of the holidays, and as rewarding, as appreciating the finished product when its all done.

Chevy Chase and National Lampoon picked up on this holiday phenomenon and ran with it in 1989s Christmas Vacation. Theres a little bit of Clark Griswold, and his Christmas-light obsession, in all Christmas light enthusiasts.

So to avoid some of Clark Griswolds missteps, experts in this field suggest that during these rainy November days we prepare and plan for the next non-rainy weekend.

Before starting, its suggested weekend installers step back and develop an overall game plan instead of just winging it. This could actually help reduce how wet you get if you find theres no appropriately timed weather window and you have to put up Christmas lights in the rain.

Pick a focal point, such as the frame of your entryway, as the place youll want to start. Consider surfaces, gutter thickness and shingle flexibility to best determine how to hang lights along the roofline.
