SINGAPORE: The restaurant where a rat carcass was found in a buffet dish has been ordered by the National Environment Agency (NEA) to carry out intensive pest control treatment".
Another two rats have been caught at Hotpot Culture, a restaurant located at Marina Square, since it was ordered to suspend operations by the NEA after a diner filed a complaint.
During NEA's investigations, it found somedried rat droppings on the floor of the restaurant's storeroom and in the kitchen's false ceiling. A gap was found in the wall of the storeroom near the ceiling, and another one in the false ceiling. These could be possible points through which rats can gain access into the kitchen, NEA said.
Besides carrying out pest control treatment, NEA has also ordered Hotpot Culture to seal up potential entry points for rats, and ensure that proper housekeeping, food storage and waste management practices are followed.
The agency also said it will continue to monitor the pest control treatment and hygiene practices at the restaurant.
Enforcement action will also be taken against the restaurant, NEA said.Under the Environment Public Health (Food Hygiene) Regulations, licensees who sell food which is unclean can be fined up to S$2,000 and issued six demerit points.
"Operators of food establishments have a duty toensure their premises are clean and free from pests byputting in place a good cleaning regime and an effective pest control programme," NEA said, adding that it takes lapses seriously and will not hesitate to take errant operators to task.
Members of the public are advised to report such incidents by calling NEAs 24-hour Contact Centre at 1800-CALL-NEA (1800-2255-632).

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -
There are new complaints about bed bugs at the Regal Cinemas Oakwood 18 movie theater. In October, a more than a dozen moviegoers contacted Local 10 to claiming they were bitten by bed bugs while watching a movie at the theater.
At the time, spokesman for Regal Cinemas told Local 10 they were aware of the complaints, and that a pest control company had been hired and periodic inspections would be conducted to ensure they safety of guests.
The latest complaint comes from a woman who wanted to be anonymous but included a picture of what appear to be bed-bug bites on her back.
She said it happened last Saturday in theater No. 17. That's one of the same theaters in which several other moviegoers told Local 10 they too were eaten alive.
"Not only was it the back of my legs, it was the side of legs. It was both legs, and then it started coming all the way down to my arms," Sheylana Santanilla told Local 10's Roger Lohse in October.

Lohse attempted to speak with an on-site theater manager about the new complaints, but was told to contact the corporate office in Tennessee and then he was kindly asked to leave the property.
Lohse reported that he did see a pest control worker leaving the theater when he arrived there Wednesday morning. And despite the reports he did in October, he said he recently took his family to the theater to see a movie, and that none of them were bitten.
Local 10's calls to Regal Cinemas corporate office were not returned.

What a difference 40 years makes.
As a child in the 70s, Ken Nelson of the Breckenridge Restaurant Association remembers when smokers could light up just about anywhere: nightclubs, high-end restaurants, aprs patios, the dive bar down the street. Swirling smoke was considered yet another piece of the dining experience.
These days, decades of research on second-hand smoke have changed the restaurant industry. Smoking isnt allowed anywhere at Nelsons three Main Street establishments, including the outdoor patios he considers extensions of the dining rooms. For him, its a courtesy to all patrons, and smokers are often more than willing to oblige.
I think smokers have always been good about accommodating others, Nelson said. Theyre tuned into watching where these (smoking) areas are, and I think people understand where they can go and where they cant. Even smokers arent accustomed to having smoke in their face when they eat.
But habits are shifting once again. On Wednesday, the Breckenridge Town Council heard a series of revisions to the towns current smoking ordinance. The proposed changes arent 40 years in the making indoor smoking has been banned across the town and state since 2006 but they highlight a relatively new slice of tobacco (and marijuana) culture: electronic smoking devices.
As defined by the revised ordinance, electronic smoking devices run the gamut from electronic cigarettes to oil-based vaporizer pens. The revisions also ban smoking electronic and otherwise at all indoor and outdoor public areas owned by the town, including Blue River Plaza, the riverside bike path and golf club facilities, excluding the course of play itself. The ban is paired with a 10-foot buffer zone restriction for business entryways, restaurant patios and public transit stations.
The town council unanimously approved the revised ordinance on its first reading Wednesday night, and no business owners or town residents opposed the changes. The ordinance will take effect if passed during the second reading at the next regular meeting on Jan. 27.
Silverthorne and Dillon have considered similar restrictions the Dillon council will discuss smoking at the Jan. 20 work session but neither town has written drafts ordinances.
Before approving the Breckenridge revisions, Mayor John Warner wondered aloud about the impact they will have on casual, everyday smokers.
This is something new and perhaps will be important for some people, Warner said at the meeting. When he asked how long other Colorado towns have banned electronic devices and smoking in entryways, Breckenridge chief of police Shannon Haynes noted that Denver and Boulder passed similar smoking laws several years ago, and Brecks proposed changes are in line with most of the state.
