The hot, dry weather has led to a cockroach boom in Marlborough.
Cockroaches are bedding down in Marlborough letter boxes as part of a summer pest boom across the region.
McAs Pest and Weed Control and Carpet Cleaning owner Andy McAslan said hot, dry temperatures had resulted in an influx in flies, cockroaches and ants in Marlborough.
He had fielded several requests from people wanting their letter boxes to be treated to prevent cockroaches and other insects taking up residence.
Cockroaches were drawn to junk mail and other paper because it was similar to wood, McAslan said.
"It's a nice wee house for the cockroaches in the mail box and they just crawl in between the pages."
The breeding cycles of flies, cockroaches and ants became quicker in the warmer weather, McAslan said.
"Cockroaches breed incredibly quickly at this time of year with the hot temperatures so there's quite a few small cockroaches around."
Blenheim resident Geoffrey Pybus said he had spotted cockroaches the size of a $2 coin among the junk mail at his house.
He thought perhaps the cockroaches were among the junk mail while it was being delivered.

CASSOPOLIS, Mich. --- With plummeting temperatures around Michiana, energy costs are on the rise. While theres no end to the cold in sight, it is possible to help ease the pain of the electric bill every month.
I think one of the biggest misconceptions is the difference between air sealing and insulation, Roger Bowser, Midwest Energy Cooperatives Manager of Energy Programs and Services said. People get them confused all the time. They're two separate things. In order for insulation to be effective you have to air seal first and then insulate properly.
Having a home that is well sealed is a great step into saving money on your bills. Bowser held a meeting at the Lowe Center in Cassopolis to help residents find ways to save money. The biggest tip was to get a home energy audit. These are when professional energy auditors come into your home to find out where a homes biggest problem areas are as far as energy efficiency goes. This could be attics with leaky areas around chimneys or duct work, crawlspaces and basements with thermal boundary issues or dirt floors, or even fireplaces which allow drafty air inside the home. An energy auditor can come and tell you where the problem areas are with a blower door energy audit. However, the audit wont fix anything but will give you the knowledge you need to make your home more efficient.
It's really important, if they're going to spend the money to do an energy audit, and if you have money to make an upgrade, then do it, Bowser said. Don't just do the audit. The audit is not going to save you anything. Other than give you more knowledge.
There are some simple steps to making your home more efficient. You can install a programmable thermostat that can turn your heat down as much as 10 degrees during the work day or at night. This can cut your annual heating bill by as much as 10 percent according to the U.S. Energy Department Estimates.
Another useful tip is cleaning or replacing furnace filters. Bowser says if you have forced air heating, cleaning or replacing your furnaces air filter each month during the heating season will save energy and money.
One tip that may infringe on your comfort level, but will decrease costs, is turning down your water heater.
Many homes water heaters are set way above the recommended 120 degree temperature, Bowser said. Unfortunately, every 2.5 degrees above the mark unnecessarily boosts your hot water bill by about one percent and increases the risk of scalding, especially in homes with children.
With water temperature, another factor is frequency. How many showers are you taking per week and for how long? How many loads of laundry are you doing? These things can have major impacts on a monthly utility bill but can be lowered using some of these tips.
There are a lot of decisions we make that we can conserve on if our behavior is such that we want to change it, Bowser said. They need to understand what their energy costs are and how their behavior affects that. If thats something they want to have as part of their lifestyle, then they should understand how much more that costs them to do that. If theyre willing to accept that, thats fine. This is a free country.

For almost eight years, the Green family has repeatedly asked the city how their neighbours towering 6-metre garage could be legal and have been told nothing can be done about it.
But with a new mayor in office, Dianne Green, a 77-year-old widow, decided to give it another try.
In the last few years, I have survived losing my husband of 55 years, cancer, the [Sunrise] propane explosion, dealing (with) our home insurance company and being bullied, but now I am alone and it is just too much, she wrote in spidery longhand. No one can deny this wall is horrible to look at and I have to see it every day. It is very, very offensive I am in great need of your help. I would be very thankful and grateful if the by law is enforced and the wall is covered up properly.
The letter may have struck a chord over at city hall because the Greens received a quick response, though it was not the one they were hoping for. Like every previous exchange, the city told them the garage doesnt break any bylaws.
Michael Green, a Polish Holocaust survivor, moved to Canada after the war and married Dianne in 1959. They moved into their house that same year and raised two kids in the Downsview area of North York without any disputes for decades.
All that came to an end in 2008, when Jose Santos bought the house that backed onto theirs, knocked it down and built a bigger one in its place. He also raised the level of his back yard by a metre and built a large garage on top.
The reason the garage appears so large is because its sitting on a back yard thats been raised three feet, and it wasnt like that before he bought it, said their son, Jeff Green.
While the city ordered Santos to reduce the height of his garage by a few feet, inspectors determined that no other bylaws had been broken.
Believe it or not, what you see is the lower height, Jeff Green said.
Reached at his home Wednesday evening, Santos declined to comment. He had previously told the Star: Whatever I do with my garage is my business, not yours. Its nobodys business.

The city of Portage will once again invest in Silver Lake Beach.
The Parks and Recreation Board voted 4-1 on Tuesday to proceed with the replacement of a retaining wall at the location this spring.
The more than 200-foot-long wall will be replaced instead of repaired. The full replacement is expected to cost around $100,000.
Board members said they want the wall to be aesthetically pleasing and noted that it could look something like the retaining wall at the Market Square parking lot downtown.
Well be dead the next time they replace this wall, said Board Chairman Brian Zirbes, stating the groups rationale for going beyond a simple repair.
Zirbes, however, was the lone no vote Tuesday. Zirbes is not against the project, but had hoped it would go farther and potentially expand facilities with a deck of some type.
Manager of Parks and Recreation Dan Kremer, however, said the project budget did not allow the group to expand the scope. The plan presented was what the engineer thought was the best option for function and longevity within the proposed budget, he said.
Funding for the project was approved as part of the 2015 city budget.
The city will now seek construction bids for the project.
Board member Todd Kreckman, an assistant varsity soccer coach in Portage, called on city officials to get tougher in protecting the varsity soccer field in Veterans Memorial Field.
