Penang never approved land clearing in Bukit Laksamana - January 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- The DAP-led Penang government had never issued approvals for landowners to carry out land clearing activities in Bukit Laksamana, Balik Pulau here.

The state's Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said that to the contrary, notices to stop such works had been issued to the landowners since Oct 2014.

"We are in the process of taking legal action against landowners for clearing land without permission," he told reporters after the swearing-in ceremony of new members of the Penang Municipal Council, here today.

On Tuesday, it was reported that land clearing activities on hills in the state was still going on with the latest incident detected in Bukit Laksamana and Bukit Batu Itam in Balik Pulau.

Chow said the approval for land clearing activities and approval for the plan in Bukit Batu Itam was issued in 2007.

2014 Community Leaders of the Year: Designer show house organizers - January 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

It was, perhaps, an unconventional idea: recruit interior designers to transform the rooms of an 1835 Cutchogue farmhouse and then donate proceeds from tours of the home to local charities.

But parting with convention has paid off literally.

When all was said and done, organizers said, the 2014 North Fork Designer Show House attracted close to 1,500 visitors and raised more than $40,000 for nonprofits Community Action Southold Town, Maureens Haven, Timothy Hill Childrens Ranch and Katinka House. A follow-up version of the event, Christmas at the Show House and Best of North Fork Emporium, raised an additional $30,000 and benefited the Wounded Warrior Project, local families in need and Mondays at Racine, an Islip-based charity that provides spa services for female cancer patients. Local vendors also sold goods at the second show house.

You can help a good cause and enjoy yourself at the same time, interior designer Conni Cross said in November. Its like a grown-up version of playing house.

For their demonstrated commitment to local charities in Southold and Riverhead towns, the organizers of the North Fork Designer Show House Bob Tapp, Kate DiGregorio, Melissa Buckley, Nick Ellis, Christina Kosmynka and Barbara McAdam are The Suffolk Times 2014 Community Leaders of the Year.

It was thrilling to see the enthusiasm and continued support of a beautiful event all in the name of charity, Mr. Tapp said. Both events made people happy.

Sponsored by The Corcoran Group, the idea for the original show house took shape in February, when organizers were brainstorming ways to assist local charities.

Weve done charity events in the past, and I had a done a 5K for CAST, so we were just trying to come up with a new idea, Ms. DiGregorio explained last year. So Bob said, What about a designer show house?

Luckily, the ideal property was available: an airy 12-room house next to the Village Green in Cutchogue, owned by Cutchogue Presbyterian Church. It had become vacant in December 2013 when the churchs former minister moved out, Mr. Tapp said. Church officials offered the use of the property and local designers were quickly recruited to revamp a room of their choice, with some decorators working in pairs or small groups.

Xsilon Launches Early Access Partnership Program for Its New Hanadu Silicon Roadmap - January 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Xsilon Launches Early Access Partnership Program for Its New Hanadu Silicon Roadmap

Hanadu is the new Machine-to-Machine (M2M) connectivity solution developed by Xsilon to bring the Internet of Things (IOT) to low cost domestic appliances and devices located anywhere inside every type of home. Hanadu extends the widely-used IEEE 802.15.4 networking standard into the powerline domain, allowing it to use the homes existing electrical wiring in addition to deadspot-prone radio solutions in the home.

Hanadu connects the Internet of Things to those parts of the home where radio struggles to reach, for the same price point as a normal 15.4-compliant radio solution. It consumes a tenth of the power of other powerline technologies, with far superior reach for IOT traffic. Small enough to fit inside a standard electrical plug, Hanadu allows existing appliances to be retro-fitted to the network. When embedded within new product designs, the integrated capabilities are huge. In development by Xsilon since 2008, Hanadu uses 4G mobile techniques to empower its low cost, high performance solutions. Hanadu extends all the leading IOT connectivity technologies ZigBee, 6LoWPAN, IPv6 and Thread to the entirety of the home.

Hanadu is supported by the Hanadu Special Interest Group (SIG), which is now open for new memberships. Hanadu-compliant products will be available commercially from a variety of silicon vendors in H1 2016. Xsilons own Hanadu modem devices, the HAN250EP and HAN250LB, will begin sampling in Q4 2015.

The low-cost HAN250EP device connects Hanadu endpoints into a Hanadu cloud within the home using low-cost peripheral interfaces to the appliances internal hardware. Host interfaces include SPI, UART, I2C and PWM. The HAN250LB device has a richer selection of networking interfaces, allowing the Hanadu cloud to link to local LANs and gateways via WiFi, Ethernet and USB. Both devices come in variants that integrate energy consumption measurement for Home Energy Management solutions. These modems will also be available as modules, providing OEMs with pre-certified turnkey Hanadu capability.

Xsilon today launches its Early Access Partnership program for OEMs who are looking to engage with Hanadu technology during 2015, and to be in the first wave of Hanadu-based products in 2016. The benefits to Early Access Partners include: (1) Earliest access to Xsilons HAN250EP and HAN250LB single-chip Hanadu modems in Q4 2015 (2) Engagement with Xsilons Hanadu hardware evaluation platforms (3) Beta access to 6LoWPAN, Thread and ZigBee implementations on Hanadu (4) Inclusion in the evolution of the Hanadu specification via the Hanadu SIG (5) Engagement with the Hanadu interoperability certification process, commencing H2 2015

The Hanadu SIG will announce its first wave of members during the course of Q1 2015. The first EAP program members are already engaged with Hanadu products. Today marks the opening of the EAP to additional program members and of the Hanadu SIG to further memberships.

Russell Haggar, Xsilons chief executive, said: Hanadu has been extensively tested and evaluated during 2014, and 2015 is going to be a massively exciting year for the SIG and for Xsilon as a company. CES is the ideal time to announce our silicon roadmap and to launch our Early Access Partnership. We want to build on the partnerships that weve already established and expand the range of OEMs engaging with Hanadu technology ahead of product launches at next years CES.

Hanadu is ideal for homes where a radio-only approach cannot connect to every device and appliance. This is actually what consumers experience in pretty much every home all over the world. We all know parts of our homes where our WiFi drops out, and its far from sensible to move household appliances just to get coverage. Hanadu ensures that the Internet of Things can come to the appliance, no matter where it is located.

A lot of work has been put into Hanadu to allow it to support both ZigBee and Thread networking models. Each home is different: where radio is good to connect a device in one home, powerline is better in another home. The mix-and-match combination of radio and powerline that Hanadu enables will allow the Internet of Things to come to every electrically-powered device that exists within the home.

Technicians Expect More Work When Temperatures Plummet - January 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    TULSA, Oklahoma -

With our low temperature hovering in the single digits, area plumbing and heating repair workers are overrun with calls.

Companies say cold days remind people to get things checked out - pipes or furnace filters - but sometimes people wake up shivering with no heat or head to the sink to find things aren't flowing as usual.

When it gets this cold, the work heats up for crews who fix broken pipes and sluggish furnaces; it's something they expect every year when the temperatures plummet.

The phones were busy, obviously with a lot of frozen pipes," said Mullin Plumbing CEO, Robert Morris.

Roughly 25 percent of the calls Mullin Plumbing is getting right now are for frozen pipes.

They said when colder weather is in the forecast, they start getting ready.

We try to make preparations the night before and make sure we've got all our equipment ready, and make sure all of our trucks are ready to go, and get the guys here and get them started early because we know it's going to be a long day," Morris said.

It's long day for Heating and Cooling companies too.

Long-time technician Dil Brandow was booked up, changing filters and fixing problems.

Home repair at the touch of a button - January 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

From left: Michael Kline and Zorik Gordon. Photos courtesy of Serviz

Hiring a handyman can be a headache-inducing experience. Sometimes the job ends up costing more than the original estimate, or the five-star Yelp reviews turn out to be pure fiction. There is little protection for customers who simply want their homes to function properly.

Zorik Gordon and Michael Kline, two veterans of the tech industry, recognized these issues and set out to change the way people approach home repairs and services. This past July, they launched Serviz (serviz.com), a website and iPhone app (an Android version is planned to launch sometime this year) that allows users to find repairmen, plumbers, cleaners, electricians and other home specialists on demand. Users can book a background-checked professional for same-day service and see exactly what it will cost beforehand.

The whole process of booking and buying a home service is really broken, Gordon said. We created a new solution.

All of the Serviz professionals are required to have a clean criminal record, insurance, a license (if necessary) and good reviews from customers in order to stay listed. They all are given tablet devices so customers can track their arrival time and pay the bill electronically.

Its free to book an appointment. Listed prices vary per service, but customers may also book a repairman for a service not listed, for $45 to $60 per hour, depending on the project. The company marks up parts and labor 20 percent.

We think the rates in the current market are just too high, Kline said. A lot of market research went into our pricing. Were willing to survive on lower margins because, for us, its about building lifetime customer relationships.

Currently, Serviz, which is headquartered in Sherman Oaks, is available throughout all of Los Angeles and Orange counties, but Gordon said he plans eventually to take it global.

Gordon said that Serviz has more going for it than price: It also helps alleviate safety concerns because people dont always know who theyre hiring to come into their home when they call up a business.

We were considering hiring one potential merchant until 17 negative things had come up on his background check. This is somebody out there who is advertising his services, and he gets to go into peoples houses. That alone is a huge fundamental difference between [us and the existing system], Gordon said. Having an intermediary company is a buffer between yourself and the merchant.
