You can organize most of today's home security offerings into two groups -- do-it-yourself kits like Scout and Viper Home and contract-based professional services like ADT Pulse and AT&T's Digital Life.

There are a handful of hybrid systems, though (SimpliSafe and Oplink, for instance), that merge easy install DIY-ness with advanced security features such as professional monitoring. But, many either lack open protocols for third-party integration or their "optional" monthly fees are required for viewing saved video clips and enjoying other security and automation basics.

Abode is a new hybrid system -- introduced today via Kickstarter by a former ADT employee -- that's trying to enhance this growing home security category with a suite of products, promised partnerships with IFTTT as well as smart thermostat, LED and lock manufacturers and highly flexible professional monitoring fees.

The Abode kit includes a gateway, or hub, complete with RF, Z-Wave and ZigBee platforms, a 95-decibel speaker, battery backup and 3G backup. According to the Abode team, the hub was designed with future software upgrades in mind so it should be fairly easy to access any add-on features.

It also comes with two cameras. The wide-angle "motion" camera is supposed to use infrared tech to take a bunch of RGB photos whenever it detects activity; it relies on three AA batteries and is expected to last for as long as five years.

The "streaming" camera, on the other hand, is designed to capture video clips of security events that you can save on Abode's cloud server (there's no local storage option) and review on-demand on the Android or iOS mobile apps or on the Web app.

You'll also get two lithium-ion-powered door/window sensors for targeted motion detection in particularly vulnerable spots throughout your home. These sensors operate on an RF frequency, and Abode claims that each battery will last for more than a decade. If true, that's pretty impressive.

And, while you're supposed to be able to arm and disarm the Abode system based on the location of your phone, you should be able to use the included key fob for manual arming/disarming.

Parker & Sons Reports Record Demand As Of January 2015 For Video Inspections On Commercial Plumbing

If you thought the Obamacare rollout was fun, just wait until your furnace dies.

Californias new energy efficiency regulations, which started being enforced last summer, dramatically boost costs for owners of older homes when they need major maintenance on their systems for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Thats because ducts must be R-8 insulated and certified to be free of leaks, a standard that can force total replacement for many houses built before 2008.

Consider my instructive tale. In 2011, I paid $8,100 for a new, super-efficient heating and cooling system, complete with new ductwork, in a house we renovated in Valley Center.

But this month, a nearly identical HVAC system cost $12,758 to buy and install. Thats because the job required more labor, permits and testing in my vintage 1969 home in South Oceanside.

Both systems had identical efficiency ratings. So the new regulations added 57 percent to my costs a whopping $4,658 that wont go for investing, spending with local merchants or funding other efficiency improvements.

And remember, this extra cash didnt buy the planet a molecule of carbon reduction.

Now, to be fair, Obamacare is more expensive, because its regulations can raise consumer costs forever with little evidence of improving health, versus my one-time HVAC lump.

For example, my best friends health insurance premiums tripled in 2014 after the federal government outlawed her previous basic coverage. In this context, I got off easy with a 57 percent hit, courtesy of the California Energy Commission.

Of course, not everybody saw their health premiums triple, in part because many qualified for cash subsidies (have fun with those tax returns).

A FORMER police officer has joined a national network of ex-bobbies offering handyman services.

Dave Hogg, who was in the police for 32 years and served in Darlington, Durham, Peterlee, Consett and Chester-le-Street, on traffic patrols and with the North-East Alcohol Office, has signed up with Trust in Blue, offering handyman services around Durham City.

The 54-year-old, who retired from Durham Police as a Temporary Superintendent in 2010, said: I was a police officer in Durham Constabulary for 32 years and there was rarely a day when I didnt either deal with or hear about members of the local community being ripped off by rogue tradesmen.

Working with Blue gives me the opportunity to redress the balance and provide local people with a service they know they can trust.

As a police officer, Mr Hogg, who lives in Newton Hall, was involved in controversial schemes to ban under-16s from the streets of Seaham after 9pm and ban under-21s from buying drinks at off-licences.
