Singaporeans can now take in gorgeous views of foliage and clear flowing waters along two rivers in Pasir Ris and Tampines.
A 900m stretch of Sungei Api Api between the Tampines Expressway and Pasir Ris Drive 3 has been turned into a vibrant green corridor - with more plants along the water edge and canal walls, wider footpaths, shelters, lookout decks and seats.
At a 1.1km stretch along Sungei Tampines, also between the expressway and Pasir Ris Drive 3, new decks and a community plaza will bring people closer to the river.
National water agency PUB yesterday opened its two latest Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) projects. Since 2006, the rejuvenation scheme has helped turn Singapore's drains, canals and reservoirs into beautiful areas that are well integrated with their surrounding parks and spaces.
As of last month, 27 projects had been completed under the programme.
Six more are slated to start this year, including one at Bukit Batok Canal, which began in January.
In the projects that were opened yesterday, rain gardens and a cleansing biotope - a collection of plants and materials such as soil and rocks - were created along the waterways to show how plants and soil can be used to treat rainwater.
The rain gardens feature plants such as Leucophyllum Frutescens (Texas ranger) and Loropetalum Chinense Var Rubrum (Chinese fringe-flower), three layers of soil and a pipe system to filter rainwater and channel it into the river.
The cleansing biotope uses highly porous materials such as lava stone and hardy plants to remove sediment and some nutrients naturally from the rainwater.
Two mangrove sculptures were erected at the entrance to Pasir Ris Drive 1 to represent the mangrove trees along Sungei Api Api.

New riverfronts unveiled in Pasir Ris and Tampines
The government has cleared the decks for private investment in urban development. The Partner Kerala Mission is set to ink an agreement with urban local bodies and development authorities here on Monday to formalise Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects.
The Partner Kerala Mission will also sign a separate agreement with Kitco, the transaction adviser.
RFQ cleared
The government has already cleared the two pacts and the Request for Quotation (RFQ).
The signing of the agreements will kick-start the PPP projects formulated by the Urban Affairs Department, an official pressnote issued here said.
As many as 28 municipalities and corporations and the Kollam, Kozhikode and Greater Kochi development authorities have submitted a total of 41 PPP projects for Rs.2,000 crore to be implemented under the pact with the Partner Kerala Mission.
These include construction of bus terminals, abattoirs, shopping complexes, flyovers, diagnostic centres, and waste treatment plants. The Rs.450-crore project to develop Sakthan Nagar at Thrissur is the project with the largest outlay. Several private firms have come forward to invest in urban development projects. The project works are expected to begin in two months, the pressnote said.
The signing of the agreements will take place at Mascot Hotel here at 10 a.m. in the presence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Minister for Urban Affairs Manjalamkuzhy Ali will preside over the function.

A sight for sore eyes this spring: more homes for homebuyers.
After two years of wading through picked-over listings, South Florida buyers are celebrating a new batch of well-maintained homes for sale.
Palm Beach County had 27,714 new listings last year, up 16 percent from 2013, according to the Realtors Association of the Palm Beaches. Broward County had 27,940 new listings, up 14 percent from 2013, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Realtors said. Listings also were up in both counties during January.
Real estate agents and analysts say more homeowners are testing the market because higher home values have restored the equity they lost during the housing bust. The changing landscape is giving a boost to the traditional spring selling season.
"It's very refreshing, to tell you the truth," said Judy Trudel, an agent in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
Jason Tornatore is working with Trudel to find a three- or four-bedroom home in Coconut Creek, Lighthouse Point or Fort Lauderdale. He said he had no trouble finding properties in his $350,000 price range.
"Every time we turn around, we're getting inundated with new listings," said Tornatore, 37, an insurance claims adjuster who recently signed a contract on a Fort Lauderdale house. "Just within the last two weeks, stuff is flying onto the market. Getting what you want is a lot easier these days."
Karen Lilly, a renter in Parkland, started looking in January for properties to buy. Within a few weeks, she found a four-bedroom home in Heron Bay. Built in 2013, it's move-in ready, with marble floors and impact-resistant windows. Lilly expects to close the deal April 15.
"I didn't want to rent forever," she said. "I looked at a bunch of different homes, and it was pretty quick."
When prices bottomed in late 2011, investors flooded the market looking for the best deals. That led to a slew of sales that eventually depleted the supply of homes. In late 2012 and 2013, buyers struggled to find quality listings, with many of the available homes vacant or in need of major repairs.
