Los Angeles is number one on yet another list, but is this one we should celebrate?

Terminix, a provider of termite and pest control services in the United States, released its annual ranking of the most termite-infested cities in the country. Cities in California and Texas dominated the list, earning six of the top 10 spots.

This announcement comes during the National Pest Management AssociationsTermite Awareness Week, March 15-21, during which the NPMA educates consumers on termite damage and pest prevention.

The 2015 list of most-infested cities include:

1.Los Angeles, Calif. 2.San Francisco, Calif. 3.Dallas-Forth Worth, Texas 4.San Diego, Calif. 5.Houston, Texas 6.Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 7.Phoenix, Ariz. 8.Atlanta, Ga. 9.Sacramento, Calif. 10. Oklahoma City, Okla. 11. Tampa-St. Petersburg, Fla. 12. Boston, Mass. 13. Washington, D.C. 14. Honolulu, Hawaii 15. Cincinnati, Ohio 16. Philadelphia, Penn. 17. Baton Rouge, La. 18. New York, N.Y. 19. Kansas City, Kan. 20. San Antonio, Texas

This list was created by compiling termite-specific inbound lead data from the more than 300 Terminix branches across the country. The rankings represent Metropolitan Statistical Areas with the highest volume of leads throughout 2014. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas-Forth Worth and Houston all moved up the list this year, previously holding spots two, eight, five and nine, respectively. San Diego, the previous leader, dropped three spots.

Termites thrive in warm, moist environments, making southern states like California, Texas and Florida the perfect environment for their destructive behavior, said Doug Webb, Terminix technical specialist and expert on wood-destroying insects. But living elsewhere doesnt mean youre safe. Termites are active in all 50 states except Alaska, and regularly cause thousands of dollars of uninsured damage across the country.

According to a recent study from Harris Interactive, the average damage caused by termite infestations is $8,184. Most of the time, this damage is not covered by homeowners insurance.

Vancouver restaurants and bars with patios can apply to keep their outdoor space open an extra hour to 1 a.m. this summer, but they will have to keep the noise down.

If there are any (noise) complaints, we have the right to revoke the permission at any time, said city of Vancouver spokesman Tobin Postma in an interview Friday.

In a news release, the city said that the additional hour builds on the success of last years patio pilot program that resulted in 115 businesses keeping their patios open one hour later than usual.

Last years Patio Hours Extension Program allowed bars and restaurants to keep their patios open the extra hour from 11 p.m. to midnight daily. This years program extends it an additional hour to 1 a.m.

Postma noted that the city did not receive any noise complaints during last summers pilot program.

As locals know, and visitors fast come to appreciate, Vancouver summers are amazing, said Mayor Gregor Robertson in a statement. Im pleased we can work together with our hospitality businesses to provide a fun, vibrant experience to patrons even later this year. This pilot will help us ensure we are creating lively streetscapes that contribute to our economy while considering impacts to surrounding neighbours.

The city said the longer patio hours will run from April 1 to Oct. 31, with both small and large patios eligible to apply.

Its estimated that 298 active large patios and 301 active small patios are eligible for the extension and businesses can apply online. Businesses are required to have up-to-date insurance, all fees paid in full and no patio noise-related complaints on file in the last 12 months.

The City of Vancouver wants people to enjoy an extra hour of patio time this summer.

Restaurants with patios can now apply to the city to keep their outdoor spaces open until 1 .a.m from April to October.

According to a release by the city, the additional hour builds on the success of last years patio pilot program, which resulted in 115 establishments keeping their patios open on hour later than usual.

The city started a patio hours extension pilot program in 2014 to improve the patio experience for customers and enliven Vancouvers streets.

There are 298 active large patios and 301 active small patios that are considered eligible for the extension. Interested businesses can apply online and are required to have up-to-date insurance, all fees paid in full and no patio noise complaints on file in the last year.

When a decorator is called in to help redecorate or update a room, the discussion usually starts with 'why' the time is right for this project. Reasons can vary from realizing that the furnishings are out of date to a major life change.

In the room pictured here, the client's husband had moved out, taking the family room furniture with him. The stress on her emotions as well as her budget was an influence on how to approach the project.

She wanted a room that would seat four to six people and feel cozy. She wasn't comfortable with bold colors and wanted it to look like it had a "decorator's touch." The decorator learned that she had a love for birds.

A sofa in a soft, taupe solid was placed on the main wall, with a chair in moss green to the left of it. In front of the window a smaller scale chair gives the client a place to watch the birds outside while completing a cozy conversation area inside.

Since this chair was small scale, the transitional, simple vine pattern didn't compete with a statement print. The ottoman that went with the moss green chair can be moved to accommodate any of the seats in the area, or it can serve as a cocktail table with a tray placed on it.

The original custom window treatments that were elegant 20 years ago looked tired and heavy. To freshen the window, draperies in a soft stripe are topped with a shaped cornice upholstered in the beautiful statement print, a large pattern of elegant birds. The same fabric was used as accent pillows. Years ago, the statement print would have been shown on the sofa, with solid accents.

By using good quality in your upholstery furniture in neutrals, pops of color and patterns in your accents, such as throw pillows and area rugs, can update a room economically.

Although her end tables were a bit out of date, they really aren't noticed with her new, large lamps. With entangled twig-like bases, the lamps appear to be a pair, but in reality are a perfect blend, with one having a round base and round shade and the other a square base and shade. They are also the perfect height to project enough light for reading.
