Design, Bitches' colorful aesthetic is all over the map - March 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Don't tell architects Rebecca Rudolph and Catherine Johnson that their spaces are minimalist. And don't even think about using the phrase "urban chic." The two Los Angeles women behind Design, Bitches, the firm that designed Superba Snack Bar and Superba Food + Bread in Venice, the Coolhaus brick-and-mortar ice cream stores, Oinkster on Vine and the Springs in downtown L.A., are beyond one-off descriptions, and they know it.

Superba Snack Bar (which won an American Institute of Architects 2013 restaurant design award) is dripping with Venice history and style, with raked stucco walls and swimming pool tiles on its patio. The Springs is a beachy haven in the middle of a concrete jungle; Oinkster shines as a modern-day burger joint; and the Coolhaus spaces epitomize food truck culture with a 1980s pop twist.

The Design, Bitches aesthetic is as diverse as Los Angeles. Unlike the designers behind the modern industrial look of Bestia (Studio Unltd and Osvaldo Maiozzi), the hippie-gone-glam vibe of Farmshop of Santa Monica and the Ace Hotel (Commune Design), and the bright, shabby chic of Gracias Madre and Cafe Gratitude in Venice (Wendy Haworth Design), Rudolph and Johnson create jigsaw puzzles with their spaces. They juxtapose the city's hyper development, weather patterns and attitudes into fluid, tactile spaces you can experience.

Rudolph and Johnson are redefining SoCal dining style and, in doing so, showing us what it truly is a mash-up of carefree beach vibe, cozy suburbia, taco stand culture and hipster cred, with a thoughtful nod to neighborhood traditions.

We sat down with Rudolph and Johnson to discuss what inspires their work and where they are taking their designs.

How did Design, Bitches get started?

Rudolph: We were working together at Silver Lake architect Barbara Bestor's office. The AIA L.A. chapter had a competition in January 2010, in the depths of the recession, [to give] younger architects [something] to do to get them motivated. The contest challenge was "Architecture is: fill in the blank." And the idea was to answer with a manifesto of what you think architecture is and a portfolio. So we thought, "For fun, we will enter a not-completely-made-up but semi-fictitious portfolio," really for our entertainment. We had no thought of actually winning. So our answer to the question was: "It's design, bitches." We made up this whole identity and made a manifesto, made up some projects and included some real ones we had worked on together. It was very tongue-in-cheek. Now we have a real office, real employees and real work.

(The two started accepting jobs as Design, Bitches in January 2012 and work mostly out of an office at Rudolph's house in Atwater Village.)

Johnson: We won an honorable mention, we got a plaque with our names on it, and it gave us this chance to re-tap into things that maybe we had been interested in and just hadn't thought about in a really long time.... We shared a mutual frustration with architects taking themselves incredibly seriously, and the recession kind of prodded us to think bigger.

What was the thinking behind Superba Snack Bar and Superba Food + Bread?

Stony Point home destroyed in Thursday morning fire - March 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

FRENCHTOWN TOWNSHIP Flames destroyed a Stony Point home and damaged two others early this morning.

The fire broke out around 5 a.m. in the 3700 block of Lakeshore Dr. When fire crews arrived, the home was fully engulfed, said Frenchtown Township Fire Chief Mark Nicholai.

Chief Nicholai said the gas meter was on fire, but firefighters are unsure if that sparked the blaze or if it was a result of the fire. The vacant home is believed to be a single-story ranch house, however, the chief said because of the extensive damage by the time fire personnel arrived, it was not determined.

The fire had a good start for sure, the chief said before crews arrived. This area is pretty isolated, so it was going good.

The wind caused the fire to spread to the attic of a second home to the north, which is a two-story house. The homeowner was at home and she was not injured.

There is significant damage to the second house, he said. The roof is a tin roof and all the support structures are damaged. The only thing left is the tin.

The siding on the third home was damaged and had melted off nearly all of one side. That home, the chief said, is livable. No one was home at the time of the fires.

'Substantial' cost increase for Landonline system replacement - March 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Land Information New Zealand

LAND GRAB: Property records have come a long way, albeit at a high price, since the first house in Invercargill was sketched by a surveyor in 1856.

Another costly government computer project, this time worth tens of millions of dollars, is in the wings.

Land Information New Zealand said the replacement of its Landonline computer system would cost substantially more than the $42 million estimate it provided to ministers in 2013.

Deputy chief executive Russell Turner would not say whether the bill for the new system, the Advanced Survey and Title Services system (ASaTS), might be more than the original cost of Landonline, which was completed in 2003 at a cost of $141m after a $46m blow-out.

Land Information said it was now time to start planning for a replacement of Landonline. A Cabinet paper in 2013 quoted the likely cost at $42m. At the time, it was envisaged ASaTS would reuse some parts of Landonline.

But Turner said that original estimate had been "very indicative". A tender had since revealed that because few other countries had developed similar systems, there were few "off the shelf" components available and "a high level of customisation" would be needed in any change, he said.

"As a result ... the true cost of the project and is likely to be substantially higher than the earlier indicative figures," he said.

Turner said ASaTS was expected to take a similar length of time as Landonline, about five years, to complete. "As we are still at a relatively early stage in the development of the [project] and preparing a detailed business case for Cabinet, we are not able to discuss the likely budget at this stage," he said.

A parliamentary select committee reported the business case was likely to be ready in "a couple of months".

LaHood, ex-congressman's son, to vie for Aaron Schock's seat - March 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

PEORIA, Ill. The son of former White House Cabinet member Ray LaHood emerged as the leading contender Wednesday to replace U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock, as two other potential candidates abandoned thoughts of seeking the seat that is coming open after a spending scandal forced the Illinois congressman's abrupt resignation.

State Sen. Darin LaHood, whose father held the central Illinois seat before Schock and then served as President Barack Obama's transportation secretary, announced that he would seek the seat Wednesday morning during an appearance on a radio show in Peoria, where his family has resided for decades.

"This is an opportunity that doesn't come around very often," LaHood said, saying he had received "a lot of encouragement" to make a bid for the post in the hours that followed Schock's announcement Tuesday.

LaHood said he plans to campaign on his record as a former state and federal prosecutor, and on his record as a fiscal conservative who advocated for ethics reform. He said he considers himself more conservative than his father.

"I've got a conservative voting record here, a strong record in the senate, so I'll stand on that," he said.

Two other GOP state senators Jason Barickman and Bill Brady were considering bids, but both said they had decided against running in a special election that Gov. Bruce Rauner will call after Schock leaves office March 31. It must be held within 120 days, meaning voters will select a replacement by the end of July.

Schock's departure, fast and hard even by Washington's standards, was still resonating Wednesday for the area's politicians and Schock's constituents.

Schock accepted rides on donors' private planes without properly reporting them, made improbably lucrative real estate deals with political supporters, and spent $40,000 in taxpayer money to decorate his office in the style of "Downton Abbey" money he paid back after the expenditures came under question.
