Mother Nature giveth and she taketh away for locals who have been enjoying Wagner Park over the last few months.
The downtown park was again fenced off on Tuesday to allow sod that was laid last fall time to better establish its root system now that the winter blanket of snow has melted.
Chris Forman, operations manager for the citys parks department, said hes optimistic that the closure wont last more than a few weeks, but stressed that weather extremes could make that longer or shorter.
We dont anticipate that it will be that long of a closure, Forman said Tuesday. The new drainage system is working great, but we dont have as strong of a root system [as wed like right now.]
The popular downtown spot was closed to the public on Aug. 4 while $900,000 in upgrades to its irrigation and drainage systems were installed.
A new layer of sod was placed in October and the parks department at the time felt the new grass needed the winter and some of the spring to fully take root.
But after some early-season heavy snowfall, the fences were taken down on Dec. 23 and people again flocked to the park.
Forman said the field is pretty squishy right now, and with possible rain in the forecast, it was time to close it off.
Its really, really wet out there, he said.
Forman said that while the turf made it through the winter in great condition, they now need to make sure it survives the spring thaw.

Local team's recycling robot a hit -

LEOMINSTER -- The lead programmer, electrician and driver of "Snaggle Tooth," a robot built by local students to compete in a regional robotics competition, summed up the effort needed to place sixth out of 36 teams last weekend in Springfield.
"It was hard until we learned how to do it," Cam Cardwell, 17, an electronics student in Leominster High School's Center for Technical Education Innovation program, said about the effort sponsored in part by the Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster.
For the 12th straight year, 18 local students from the Leominster and Fitchburg high schools, the Sizer School and Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School spent six weeks building a remote-controlled "bot" for the 2 1/2-minute competition held at the MassMutual Center.
This year's challenge was named "Recycle Rush," and teams had to design and build a 120-pound robot that could stack crates and recycling barrels and pick up litter, scoring points for each task completed.
Facing other teams of high-schoolers, many with robots built by professionals from General Motors, BAE Systems, NASA and the Clinton-based Nypro, the Terror Bots, the team's name, exceeded the high expectations of the team's mentors.
"This is, by far, the best group of students we've ever had," said Jacob Janssens, a Mount Wachusett Community College student and one of seven technical mentors who help provide the team direction.
His compliments were echoed by mentors Diana Alberti, a project manager for Comcast, Steve McNamara, a machine-shop instructor at LHS's CTEi, and Jon Blodgett, the teen-center director of the B&G Club of Leominster and Fitchburg.
The other four mentors are Bio-Techne engineer Jerry Westwood, and LHS instructors Mike Still and Todd Rathier, and Paul LaFebvre, who helps in the robotics lab at the B&G Club.
While each of the 18 students had a role in the development of the robot, one member of the team, 16-year-old Olivia Houle, is a seasoned veteran with 12 years of experience. Houle, a welding student at Monty Tech, began helping her father, Scott Houle, one of the founders of the robotics team and the plant manager of Steel-Fab Inc., build "bots" when she was only 4.
She provided all the welding for "Snaggle Tooth," so named because of the "teeth" on the lift mechanism used to grasp the crates and barrels during the competition.

Drywall is a large part of nearly every home and business today, and yet it is something that most people know very little about. This article will review the both basics of drywall and its many uses in today's world including drywall texture and drywall finish and the most common questions relating to drywall repair. While drywall is often easily overlooked, one hole in need of drywall repair can completely ruin a room's appearance by drawing attention to the problem area. The same thing goes for a drywall finish that was not done correctly, creating a real eyesore. And reversely, a well done drywall texture can add both depth and balance to a room.
Drywall is a common manufactured building material used globally for the finish construction of interior walls and ceilings. A drywall panel is made of a paper liner wrapped around an inner core made primarily from gypsum plaster. The plaster is mixed with fiber (typically paper and/or fiberglass), foaming agent, various additives that increase mildew and fire resistance, and water and is then formed by sandwiching a core of wet gypsum between two sheets of heavy paper or fiberglass mats. When the core sets and is dried, the sandwich becomes rigid and strong enough for use as a building material.
Drywall is typically available in 4 ft (1219 mm) wide sheets of various lengths. Newly formed drywall sheets are cut from a belt, the result of a continuous manufacturing process. In some commercial applications, sheets up to 16 ft are used. Larger sheets of drywall make for faster installation, since they reduce the number of joints that must be finished. Often, a sizable quantity of any custom length may be ordered, from factories, to exactly fit ceiling-to-floor on a large project. The most commonly used drywall is one-half-inch thick but can range from one quarter (6.35 mm) to one inch (25 mm). For soundproofing or fire resistance, two layers of drywall are sometimes laid at right angles to each other. In North America, five-eighths-inch-thick drywall with a one-hour fire-resistance rating is often used where fire resistance is desired.
Drywall repair can be easy, depending on the type and size of the hole. There are three types of holes "doorknob," "fist," and "large." The equipment needed is easy and the job is easy, so hesitate no more!
Drywall has many areas that can be addressed including drywall finish, drywall texture, and drywall repair and while each is related they are all separate areas with their own issues. Both the full-time contractor and the weekend DIY'er are confronted with regularly in their attempts to create the surroundings they desire.
