NORRISTOWN >> The start of a six-month demolition of the seven-story Montgomery Hospital building on Powell Street las week has unlocked a flood of emotional responses from former patients, employees and residents of the nearby Locust Street block.
Its sad, but it is what it is, said Leah Yzzi, a 16-year resident of Norristown who worked at the hospital as both a switchboard operator and as a teenage candy striper. It was stupid to move the hospital to East Norriton.
Yzzi gave birth to her three children Kailee, 13, Jordan 12, and Angelo, 8 at Montgomery Hospital.
I made a lot of friends there. My mom, Kathy Kriebel, worked there for 15 years as an oncology nurse, she said. My stepdad, Dave Trumbore, worked there as an infectious disease doctor. I actually candy striped there for two summers in high school. I liked doing that.
Yzzi was not concerned about the demolition work that will eventually remove the seven-story tower of the vacant hospital across the street from her home. The building faade is about 100 feet from her front door.
Karen Clarke, of Jamison, Bucks County, attended the Montgomery Hospital School of Nursing from 1973 to 1975 and then embarked on a 38-year career as a psychiatric nurse. She retired in late 2014.
I was 18 when I entered the program. It was a self-contained program and we lived in a dormitory across the back driveway from the hospital, Clarke said. We went to class in the basement of what became a medical office building. It was a hands-on type of learning environment.
Clarkes training was rushed at the end of the two-year program because they were closing the nursing program, she said. One of her training stints at Eastern State School and Hospital, a psychiatric facility, turned into a permanent job.
We went all over the place as part of our training. I thought it was an excellent program because I had the confidence to be able to go into any field of nursing, she said. I was very grateful for the instructors and the doctors that gave us some of the lectures. I think that training gave me a good nursing career.
Robert Holmes, 53, has lived across from the hospital on Locust Street for more than 15 years and was born at Montgomery. Continued...

A location known for years as the headquarters of New Hampshire primary campaigns is all but gone.
"It was very quick," said Bill Duschatko of the Bedford Town Council. "Much quicker than I expected."
The site will soon be the home of the new Goffe Mill Plaza. It will feature a Whole Foods store, a bank, restaurants and a 73-unit apartment building.
There is also a plan to preserve the past. The pedestrian bridge that once stood at the site could find a new home in Wentworth, which has been in the market for a new one.
"A couple of years ago, our 1909 historic bridge crossing over the Baker River Falls was condemned by the state Department of Transportation," said Jennifer Meade of the Friends of Wentworth Park and Recreation.
The New Hampshire Preservation Alliance helped Wentworth find the bridge in Bedford, and the hope is that Bedford's improvement project will help fill the gap in Wentworth.
"We're working with the DOT in hopes that they'll take the budget that they set aside for that little walkway to assist us, to give us the funds to see this through," Meade said.

U.S. homebuilders are feeling slightly less confident in their sales prospects, but their overall sales outlook remains favorable.
The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo builder sentiment index released Monday slipped to 53 this month, down two points from 55 in February. It's the third monthly decline in a row for the index.
Readings above 50 indicate more builders view sales conditions as good, however.
Labor shortages, a dearth of available land parcels cleared for new home construction and tougher mortgage-lending standards weighed on builders' confidence this month, said David Crowe, the builder group's chief economist.
"These obstacles notwithstanding, we are expecting solid gains in the housing market this year, buoyed by sustained job growth, low mortgage interest rates and pent-up demand," Crowe added.
Despite the increasingly favorable economy, home sales have been sluggish so far this year after a lackluster 2014.
Sales of new U.S. homes were basically flat in January, slipping 0.2 percent from the previous month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 481,000. Sales climbed 5.3 percent from a year earlier, when harsh winter weather caused home-buying to stall.
Still, lower mortgage rates and job gains over the past year are among the factors pointing to stronger sales this spring buying season, traditionally the peak period for home sales.
Mortgage rates remain near historic lows. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 3.86 percent last week, according to the mortgage giant Freddie Mac. A year ago it stood at 4.37 percent.
Meanwhile, employers have stepped up hiring. The economy added a solid 295,000 jobs last month, helping to bring down the national unemployment rate to a seven-year low of 5.5 percent. More Americans earning paychecks should eventually push home sales higher.

With the arrival of warmer weather and construction season, PennDOT is mounting ambitious plans for work on state-maintained roads in the Pittsburgh area.
VIDEO: Watch Bob Mayo's report
District 11, which includes Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence counties, will see 77 projects underway this year -- $272 million in construction. In Allegheny County alone, 133 miles of state roads will be paved or resurfaced.
(Scroll down to read a complete list of 2015 PennDOT road and bridge projects.)
Work is already being done on the Interstate 376/Parkway West improvement project, including reconstruction from Interstate 79 to the Fort Pitt Tunnel.
Drivers are bracing for delays and detours with so many projects planned for this year.
"When you're doing them all, that involves everybody. You can always take alternate routes, but I'm telling you, just one project at a time. That's my opinion," said Ruth Ann Henry, of Robinson Township.
A big traffic headache is coming this weekend. The Fort Pitt Tunnel outbound will be closed completely over the weekend for the removal of its ceiling. The closing from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday will mean big delays for some people heading home from NCAA tournament games at Consol Energy Center.
"It's a hard decision. We know it's going to impact people leaving that event. But again, being that it's nestled right in the middle of the weekend, we really didn't have any options, other than not doing this work this weekend," PennDOT District Executive Dan Cessna said. "And looking at the busy sporting season coming up with Pirates and Penguins, and hopefully Penguins playoffs, we really had to bite the bullet this weekend."
A major new project will start late this summer: the rehabilitation of the Liberty Bridge. Eventually, it will bring the closing of each of the four lanes, one at a time, over the course of the work, but the lane closing won't come until 2016. For the majority of next year, only three lanes will open on the bridge.
