Looking to have someone assemble your treadmill? Amazon
Amazon wants to have a hand in helping you get things repaired or assembled around your home.
Amazon Home Services launched Monday with over 2 million unique service offerings across 700 professional service types, the e-commerce giant said. The new services offering is made up of selected, invite-only professionals who provide a range of handyman services, including plumbing, TV wall mounting and grill assembly, along with more personal initiatives like music lessons.
For Amazon, the time seemed right for a service offering. The company says that 85 million of its US customers are shopping for products that need professional services.
The new undertaking puts Amazon in competition with business referral and rating services such as Angie's List and Yelp.
Amazon Home Services is launching across the US, but the availability of services is heftiest in major metro areas including New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. All of the service providers are required to maintain insurance, and if the job is not done right, Amazon said that it will work with customers and the service providers to address the problem. All pricing will be known upfront, and Home Services will include verified reviews, so users can hear from other customers on their experience with a chosen provider.
The new Amazon offering is available now. Service offerings will vary depending on your city.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Amazon: Your next source for handyman services?
Amazon

The next time you need a room painted, a leaky sink fixed or a TV mounted, you may be able to just add it to your Amazon shopping cart with a click rather than go through the usual rigmarole. Amazon Home Services is the tech giant's latest offering, letting users across the country line up an electrician or mechanic with a click.
It's an alternative to the traditional means of hiring such pros, but also a shot across the bows of competing sites like Angie's List, which maintains ratings and recommendations for local providers. But unlike Angie's List, there would be no fee to peruse reviews and pricing. And because you pay through Amazon, the billing process is simplified for both consumer and professional.
"What were trying to do for costumers is make it as easy to buy a service as it is to buy a physical product on Amazon today," explained Amazon's Peter Faricy to TODAY.
TODAY
The most popular services, by Amazon's estimate, are what you might expect: painter, handyman, plumber, cleaner, and so on. But there may be less common services available as well got some brush that needs clearing? Hire some goats to chew their way through it. All in all there's a total of 2.4 million service offers across more than 700 categories of professional service types, all of which Amazon claims to have evaluated and hand-picked. (No babysitters yet, unfortunately.)
It's a widespread but still limited roll-out: New York, L.A., San Francisco, and Amazon HQ Seattle are getting the most service coverage, so if you're in Chicago, Miami or a smaller town, don't expect the full rent-a-goat treatment. By the end of the year, however, Faricy hinted, the biggest 30 metro areas in the country should be catching up.
Want to give it a try? Just go to Amazon and look up a service just like you'd look up a book or gadget.

Amazon Home Services provides plumbers, painters and goats with a click
Last year, Amazon started toying with the idea of not only selling you a TV, but also hooking you up with someone who could mount it. Now, Amazon's Home Services marketplace is up and running 41 major US cities so you can order plumbers and plungers from the same place.
Aside from just being dumb convenient, ordering services through Amazon means that you get to know the pricing upfront, can read Amazon reviews of the people you're hiring, and that Amazon will pop in and start throwing its weight around if for some reason you aren't happy with the service.
So far, the highest concentration of professionals are concentrated in Seattle, New York City, Los Angeles, and San Fransisco. And here in New York City at least, options range from "iPhone repair" to "goat grazing service." So far that's no option to hire someone to harass the super of my apartment building about a leaky bathroom ceiling, but I can only assume that'll be coming soon. [Amazon]

Dynamic duo
3 Look out for interesting summer flowering bulbs for planting now. I love gladioli, like the beautiful dark 'Espresso, which can be started off in pots for planting out in a month or so. Eucomis is also a cracker, 'Sparkling Burgundy looks superb with a burnt orange dahlia such as 'Jescot Julie. This duo will look good for the whole season in a large pot together.

Lawn prep
4 To get it into good order for summer lounging, your lawn may be in need of attention. If it hasnt been cut over the winter, give it a raking to remove dead grass, moss and leaves. Brush the lawn to scatter worm casts, then cut the grass with the mower blades set high.

5 The unsung aconite needs to be lifted, divided and replanted. This looks best en masse, so find a corner under shrubs and replant the bulbs at the same level, spacing them at three bulbs every six inches. Within two years, theyll have merged into a solid golden carpet flowering in February the worst month of the year.

Forage scientist: Bermuda grass pasture stands can be very sustainable without nitrogen
The purple-colored patches on the right side of the fence are signs of invasion of common Bermuda grass into Coastal Bermuda grass pasture under a high stocking rate, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Research forage scientist. On the left side of the fence, the stocking rate was medium and shows much less invasion of common ecotypes. The pastures on both side of the fence received nitrogen fertilizer at usual rates during a 30-year study of the effects of stocking rates and nitrogen rates on pastures. OVERTON In an East Texas study on sandy, low-fertility soils, Bermuda grass pastures that have not received nitrogen fertilizer since the fall of 1984 are still in production, according to Dr. Monte Rouquette, Texas A&M AgriLife Research forage physiologist, Overton.
The study, which originally began in 1968 on pasture-research areas at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Overton, has been conducted by Rouquette since 1971.
The original purpose of the study was to evaluate various forage varieties for production and persistence using cow/calf pairs with different stocking rates, he said.
The original perception was that this might be a five-year study, Rouquette said. But after five years, reality set in, and I realized it was necessary to extend the time period.
By 1984, rising fossil fuel costs, and along with them, much higher nitrogen fertilizer costs, became a game-changer for beef producers. Rouquette responded by redirecting the grazing study to evaluate the persistence of both common and Coastal Bermuda grass under two different fertility-management strategies: over-seeding with ryegrass and using commercial nitrogen fertilizer; and over-seeding with clover without applying nitrogen.
I thought that this would be a good time to initiate a nutrient cycling experiment wherein pastures could be treated with nitrogen fertilization and over-seeded with ryegrass versus no nitrogen and over-seeded with clovers for nitrogen fixation, he said.
Rouquette noted that in 1984, all the test pastures had adequate levels of potassium and phosphorus. As the study proceeded, all test pastures received potassium and phosphorus fertilizer yearly in the form of 0-60-60. Lime was applied as needed.

Texas Crop Weather
All it takes is a day or two of warm weather and everyone gets a new outlook thinking that spring is finally here. Flowers emerge from the soil with tiny little crocus flowers, soon followed by larger daffodils and early tulips. However, we soon found out that colder weather, rain and maybe even snow can still happen just a few days later.
I was fortunate to spend a week in a warmer climate where the temperatures were in the 70s and 80s all week. Flowers were blooming, pollen was falling from the trees and everything was green. One day at Disneyworld with beautiful flowers everywhere was enough to remind me how special springtime can be. But on the drive home, the landscape kept getting less and less green, more brown grass and no leaves on the trees. When I got home, it was encouraging to see some of the flower beds coming alive, at least. Guess we just have to be patient. Spring did come, according to the calendar, and soon it will be here with warmer temperatures.
One of the first signs of spring in our lawns is when the grass starts to gradually turn green from being dormant all winter. That is when some of us get overly anxious and start applying spring applications of fertilizer and even spread crabgrass prevention products. In my opinion, it is best to wait until soil temperatures warm up before applying some of these products. Most crabgrass prevention products only last a couple of months in the soil, and if you apply them in early April, they may lose their effectiveness in early June. Crabgrass does not germinate until soil temperatures reach 60 to 65 degrees, so you should have plenty of time yet to apply it.
The same reasoning applies to applying lawn fertilizer. In spring, lawns need time for root development to take place. Rushing in with heavy applications of nitrogen forces the plant to spend energy by growing leaf blades instead of strengthening the root system. I know lawns look better when they are green and lush, but that also means you have to start mowing earlier as well.
If you have bare spots in your lawn, you can do some seeding anytime during April and May. My preference is to use a combination of good, disease resistant bluegrass varieties along with some perennial turf ryegrass varieties. Try to mix them into the top inch of soil and keep them moist for at least 3 weeks for germination to take place.
Remember, do not apply crabgrass prevention products to areas where you also plan to reseed new bluegrass. Those products do not know the difference between bluegrass seed and crabgrass seed and neither of them will germinate.
Take time this spring to walk around your lawn and see where you may need to reseed or where crabgrass was a problem last year. Weeds often appear in areas where bluegrass stands are sparse. Check out flowerbeds and gradually remove mulch as temperatures increase. Check shrubs for winter injury and replace, if necessary. There are plenty of jobs to do in your lawn and garden in early spring, so take advantage of those warm days when they arrive.
