Marking a major milestone in preparations for the 87th Oscar ceremony, the red carpet was rolled out on the sidewalk leading to the Dolby Theatre Wednesday, and it was quickly covered with plastic tarp for protection.
Workers rolled the roughly 500-foot-long, 33-foot-wide along Hollywood Boulevard, with a throng of photographers snapping images of the annual tradition.
Once the carpet was in place, workers covered it for protection from the elements, and from the footsteps of workers who are continuing preparations for Sundays ceremony.
The placement of the red carpet gave tourists a special treat. But just getting to Hollywood during the week leading up to the Oscars can be a chore.
On Sunday, Hollywood Boulevard was closed between Orange Drive and Highland Avenue, and some sidewalks in the area were blocked to accommodate installation of the decorations, large Oscar statues, the red carpet and the bleachers which can accommodate 771 star-gazers hoping to catch a glimpse of the celebrities making their way into the theater.
The Los Angeles Police Department, city Department of Transportation and California Highway Patrol all team up for traffic control in the days leading up to the event. The agencies will also combine for a maximum deployment period on Sunday, meaning all available traffic officers will be on duty in the area, according to the LAPDs West Traffic Division.
In addition to street closures already in place, Hawthorn Avenue will close between Highland and Orange on Friday.
On Saturday, the day before the show, a series of other closures will begin:
Orchid Street will close from 60 feet south of Franklin Boulevard to Orchid Alley.

The red carpet was in place Thursday and ready to go for Sundays 87th Academy Awards presentation, but motorists in Hollywood may be finding the street closures now in effect less than glamorous.

"This country has changed since we introduced the first modern cruise ship for Britain," he said.
"Look at our skylines, our hotels and our restaurants. Our tastes are far more sophisticated. This is Britain's cruise brand and we wanted to build something to reflect that."
Alongside British wines, beers, gins and cheeses and menus that reflect modern British dining are hundreds of pieces of specially commissioned art - the majority by female artists.
In a welcome speech in the ship's eye-catching atrium last night, Rob Brydon, the actor who starred in the ship's TV advertising campaign, said he had "taken a shine to cruising."
"You can have lunch with Marco Pierre White off Lefkada, sink a few Bollies with Olly Smith and be doing the two-step with Tess Daly in the library at teatime."
The ship cost 473m (Photo: James Morgan)
With tongue firmly in cheek he described the three floor Atrium, with its dramatic Star Burst installation as being "as grand as Elton John's downstairs loo" and "crowned by an earring donated by Beyonce".

Last night's gala evening welcomed celebrities on board the ship for a celebratory dinner and fireworks.

Two people were injured in Concord Tuesday afternoon when a car crashed into the wall of a medical center, county fire officials said.
Just before 4 p.m., crews responded to reports of a car crashing into a retaining wall at the Concord Health Center on the 3000 block of Willow Pass Road, said Capt. George Laing of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.
On arriving, firefighters found that the car had in fact crashed into one of the walls of the building, injuring two people, neither of whom was identified. One was taken to John Muir Medical Center, though the extent of their injuries was unknown, Liang said.
It wasnt clear exactly how much damage was done, but Liang said that a building inspector had been to the scene to evaluate the building.
