A POPULAR police community support officer from Ramsbottom died as a result of being exposed to asbestos while working as a gas fitter and a plumber earlier in his career, a coroner has ruled.
Mr Trevor Wyatt died on October 7 last year at the age of 57, after bravely battling mesothelioma for 16 months.
Assistant coroner Catherine McKenna ruled that Mr Wyatt's death was caused by industrial disease, at a hearing at Heywood Coroner's Court last Thursday.
Ms McKenna told the court that Mr Wyatt's wife, Jeanette, was not present for the hearing as she said that she did not feel able to attend court.
Instead, the court heard a statement from Mrs Wyatt, in which she said that her husband is "sadly missed by us all".
The statement read: "Trevor was a real family man. He loved football with the boys. Our youngest plays for Manchester United, so there was a lot of travelling to and from the training ground.
"Trevor was never ill, and he never had any days off sick. Trevor used to say: 'If I ever get ill, I know it will be something big, because I am never ill'."
Mr Wyatt, who was born in Bury, was the youngest of 13 children, and attended St Paul's Primary School in Bury, later moving to Seedfield Comprehensive.
He completed an apprenticeship in plumbing, and later worked for SG Woodcock in Bury, but was made redundant from the firm, aged 21.
He then began to take on subcontracting work, and later took on the role of caretaker at Bury College in 1995, where he met his wife in 1996, who was working as a cashier.

Costly winter repairs to CNY homes -
March 9, 2015 by
Mr HomeBuilder
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - From frozen pipes to leaky roofs, this winter has taken a toll on many Central New York homes.
Winter repairs can be very costly, but before you spend a lot of money on a plumber or roofer, it might be best to spend a few bucks on a quick repair, and then call your insurance agent.
Homeowners like Betty Paul are dealing with a collapsed garage after the heavy snowfall this month.
"My van with my lift for my power wheelchair is underneath the roof, so I'm stuck right here until the insurance company can do something," said Paul.
Betty is among thousands of Central New Yorkers dealing with property damage caused by this month's severe weather.
"When you have a situation like we have here not just in Central New York, but in the Northeast, where insurance companies are getting thousands of claims, delays might be inevitable," said Timothy Dodge, Assistant Vice President of Research with Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York, Inc.
Agents say the best advice for filing your winter claims is: - call your agent as soon as you can - take pictures of any damage in your home - only make temporary repairs before the agents survey the damage - keep all of your receipts
"Don't spend a whole lot of money on repairs, just enough to keep occupants safe," said Dodge.
For those who like to head south during the winter, make sure to leave your heat on and drain your pipes. And it's also important to note, as those snow banks melt, the threat of flooding is soon to follow.
"People who are worried about that should talk to your insurance agent today about flood insurance because when you buy it doesn't take affect until 30 days after you buy it," said Dodge.

A plague of giant mutant super rats resistant to traditional pesticides could soon outnumber the human population of Britain by a ratio of two to one.
That's the terrifying doomsday warning from pest control experts who may just have a vested interest in not seeing their budgets further slashed by local authorities.
An increasing number of huge mutant rats - some up to 18 inches long - have been spotted across the UK in recent years thanks to the abundance of food strewnaround by litter louts whodumptheir pizza and burger leftoverson the streets. Dash it all, one outsize middle-class rodent was even spotted recentlyin London's fashionable Belsize Park.
Yet pest control budgets have been slashed by a quarter, with 200 local authorities in England spending 24.4 per cent less on average since 2010. There has also been a 16 per cent cut in the amount spent on street cleaning.
The British Pest Control Association warns that rat numbers are rising by about 15 per cent a year, driven by the ready availability of food.
And John McNeice, director of Scottish Pest Control Services, told the Daily Mail: "We see big rats in cold stores. The rats grow a very thick fur. That can make them look bigger. You might see a rat under a pallet that looks as big as a cat."
The Mail reports that genetic testing carried out at Huddersfield University has indicated that some rats have developed a mutation that allows them to survive conventional poisons. As a result, some pest controllers want stronger poisons to be allowed.
Meanwhile, in other rodent-related news, scientists in Norway have announced that black rats may have been wrongly blamed for spreading the bubonic plague, which killed millions of people across Europe from the mid-14th century. They now believe that GERBILS from Asia may have been responsible for the deadly epidemics of the Black Death.
"If we're right, we'll have to rewrite that part of history," said Professor Nils Christian Stenseth, of the University of Oslo, as reported by the BBC.
