Raleigh leaders considering fees for evening parking - March 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    RALEIGH (WTVD) --

Raleigh's Parking Administrator Gordon Dash says a small percentage of drunk and rambunctious people who park for free in city-owned decks on nights and weekends are doing everything from vandalizing elevators, to leaving personal trash in the stairwells.

"It started out great, but we're really finding that there's a revelry crowd, which is common with nightlife, which sticks around a lot longer than other folks when they go home, and they're the ones most responsible for what's happening in our parking decks," Dash said. "Broken bottles, there's also the human waste factor as well, unfortunately. Those things take a long time to clean up and the smells have to be dealt with. "

"Elevators are often out of commission for days at a time and the ones who feel the brunt of that are the daytime customers who pay for parking and they expect a whole lot better service when they come in to work," he added.

Dash is asking the Raleigh City Council to consider charging for parking on nights and weekends - anything from a $5 flat fee, to a $1 an hour.

The city council has considered that fee before, and some say the City is now using this problem to justify the fee to help pay off debts.

However, Dash says the problems are real, and instead of maintaining and repairing parts of the deck, maintenance crews have now become janitors.

"About 60 percent of their duties now are on the janitorial and they were never expected to be that when they first started," he said.

Based on previous figures, the City could stand to gain about $1 million in revenue if they charged a $5 flat fee for night and weekend parking.

Dash expects city council to take up the issue again in their upcoming work session.

A passion for alternative sports has led Mandan High School junior Corey Peterson to design and craft custom skate decks.

During the winter, Peterson can be found on his snowboard, while during the other seasons he is on a skateboard or shooting paintballs.

"Ive been skateboarding for four years, snowboarding for three years and paintballing for two," said Peterson, who consider skateboarding to be his favorite of the three.

"Ive used skateboarding as something to do whenever something happens or when Im mad or sad," Peterson said. "I find it more freeing."

That passion has led him to customize decks by sanding the graphics off a board, stenciling or sketching a design onto it and using a bandsaw to cut the designs into the board and shape it.

After thats done, a new graphic can be put onto it. Then the board is polyurethaned to make it look new.

The time it takes for this process can be from less than one hour to more than three hours. Once the new board is finished, it can then be a wall hanger or used to skate.

"Skateboarding has been more of the core of my life than anything else. Its more me," said Peterson, who also skates in competitions.

During a competition in September, Peterson took third place one day for an event, and second the next day.

"I love skating in competitions not because I want to win but because they bring everyone in the skateboarding community together, said Peterson, who hosts the Mandan Jam in June along with senior Dylan Kahl and junior Zack Eckroth.

My Mold Removal Guys Issue Warning on How Mold Companies Get Rich Selling Junk Science - March 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

My Mold Removal Guys have taken action against an insidious trend in mold remediation, as companies rip off consumers through the misuse and misapplication of mold testing.

Eatontown, New Jersey, United States of America February 20, 2015 /MarketersMedia/

The oldest trick in the marketing book is to present your product as a solution to a problem. The removal of fear is at the heart of this, and so its all too easy for conmen to create fear and then solve this fake issue. New Jersey mold removal company My Mold Removal Guys have observed these tactics in action, and are warning current and potential customers to be discerning when it comes to choosing a mold remediation provider. They have just published a new expos on these practices.

Their new report goes into some detail about the common scams My Mold Removal Guys have had reported to them by customers who have approached them after having been ripped off by unscrupulous firms. The clients themselves talk about how these fake experts told them how dangerous specific mold could be and how their familys health and specifically their childrens health could be in imminent danger.

But many of these companies send out salesmen. Not scientists or certified microbial consultants. These salesmen will use very complex scientific monologues they dont even understand to sell people mold tests they dont need. One such unscrupulous company offering mold remediation in New Jersey is observably a great success, but its CEO has been arrested 3 times in the last 5 years for tax evasion and fraud.

A spokesperson for My Mold Removal Guys explained, We get former clients of his and other unscrupulous mold companies who tell us these horror stories all the time. Weve even seen homeowners with mold, and NO water leaks who had $18,000 waterproofing systems installed and NOTHING was done to treat the mold. Were not against mold testing. It serves a crucial role when done properly prior to mold remediation. Were against the misuse and misapplication of it. We want to make sure consumers know when theyre getting ripped off and when theyre dealing with a reputable and honest company.

About My Mold Removal Guys: My Mold Removal Guys was established by Randy Cece the owner of MMRG, LLC. Mr. Cece is certified by the IAQ, ESA, EAA and 4 other of the nations leading environmental firms. As seen on TV, they have undertaken mold assessment, inspections, testing and remediation for 12 years. Their goal is to raise the bar worldwide for environmental standards, ethics and regulations. They have already started in his hometown of Eatontown, New Jersey. Already, and are quickly becoming one of the states most respected environmental consultants.

She said the citys efforts to get properties off septic systems and onto a central sewer system must continue.

The sewer project thats very important to our environment, and we need to finish, Mitchell said Friday. I just want to work hard and do my best for the city of Ingram.

Police warning after spate of sneak-in burglaries on Stockport street - March 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Patrols have been stepped up after sneak thieves targeted homes on a Stockport street searching for unlocked doors.

The burglaries happened on Hillcrest Road, Offerton, between Sunday (February 28) at 9.30pm and 12.30pm the following day.

Residents woke on Monday to discover their homes had fallen victim.

One had a coat and clothes worth a total of 600 taken, another had boots valued at 150, pet accessories and 2 in cash stolen.

At least two other homes or sheds were targeted but the thieves were unable to find anything to steal.

Inspector Steve Gilbertson, from Stockport police, said officers had been giving the area extra attention.

He added: "People can leave things in the porch that individually may not be worth that much but can soon add up.

"We have four victims of crime on the same street so we want to raise awareness that there are people who will take a chance and be opportunistic, taking what they can."

Another warning has been issued after two houses on Broadway, in Bramhall, were also targeted.

A thief sneaked into a home on Wednesday (February 25) at 11.15am and took the keys to a blue Ford Sirocco before escaping in it.

Master-Planned: What Makes Austin's Urban Village a 'Masterwork' of Planning - March 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

When the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport closed 16 years ago, leaving open 700 acres of real estate close to the Austin city center, developers saw the perfect for a planned community. In 2007, construction began on the Mueller Community, which many now hold as a model of modern master-planning in the new urbanism vein; transit-oriented yet focused on the needs of pedestrians. A recent installment in NPR's cities project highlights what else Mueller may be getting right.

Greg Weaver, Mueller project manager with Catellus Development, spoke with NPR about the theories behind the community. Instead of taking the shape of an expansive grid, Mueller is purposefully dense, with small yards and large front porches. Garages are at the back of houses, which further downplays the primacy of cars. But Weaver insists Mueller isn't too utopic:

"I mean, the whole idea of porches is a bit of a cliche, but it works," Adams continues, speaking from the back deck of his home in Mueller. "People are on their porches, people know their neighbors. It's a very convivial place."

A research team at Texas A&M University polled Mueller residents and proved Weaver's vision might really be working: residents spend an average of 90 fewer minutes a week in their cars, and report increased levels of physical activity, decreased use of electricity, and even more friends.
