FAQ: Here's the 411 on the demolition of Avalon at Edgewater - March 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

EDGEWATER Nearly two months after a maintenance worker's blow torch sparked a blaze that destroyed 240 units of a luxury apartment complex and left nearly 500 people homeless, residents will soon begin the process of sifting through what remains.

On Friday, workers at the Avalon Edgewater complex off River Road began ripping down the amenities building with cranes. The residential portion of the Russell building is scheduled to be demolished starting on Monday. The other building in the complex, River Mews, is still standing and was spared of the roaring flames.

You've got questions, we've got answers. So here's an FAQ:

    What's the process here?

A spokesman for AvalonBay told NJ Advance Media that WCD Construction Management will oversee the demolition and salvaging. Subcontractor NorthStar, a big demolition firm, will handle the work. NorthStar's workers will be going grid-by-grid with heavy equipment.

"Any recovered items will be individually tagged, logged and photographed and placed in bins marked with the originating grid location, and the bins will be transferred to a locked walk-in metal container as recovered," the company said.

"The containers will be on site and secured. Video surveillance with recording capabilities will be installed to record the recovery operations. As the metal containers are filled, or as a grid is completed, residents will be notified with instructions on how to claim any recovered items."

OK, but residents are not allowed to comb through the site?

Correct. Local officials have deemed the Russell building unsound, so only authorized personnel can be on site for safety reasons. It's about liability.

How do the residents feel about it?

Plaza building demolition work delayed. - March 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition of the Plaza Building at 100 N. Bridge St. in downtown Chippewa Falls will continue this week, but workers are a little behind schedule.

Originally, No Mercy Excavating, the contractor responsible for the demolition, was expecting to begin phase two of the project on Monday, March 9. That phase will close both Bridge and Spring streets for multiple days.

But now phase two isn't expected to begin until Wednesday or Thursday of this week. A construction update on the city's website explained that the project was delayed because of the extreme cold temperatures this last week.

When phase two begins, Bridge Street will be closed between Spring and Central streets and Spring Street will be closed between Bay and Bridge streets.

Crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. to ensure the shortest street closures possible, but the streets could be closed for three days.

Businesses on these streets will remain open, though, and parking is available in the two city lots near the roundabout at the intersection of Bridge and River streets as well as other nearby city lots.

After the building is down, trucks will begin hauling debris away. That work is expected to take the remainder of the month.

The city is warning residents to stay away from the building during the demolition for safety reasons.

LPE demolition on pace to begin in April - March 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

RESERVE The St. John the Baptist Parish School Board unanimously decided Wednesday night to table awarding a Lake Pontchartrain Elementary School demolition contract until later in the month.

In a special meeting called to decide on the matter, Superintendent Kevin George asked the Board to vote to table the decision until the Boards March 19 meeting. He said the district was working with the lowest bidder on paperwork related to the districts Disadvantage Business Enterprise Policy.

Unanimously passed at the Boards Sept. 4 meeting, the goal of the policy the brainchild of District 10 School Board Member Rodney Nicholas is to provide maximum opportunities for participation in its construction contracts and procurements for goods and services for businesses owned by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals and for businesses employing such persons.

In January All South Consulting Engineers Cindy Janecke, the project manager for LPEs build, said demolition of the school would be completed within 110 days of the to-be-chosen contractor mobilizing on the site, adding the demolition contract should be awarded in March with demolition starting in April.

On Thursday George said he was confident everything would be in order to award the demolition contract March 19 to the lowest qualified bidder, ARC Abatement 1 with a $615,278 bid.

Its just a matter of ARC understanding and completing paperwork, George said. We dont anticipate any issues or problems with that.

From thin air, 40,000 balloons add up to one giant public art installation - March 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ROCHESTER, N.Y.

    I am a twister.

I make balloon animals, doesnt cut it, you see. Right now youre picturing dinky dogs and flowers and swords that youve seen at kids parties and carnivals.

Picture this instead: 40,000 balloons, mimicking the texture of wood on a sinking ship, the gnarled tangle of coral, the whirling tentacles of squid and the flashing fins of fish of all species. Picture balloons of every color and shape, stretching from floor to ceiling, five stories tall.

    Thats what twisters can do.

A crew of about 60 twisters assembled here for four days last week. The resulting massive sculpture, known as Balloon Manor, is now on display as public art. You can see it in the Sibley Tower Building in downtown Rochester.

For a few more days, that is. Soon, it will be time to pop the whole thing.

But dont think about that. For now, just gaze at the astounding profusion of balloons.

Under the direction of balloon artists Larry Moss and Kelly Cheatle, a crew of balloon twisters built a five-story underwater scene in four days in Rochester, N.Y. (Airigami)

That coral reef is made of a few hundred pink heart-shaped balloons, twisted together four at a time and then tied together with uninflated balloons. Those two masts on the ship started as 420 individual six-inch-long balloons, tied end-to-end in circles of five and stacked about two stories high. Each tentacle of that gargantuan octopus is a complex braided strand of nine balloon threads, each one as thick as my arm.
