In a career spanning much of the 20th century, late American landscape architect Dan Kiley designed over 1,000 projects all over the U.S., including the grounds of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the Miller Garden (a collaboration with Modernist great Eero Saarinen) in Columbus, Indiana, and the leafy atrium in the Ford Foundation headquarters in New York City (recently named a landmark interior.) Despite these famous credentials, Kiley, who passed away in 2004 at age 91, is far from widely-recognized himself. In an effort to rectify this, the Cultural Landscape Foundation decided to launch Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley, a comprehensive traveling exhibit celebrating Kiley's far-reaching influence on our built environment. The show, which made its NYC debut at the Center for Architecture last night, features 45 newly-commissioned photographs of 27 representative Kiley work, plus updates on the current state of each project.
Inaugurated at the Boston Architectural College in fall 2013, the show is apparently booked till 2017, a fact that TCLF president Charles Birnbaum thinks signals greater public recognition for Kiley at last. And that is critical, because the upshot of honoring Kiley's work is also calling attention to their stewardship. The Kiley Garden () in Tampa, Florida, for example, is currently rated as "starting to falter" by the TCLF, despite recent efforts to restore it.
As the Tampa Bay Times details, Tampa-based landscape architect Ron Sil spearheaded a $4.7M restoration of the Kiley's rooftop checkerboard garden, which had fallen into despair and began leaking water to the garage underneath. Completed in fall 2010, the effort saw a complete reconstruction of the garden as Kiley had designed it, a process that involved following the precise mathematical formula Kiley used to place the concrete and grass patches. Still, the TCLF believes there's much to be done, including replanting the more than 100 crape myrtles trees that were removed for the restoration process.

KENINGAU: The villagers of Kampung Ulu Keningau, Jalan Kimanis can heave a sigh of relief after an applicant of a 50-acre land in their settlement has been told to leave the area.
Community leaders in three villages who had strongly objected to the land application expressed their gratitude to the Lands & Surveys Department and its office in Keningau for promptly issuing the notice to the applicant.
Samalang village head Aliman Nulantan said they were grateful to the department for quickly attending to their plight and expelling the workers who were already clearing the land in Kampung Ulu Keningau since a week ago.
We highly appreciate the efforts of the department in solving the dispute by making a check on the land application PT 2012131415 by one Thien Swee Jin @ Annie Thien and then confirming it as invalid because the location of the land applied for was at Mile 16 of Jalan Kimanis, said Aliman yesterday.
He also hoped that the land application by Annie Thien will be cancelled with immediate effect and the area given to the residents in the villages of Samalang, Keningau and Ulu Keningau who are the early settlers in the area. On Tuesday the local newspapers highlighted the land dispute with the three community leaders expressing their strong objection after discovering the 50-acre area had been applied for even though the villagers had previously submitted applications twice.
They applied in 1976 and again in the 1980s but were denied because the Sabah Parks did not permit land in that area to be applied for settlement.
The community leaders are Native Chief Representative (WKAN) Jassin Lumau, Samalang village head Aliman Nulantan, Keningau village chief Joanis Doimpin and Ulu Keningau village chief Petrus Langkihang all expressed their objection to the application on the basis that the area applied for had been settled by local villagers since the 1980s.
They had asked the State government and the relevant authorities to intervene in the dispute.

Control of the upper house will be crucial for Mike Baird's plan to partially lease the electricity network, but this result is more uncertain than who will form the government.
A tablecloth ballot paper enlarged by 19 micro parties, one of which, No Land Tax, has won the prized left-hand spot most likely to draw the donkey vote, adds to the drama.
While it may be a new reality for Canberra, minor parties have controlled the upper house of the NSW Parliament for two decades.
Horse trading with the Christian Democrats and Shooters and Fishers Party have become essential skills for the NSW government of the day to get its agenda passed into legislation. The Greens, with five seats, usually side with Labor.

The previous Liberal and Nationals government needed both the Christian Democrats and Shooters on side to get the budget and signature legislation passed. This meant Barry O'Farrell grappled with controversial minor party demands, such as shooting in national parks, and foetal personhood legislation.
A falling out with the Shooters resulted in key legislation, including planning reform, being blocked.
The same fate potentially awaits any poles and wires bill. The Shooters have campaigned on opposing it, and the Reverend Fred Nile has raised concerns about job protections (he wants five-year job assurances for electricity workers under any lease), and Chinese ownership, and wants an inquiry.
Like many governments before it, Baird's team, if re-elected, is hoping to strengthen its arm in the upper house by picking up a crucial extra seat, or nine, on Saturday night.
But the luck of the No Land Tax party, a group of real estate investors backed by a six-figure campaign, in gaining the prominent left-hand position on the ballot, may work against this.

This year's Architectural Digest Home Design Show paired with Dining by Design, presented by the Design Industry's Foundation for Fighting Aids, was a spectacular interior designer's dream.
For me it was a jam-packed three days of nonstop learning, inspiration and total design fun. Not only did I have the opportunity to attend Interior Design Camp NY, I met some fun and creative industry professionals.
The Tile Bar's Jacob Herskovits, brand ambassador and director of marketing, was such a pleasure. He was sure to embrace every designer in the showroom at 45 W21st St. Before the designers feasted upon the Tile Bar's stylish and sassy backsplash and flooring offerings, we shared a delectable brunch of fresh pastries, bagels, muffins and mimosas.
On to Pier 94, where Architectural Digest Home Design Show awaited. This is not your typical home show. If you love "Architectural Digest" magazine and the products featured therein, this forum was certainly the place to be. Two of my favorite appliance brands, SMEG and AGA were both exhibiting. Italy's SMEG manufactures state-of-the-art appliances custom designed to your particular style for your home. Whether you desire the retro style of the '50s in your kitchen or a wine fridge that looks like the front end of a vintage automobile for your game room, SMEG can do it. SMEG's signature models bear the British and Italian flags on their retro refrigerators -- also available in bright and retro solid colors.
Innovation and out-of-the-ordinary designs were smattered throughout the exhibit. Aero Pod by artist Dean Jackson grabbed my attention; a modern style storage pod that can be customized for your personal needs. I was particularly drawn to the brandy and cigar storage pod, perfect for storing the Acid blondie and a decanter of your favorite scotch or brandy.
So many new toys intrigued my designing mind. Two of my favorite pieces of art were from two different artists, Delah Brucelli's "Walking the Edge" and Craig Alan's plexi acrylic painted tulle and hay designs.
My designing and column-writing friend from New York, Claudia Jacobs, and I had the privilege of attending the preview event at Dining By Design. This gala fundraising event is where dining room vignette installations are created by some of the top designers in the industry. Furniture, tableware and other items are auctioned off at this event. This year's gala raised more than $650,000 and was held at Pier 92, adjacent to the Home Show.
Some of my favorite dining installations were Essie, designed by Robert Verdi, in which Verdi created centerpieces of Essie nail polish colors. Hermes' colorful Trojan horse collage created a buzz, too. Benjamin Moore designed by HGTV's Design Star Tyler Wisler created a bistro atmosphere and Echo Design's Lost in Print was so pretty in pink.
If you're searching for design inspiration, this event is certainly a spectacular one and well worth the short trip to the Big Apple.

Being able to control your home's lights from your phone can be useful. Lights can be switched on or off from your bed, for example, or set to come on when you arrive home. Now, Switchmate is offering this functionality without the need for new fittings and wiring like, say, the WeMo Light Switch.
"Smart products are supposed to make our lives simpler, but their set-up alone is often needlessly complicated," says Switchmate founder Daniel Peng. "And for those of us who don't own property, those installation processes aren't just complicated, they're impossible."
Peng says that Switchmate aims to provide users with the convenience of a connected home without the hassle of a complicated installation process. The device is a cover that snaps onto an existing light switch magnetically. It is compatible with either US toggle or rocker switches and contains a motor that will flick the switch when activated.
Connected lightbulbs like the Philips Hue and Emberlight can offer a similar, simple means of achieving smart lighting functionality. They are, however, more expensive than standard bulbs and ultimately will still need to be replaced.
Once a Switchmate has been placed onto a light switch, users can tap the device to switch the light on or off, or they can control it using a companion Android or iOS app on their smartphone. Lights can be controlled without having to move over to the switch, can be scheduled to come on and off when users are on holiday and to come on when users are detected arriving home.
The device connects to the app via Bluetooth, meaning users must be nearby in order to control the device, schedule it to switch lights on or off at certain times or change its settings. An optional Logitech Harmony Hub can also be added that allows users to control the device from anywhere, with the company hoping to develop their own hub in the future.
Switchmate is coming to the end of a successful crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. At the time of writing, users can pledge from US$45 to receive a Switchmate device. Assuming all goes to plan with the campaign and roll-out, the devices are expected to start being shipped from December of this year.
The video below provides an introduction to Switchmate.
