Spring cleaning checklist dont forget your windows, window coverings - March 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

If youre like some people (ahem) who put up window treatments and never give them a second thought, even as dust accumulates, this might just be the season to pay them a little respect.

No need to stress out about adding another task to your spring-cleaning to-do list: You dont have to clean curtains, shades and the windows themselves THAT often. And many times, its not that difficult.

In our experience, the windows and window treatments are something that people avoid cleaning because theyre not entirely sure the best way to do it, says Betsy Goldberg, home director of Real Simple magazine.

Its not hard, she adds. It just takes a little bit of time.

If simply removing dirt isnt reason enough to clean, consider that dust can dull the fabric of curtains and shades. Household odours can linger. And washing helps preserve the fabric, especially for window treatments that get a daily dose of sunshine, says Tammy Kupernik of retailer Country Curtains.

If you dont wash them, the sun will break down the threads, she says.

Washing them keeps the colours bright, it keeps the threads soft and it does add to the life of the curtain.

Window treatments should be cleaned once or twice a year, experts say, and the best method varies by material. Some can be refreshed in the washer or cleaned with a vacuum, while others may require a pro.

Start by reading the care tag or directions that came with the product: Some items are dry clean only. If the instructions are unavailable, experts offer general guidelines:

Stanford Researchers Reportedly Working On Air Cleaning Window Screen To Fight Smog - March 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

STANFORD (CBS SF) A team of researchers at Stanford University have developed material for a window screen that could help people in areaswith high amounts of air pollution breathe easier.

According to the Wall Street Journal, materials science and engineering professor Yi Cui and his team have developed material for the highly-efficient air filter using nanotechnology.

Cui told the Journal that he was inspired to create the filter during visits to China, his homeland. So I come by and have the motivation to think about what we can do to remove those particles. Thats what an engineer likes to do, to solve problems, he said.

Air pollution has long been anissue in China. A recent documentary on the countrys smog called Under The Dome has gone viral, netting more than 180 million views before being censored by the Chinese government.

The professor and his team used a material common in surgical gloves and turned it into a spider-like fiber much thinner than a human hair. The fiber was made into a filter that was able to capture 99 percent of the particles.

Cui said they hope the material can be used for window screens or air filter masks.

Window washer dies after fall from Manhattan building - March 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A window washer fell from scaffolding and plummeted five floors to his death in Tribeca, authorities said.

The victim, who sources said was not wearing a harness at the time of the fatal accident, fell from a building at Greenwich and Jay streets at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday and landed in front of the high-end rug store Carini Lang.

He was sitting outside the window, and just holding on with his left hand while cleaning the window with his right hand, said Edin Arias, 39, a carpenter who was working in the area.

When I saw him he wasnt wearing no harness nothing to get him safe, nothing to keep them safe, Arias said.

I was surprised he wasnt wearing any safety equipment, said John Cataneo, who works as a plumber and witnessed the fatal plunge. Any kind of contracting activity like that you have to take your safety equipment seriously and make sure you have got it and its in good working condition.

The victim, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

There was a woman standing in front of me with a stroller and she started screaming, A man fell, call 911! I didnt get too close but I saw his head was on the snow, the witness, who refused to be identified, explained.

Postal Service asks customers to clear areas around mailbox - March 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) -The following is a release from the Postal Service regarding mail delivery following Wednesday's storm: Winter storms and along with them the cold, snow and icy conditions can make delivery of your mail very challenging for letter carriers and your Post Office.

Support your letter carrier and Post Office in providing safe and timely delivery of your mail.

We will do our best to make delivery to all addresses. At the same time, we must insure the safety of our carriers along their routes. Were asking that customers take caution themselves as they clear a path for their letter carrier.

Postal residential and business customers are asked to clear your mailbox area of snow, sleet, slush, ice and debris, including clearing nearby sidewalks, steps and porches.

If mailboxes are blocked off and conditions are difficult, letter carriers must always consider safety and accessibility first. Letter carriers are instructed to not deliver to mailboxes and locations which are too hazardous or unsafe to access.

Whether you have a street-side, centralized neighborhood/cluster unit, house, or door mailbox, postal letter carriers need to have clear and safe access to deliver your mail.

Your local Post Office and letter carriers greatly appreciate the publics support.
