Forage scientist: Bermuda grass pasture stands can be very sustainable without nitrogen

OVERTON In an East Texas study on sandy, low-fertility soils, Bermuda grass pastures that have not received nitrogen fertilizer since the fall of 1984 are still in production, according to Dr. Monte Rouquette, Texas A&M AgriLife Research forage physiologist, Overton.

The study, which originally began in 1968 on pasture-research areas at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Overton, has been conducted by Rouquette since 1971.

The original purpose of the study was to evaluate various forage varieties for production and persistence using cow/calf pairs with different stocking rates, he said.

The original perception was that this might be a five-year study, Rouquette said. But after five years, reality set in, and I realized it was necessary to extend the time period.

By 1984, rising fossil fuel costs, and along with them, much higher nitrogen fertilizer costs, became a game-changer for beef producers. Rouquette responded by redirecting the grazing study to evaluate the persistence of both common and Coastal Bermuda grass under two different fertility-management strategies: over-seeding with ryegrass and using commercial nitrogen fertilizer; and over-seeding with clover without applying nitrogen.

I thought that this would be a good time to initiate a nutrient cycling experiment wherein pastures could be treated with nitrogen fertilization and over-seeded with ryegrass versus no nitrogen and over-seeded with clovers for nitrogen fixation, he said.

Rouquette noted that in 1984, all the test pastures had adequate levels of potassium and phosphorus. As the study proceeded, all test pastures received potassium and phosphorus fertilizer yearly in the form of 0-60-60. Lime was applied as needed.

Thirty-year study looks at Bermuda grass sustainability without fertilizer

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 27 March) The City Agriculturists Office has asked the Department of Agriculture for a cloud seeding over Davao City, following a month-long dry spell that could potentially damage at least 7,000 hectares of crops.

In a letter to DA Regional Director Remelyn Recoter, City Agriculturist Rocelio T. Tabay attributed the dry spell to the El Nino phenomenon.

According to Tabay, the dry spell threatens to affect 11,151 farmers working in 7,075.15 hectares of farmlands in Paquibato, Marilog, Toril, Tugbok and Baguio Districts.

In a text message Thursday, Recoter said the agency would still have to validate the request.

There are other factors that needed to be considered before a request for crop seeding could be accommodated, she said, such as cloud formation, wind direction and standing crops.

The crop most affected by the dry spell are high value crops fruits, industrial crops, legumes, root crops and vegetables.

Fruits were at the most risk, with 2,718.46 hectares and 4,687 farmers potentially affected.

Corn, meanwhile, ranked second in terms of land area of crops being affected, at 2,449.55 hectares.

The CAO estimates that around 2,501 farmers would be affected by the dry spell.

Rainfed rice could also face a dry spell, with the department estimating 481.67 hectares being affected and 538 farmers.

Davao asks DA for cloud seeding

ITS heartening to know that cloud seeding operations have started. It has been days since the last rain. There was, the other night, but it was just enough to cool the air, and barely satisfied the thirst of the earth. How worse is it in the farmlands?

With heat like this, we can expect a bumper harvest of fruits, but agriculture is more than just fruits, and farmers are in dire need of rain.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has already announced that the long-awaited El Nio has arrived. Its a borderline, weak El Nino, but quite late, right smack into the countrys summer season. This means, we are up for a very hot summer. Along with it, dried up farms, grass fires, and even forest fires.

There is indeed reason to be very careful, especially for residents who live near patches of grasslands, the cogonal areas, and our remaining tree farms and forests. All these are in danger.

We can only suggest that the city help cut down and dispoase of tall grasses in empty lots, that will help a lot. The barangays can also gather their people to do the same. Grass fires, after all, can start at just one flick of a lighted cigarette and spread fast. Let the residents keep tabs of where the empty lots full of cogon are, and encourage them to keep watch if not help clean these areas up.

The greater danger is in forest fires as we all know that growing back forests take time. We can still recall how fires ate up a substantial area of Marilog District more than a decade ago, again because of El Nino. We cannot let this happen again as Marilog and neighboring districts like Calinan and Baguio Districts stand as the citys lungs and rain-maker. The remaining greeneries and fruit farms there continue to provide us the valuable ground and surface water and the moisture that generates rain for all.

Let it be known to all that the danger of such fires is real and let each resident take upon themselves to be the guardian of their neighborhood.

During a school board meeting on Tuesday, Glendale Unified Supt. Dick Sheehan recommended to the school board that the district continue to use artificial turf fields made up of crumb rubber, which is composed largely of recycled tire material.

School officials initially switched to using crumb-rubber fields about a decade ago to reduce the cost of watering and re-seeding the grass.

But in late 2014, an NBC News report told the story of a college soccer coachwho created a list of American soccer players nationwide, all of whom had played on crumb-rubber fields and had been diagnosed with cancers such as lymphoma and leukemia.

The news report concerned local parents, who told the Glendale school board that their children bring home bits of rubber in their clothes and that their faces and hands are filthy after playing on the material.

In response, Glendale school officials hired GeoSyntec to analyze the health risk of the crumb-rubber samples from Glendale fields according to standards laid out by both the U.S. and California Environmental Protection Agencies.

What we found was the crumb-rubber material that we currently use actually came out below the standards, said Alan Reising, director of facilities for Glendale Unified.

With the testing of the fields complete, Sheehan said the school district did its due diligence in closely examining the fields.

Its going to be the superintendents recommendation that we remain with the same filler weve been using, he said.

Schools likely to stick with crumb rubber turf

All plants need light to survive. Anytime a sun-loving plant is put in the shade the plant is essentially being put on a diet. Many homeowners try to amend this issue by applying large quantities of fertilizer, but if the plant isnt able to get light then it is not able to feed.

One thing to keep in mind: the human eye is very poor at seeing degrees of shade. We can tell that an area is shaded, but not the amount of shade. Light meters are availale to measure the amount of light filtering into a garden and are useful tools for providing the necessary feedback.

When assessing the amount of shade in an area, the first step is to observe is anything is currently growing in that area. If there is not even a weed growing in the shaded area, chances are, turfgrass will not thrive there. There are other solutions for that dense shade, such as monkey grass, shade-loving shrubs and perennials, and mulch. Alternatively, trees can be limed up to allow more sunlight to reach the grassy lawn below. Cultural practices such as allowing the grass to grow a little longer than usual are explained in Super-Sod's video.

Now, renovations and upgrades represent a turning point in its lengthy history, and a chance for it to continue to serve residents and visitors alike for years down the road.

A $1 million project, funded largely by grants, has given the boardwalk wider paths, lighting, ADA accessible access points, gazebos, benches, swinging seats, new landscaping and more.

The town is hosting a grand-opening ceremony at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the boardwalk to show off its new features.

Honestly, I think it gives it a complete refresher, you know, a facelift, said Town Manager Michael Cramer. The boardwalk's always been an icon down here.

It gives people a chance to walk along the area and look at the ocean, which Olde Salty owner Brenda Armes calls a phenomenal feat.

Facelift

The old boardwalk was fine, said Daniel Norris, author of multiple books about the history of Carolina Beach and boardwalk staple Britt's Donuts. But something newer and bigger is definitely a better thing.

The improvements are broken into three pieces: the wooden boardwalk, the concrete boardwalk and the road improvements, Cramer said.
