Michael Overall: Mixed feelings about Trader Joes coming to Tulsa

Demolition crews on Wednesday began clearing the Peoria Avenue site on which Trader Joes will be built, and the propertys owner said Tulsans can expect to see the specialty supermarket up and running by fall.

Trader Joes hopes to be open before Thanksgiving, said Phillip Allen with Venture Properties.

Wrecking crews from Ark Wrecking began at 8 a.m. knocking down vacant buildings between 37th Street and 37th Place along Peoria Avenue.

The demolition is expected to take a week.

It took 30 minutes to tear down what took 50 years to build up, said Shelley Murphy, who watched the buildings come down with her dog, Daisy.

Murphy, who owns a small business with her husband, Gary, has lived in the Brookside neighborhood since 1979.

She said she moved to Tulsa from Dallas to escape the hustle and bustle, and now here it comes to her backyard.

I dont think Brookside is the place to put it, Murphy said of the Trader Joes.
