8 Steps to Feng Shui Your Bathroom | Care2 Healthy Living - July 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Erica Sofrina, author of Small Changes, Dynamic Results! Feng Shui for the Western World.

In many traditional Feng Shui books you will read that bathrooms are negative places that should be closed off and ignored. Part of the reason is that bathrooms used to be rather funky places- like out-houses, not anything like the beautiful spa-like bathrooms we enjoy in the west. My belief is that we should feel wonderful about every room in our home and make them inspiring places to be. Negative feelings about any part of it doesnt serve anyone.

One of the reasons bathrooms have gotten such a bad rap is because chi (energy) is akin to water which flows down and out pipes and drains. The goal of Feng Shui is to invite into our front door vibrant chi and encourage it to circulate evenly around the home. Drains and openings are areas where the chi can escape and bathrooms have lots of them.

On the next page, I will give you eight steps to create a wonderful, vibrant and uplifting bathroom that will rejuvenate your soul and support relaxation in the body.

How to Clean Carpet – Better Homes and Gardens - July 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Carpets warm a home by adding color, pattern, and texture. Regular vacuuming provides the first line of defense against dirt and grit that damages carpet fibers. But carpets also need regular cleaning to keep them looking their best. Plan to thoroughly clean your carpets every 12 to 18 months, more often in high-traffic areas. If you have light-color carpet and/or kids or pets, clean your carpets two or three times a year. Always follow the carpet manufacturer's cleaning guidelines.

Colorfast carpet will not bleed, fade, or change when you are cleaning it or removing stains. Whether or not it is colorfast may change the cleaning method or products you choose. Here's how to pretest your carpet to find out if it is colorfast.

Always protect your furniture, carpet padding, and subfloor when cleaning carpets. Grab a partner to help you remove furniture from the room where the carpet is being cleaned. Thoroughly vacuum the carpet. Use a rental cleaner -- if recommended by the carpet manufacturer -- or have it professionally cleaned. If you choose a wet extraction method (see below), make sure the carpet dries completely within 24 hours to prevent mold or mildew growth in the carpet or padding and to stop moisture from damaging the floor underneath.

If you have light-color carpets and/or a house full of kids or pets, you might want to buy your own professional-style model designed for home use. Home cleaners can save you money over the long haul when compared with hiring a pro several times a year. Keep in mind, though, that the unit you buy may not have the cleaning power that professional models do.

Most home carpet cleaning systems are waterextraction units that are also known as steam cleaners. They work by injecting a solution into the carpet pile, then pulling the dirty solution back into the machine. To avoid the hassle of dragging a hose around the house, opt for a model that does not require a clean-water hookup. Also, choose the most powerful machine you can afford to ease the burden of water extraction.

Caution: When using a steam cleaner, do not get the carpets overly wet. Overwetting can damage the carpet backing and underlayment, causing shrinkage, discoloration, and odor.

Other home cleaning systems use a dry extraction method. First you spread a dry absorbent compound over the carpet being cleaned, then you vacuum it with the cleaning machine. Although they usually work better than steam cleaners, dry machines and chemicals are more expensive than steamers and wet extraction solutions.

You may want to rent a professional-quality steam cleaner from a grocery store or rental center because of the additional power. With rental fees and the price of cleaning solutions (shampoo, defoamer, spot removers, odor removers, and more), a rental machine can quickly strain your household budget. But it may be a better value if your carpets don't show dirt, your kids are grown, or you don't own four-legged pets.

When you hire professionals, you'll get to choose between steam cleaning and dry extraction cleaning. Each method -- if handled by a qualified pro -- will do wonders for dirty carpets. Not only do professionals have far more powerful equipment than you're likely to buy or rent, they have far more experience removing stains. Prices may vary widely for essentially the same service, so shop carefully.

How to Clean Old Stained Carpet Naturally | Home Guides | SF Gate - July 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Distilled white vinegar works as a natural stain remover on carpets.

No matter how clean you keep your home, old carpets accumulate stains and appear dingy. Regular cleaning brightens the carpet and removes the stains. While many carpet cleaning solutions and stain removers contain harsh chemicals and emit strong odors, a few common household products can clean your carpets effectively. You can make homemade cleaners odorless if you have sensitivities to strong scents or add some natural scents for an extra clean smell. As an additional benefit, you can save money by making your own homemade carpet cleaners.

Sweep your carpet with a broom to lift the fibers and remove loose dirt. Vacuum the entire carpet. (See References 2)

Mix one part borax with two parts cornmeal to make a carpet powder that removes stains, prevents mold growth and deodorizes. Alternately, for carpets with heavy odors, use baking soda. (See References 1 and 2)

Sprinkle the mixture over the entire carpet. Wait for about an hour and then vacuum the carpet. This should remove odor, light stains and dirt that normal vacuuming misses. (See References 1 and 2)

Pre-treat any remaining stains with a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water. For tough stains on light colored carpets, try a mixture of lemon juice and salt. First test any stain-removing mix, especially on darker carpets, in a hidden location, such as a closet. (See References 1)

Scrub the stain with the stain-removing mixture and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Use an old towel to dab up as much of the moisture as possible.

Rent a carpet-cleaning machine if you do not have one. Use very hot water to remove dirt and stains more effectively.

Fill the soap reservoir with a natural carpet cleaning solution. If you use your own carpet cleaner and it doesn't void the warranty, you can use a natural laundry detergent in place of carpet cleaner. If you don't want to use any detergent, the hot water alone will remove much of the accumulated grime.

Clean the entire carpet one time with the cleaner following the manufacturer's instructions. Run the carpet cleaner over the carpet once more with just hot water to rinse any detergent residue. Make a third pass without spraying any water or detergent to suck up as much moisture as you can.
