Door-to-door roofing solicitor shot outside Frisco home – WFAA - April 6, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Frisco man accused of shooting contractor

    WFAA 6:36 AM. CDT April 05, 2017

    Photo: Frisco PD

FRISCO -- A 44-year-old door-to-door roofing solicitor was shot outside a Frisco home Monday afternoon.

Officers were called to a house in the 6000 block of Larkspur Lane where they took a 45-year-old adult male shooter into custody without incident. The shooter has been identified as Radu Chivu from Frisco.

A preliminary investigation by detectives says that the Chivu confronted the victim outside his home. A no soliciting sign was observed outside of the Chivu's home during the initial investigation.

Ginny Schwartz is still in shock. She was on her way out Monday afternoon when she saw Frisco Police up the street. Its a little bit scary, she said. Just really, really, sad.

The 44-year-old man who was shot was taken to an undisclosed hospital. Frisco police have also yet to release his name. According to police, the victim did not have a permit from the city as one is not currently required to distribute commercial handbills.

Immediately I thought, That poor man. It has to be that same man because I didnt see anybody else come around, she said.

Ginny Schwartzs husband, Jonathan, was also home at the time of the shooting. Coming from Brooklyn and living in Texas now, even that was shocking, he said.

Although neither heard or saw the shooting, the couple said there has been an uptick in solicitations following the recent severe weather.

Were getting 6 phone calls a day it feels like, different people wanting to come up, check the roof, couple people knocking on the door, Jonathan Schwartz said. This gentleman does have signs all over the place, no trespassing on both sides, no soliciting, he doesnt want to be bothered.

Chivu is currently being held in the Frisco Jail and is being charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

There is no threat to public safety at this time and detectives continue to investigate the cause of the shooting.

There are several no trespassing signs and a no soliciting sign outside the shooters home. No one came to the door when WFAA knocked.

Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Frisco Police Department at (972) 292-6010 referencing CS# 17031331. They can also send an anonymous tip by texting FRISCOPD and the tip to 847411 (tip411).

    Krumm Siding & Roofing relocates to Hwy 64 – Richmond-News - April 6, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

"We've had to hire more salespeople and staff, so we outgrew our office at home," Mike said. "Overall, it has been nice to not be at work all the time, since our old office was in the basement of our home. And the new sign is really nice for people to be able to drive by and see that."

Krumm Siding, which is a U.S. Seamless Steel franchise and a Leafaway dealer, services roughly a 30-40 mile radius around New Richmond.

"We don't do a lot of new construction stuff, but we are seeing an increase in people who want additions done after they have been living in their homes for the last 20 years or so," Mike said. "There are quite a few people who are wanting to make changes to their homes or upgrading them."

The Krumms have owned the property where their new office is located for the last three or four years with the intentions of moving their business offices out of their home in the near future.

"After 20 years of business, our customers are becoming repeat customers and their kids are getting to an age where they might need work done on their homes as well," Cheryl said.

In addition to offering services for siding, windows, roofing, gutters and Leafaway, Krumm Siding & Roofing now also offers construction work such as decks, additions, kitchens, bathrooms and other renovation services for interior projects.

"We started adding those other services because past customers called us and wanted to see if we could do those things for them," Mike said. "They would ask if we can side their house and also do this other thing. We hired Carl Kopp as our project manager and estimator, who must have 30 years of experience in the construction industry. So it was a good fit.

"We've been so busy lately that we will probably have to hire more people this year to keep up with all the business we are doing."

For more information on the services Krumm Siding & Roofing offers, visit krummsidingandroofing.com, or call 715-246-6090

"Our slogan is 'we install peace of mind,' so we like to think by walking people through the process, telling them what to expect and by showing them exactly what their money is being spent on that they will know that we have spent their money wisely," Mike said. "They get what they pay for and then some. Referrals is a main part of our business, so we work hard to earn a referral."

New Asphalt Roofing EPDs Will Aid Green Building Projects – Facility Executive Magazine - April 6, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

When architects and specifiers embark on new green building initiatives, they need to validate the environmental aspects of the building materials they use. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are used to provide this information and to support the credibility of environmental claims.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) has completed a multi-year effort to develop EPDs for asphalt roofing systems. These five new documents provide information that building and construction professionals can use both to support environmental aspects of roof systems as part of sustainable building projects and to better understand their impact over time. EPDs are now available for asphalt shingle roofing systems, SBS and APP modified bitumen systems, and built-up roofing systems.

ARMA worked with thinkstep, a sustainability consulting company, and with UL Environment to validate the EPDs. These comprehensive documents outline the environmental attributes associated with the manufacturing of various asphalt-related roofing materials.

ARMAs development of these five EPDs reflects the continued use and advancement of asphalt roofing materials. In some cases, these documents are needed to fulfill requirements for green building rating systems and initiatives such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Green Globes, and the International Green Construction Code (IgCC).

As the worldwide building and construction community continues to expand the focus on creating environmentally responsible and resource-efficient building projects, asphalt roofing has a critical role to play, said Reed Hitchcock, ARMAs executive vice president. ARMA is committed to supporting sustainable building initiatives, and we are proud to provide the industry with this important environmental information.

These EPDs will help architects and engineers make sustainable choices in roof design, said Amy Ferryman, chair of ARMAs Sustainability Task Force. Our work to develop these resources helps ensure that the asphalt roofing industry can fully participate in increasingly important green building practices.

The five EPDs from ARMA are now available and can be accessed on ARMAs website.

House-Senate panel seeking fresh insight into future of Docking – Topeka Capital Journal - April 6, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Kansas Legislatures committee that monitors state building projects Thursday accepted the offer of a private firm to tour Docking State Office Building and formulate cost estimates for renovating or re-purposing the Topeka building slated for demolition.

The administration of Gov. Sam Brownback has sought to take a wrecking ball to the tall office structure west of the Capitol after relocating hundreds of state employees to newly leased space in Topeka. That plan stalled when the 2016 Legislature compelled Brownback to sever a contract with a bank to finance construction of a $20 million heating and cooling plant to replace systems located in the basement of Docking.

The bipartisan Joint Committee on State Building Construction agreed to allow McGowan Gordon Construction, with offices in Manhattan and Kansas City, Mo., to tour Docking for the purpose of evaluating alternatives for the mothballed office building. The company offered to develop a report on possible uses of Docking at no cost to the state.

We require good information to make good decisions around here, said Rep. J.R. Claeys, a Salina Republican on the committee.

The Kansas Department of Administration was instructed by the joint committees chairman to cooperate with McGowan Gordon staff on a tour of Docking.

I hope you guys are on board to do that, said Rep. Adam Lusker, the Frontenac Democrat who chairs the committee.

Were certainly happy to give them a tour, said Sarah Shipman, secretary of the state Department of Administration.

The McGowan Gordon construction company was involved in the Flint Hills Discovery Center and the Kansas Department of Agriculture administration building, both in Manhattan; the KBI Forensic Science Center in Topeka; and the American Museum of Natural History at Prairiefire in Johnson County.

The House-Senate committee tentatively scheduled its own tour of Docking for April 26. There is an expectation lawmakers on the panel will review the construction firms findings later in the 2017 legislative session, said Sen. Laura Kelly, D-Topeka.

I feel, finally, the Legislature is taking some control of this project, Kelly said.

Sen. John Skubal, R-Overland Park, said he was curious if the committee would have interest in hiring a company to propose a design-build plan authored by a builder in conjunction with an architect. Renovation of Docking will be complex if it involves removal of several floors of Docking and retention of the heating-and-cooling infrastructure in the basement, he said.

This is going to be very, very complicated. I think that (design-build) delivery system for this building, as complicated as its going to be, may be something that we should investigate, he said.

Lusker said the committee could end up recommending a design-build approach, but input from McGowan Gordon staff appears to be a logical move.

This is a first step in a seemingly long process, the chairman said. After we get some findings back from the contractor, then maybe we can look at our other options if there are options for the building, which hopefully there will be.

was trying to circumvent legislative oversight.

Air Products: Construction of new Lehigh Valley headquarters on the table – Allentown Morning Call - April 6, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

TREXLERTOWN Air Products has told employees it is exploring opportunities for its corporate headquarters, including one scenario that would involve building a new base of operations elsewhere in the Lehigh Valley, within a "reasonable commuting distance" from the current campus.

That is one of four scenarios the industrial gases producer outlined to employees at a meeting Thursday morning, with the other three options involving renovation and modernization of its existing 235-acre campus in Trexlertown.

No matter what the company ultimately decides, CEO Seifi Ghasemi stressed the company is committed to keeping its headquarters, where approximately 2,000 people work, in the Lehigh Valley, spokesman Art George said. Ghasemi also told workers that he wants a main facility that reflects the "world-class company" that is Air Products, George said.

The company said it expects to make a final decision by the end of the year and for it to be a "multi-year process."

The company has hired an outside consultant to assess its options, which are:

Retain its existing Trexlertown campus and perform routine maintenance and necessary upgrades.

Significantly transform the main administrative buildings, gutting and rebuilding them from the ground floor. Consolidate and rebuild its industrial gases research and development facilities.

Completely demolish the existing administrative buildings and construct new office space and laboratories.

Build a new headquarters and lab facility elsewhere "within a reasonable commuting distance from its current campus" at 7201 Hamilton Blvd. The company would then explore a sale of the Trexlertown campus.

George said under the first three scenarios, there may be a reduction in the company's campus footprint. Some campus buildings are vacant, though George could not provide specifics on what percentage is unoccupied. The company said most of its headquarters facilities are more than 30 years old, outdated, and have increasing and costly maintenance requirements.

Air Products' sprawling headquarters, reminiscent of a university campus or a center for research, was first constructed in the mid-1950s, about 15 years after the company was founded in Detroit by the late Leonard Parker Pool.

Through the decades, the headquarters emerged as a simple yet powerful symbol of corporate culture that also came to symbolize something else, namely the move of American business from the city to suburbs, according to the 1990 book "Out of Thin Air," which chronicles Air Products' first half-century.

As recently as June, Ghasemi publicly stated the company's commitment to the Valley, despite slashing hundreds of local jobs in a corporate-wide restructuring.

"We're not going anywhere," Ghasemi said, responding to a question about the company during a speech he gave to the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.

About 2,000 out of Air Products' 3,000 Lehigh Valley employees work at the headquarters, George said. The rest work at other company locations in Allentown, Bethelehem and elsewhere. The company is one of two Fortune 500 companies based in the Lehigh Valley, and is also one of the region's largest employers. The company employs about 16,000 people worldwide.

Tony Iannelli, the Chamber's president and CEO, said he believes Air Products will keep its word.

"Air Products feels the need to assess its physical plant," Iannelli said. "Like any internationally successful company, they could go anywhere in the world. They have chosen to make that commitment in the Lehigh Valley, and I applaud that."

Don Cunningham, president and CEO of the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation, said Air Products is evaluating real estate space options within the Lehigh Valley, but did not have any specific information on the company's plans.

Air Products has a presence in downtown Allentown, occupying the entire fourth floor of the Two City Center office building. If Air Products has designs on moving more employees downtown, there will be no shortage of office space to welcome them. City Center Corp. is building the 12-story Tower 6, due to open next year, and has another office tower called Five City Center on the drawing board.

City Center CEO J.B. Reilly said he has "not had talks"with Air Products to rent additional space.

Air Products also could consider relocating to the proposed Waterfront development along the Lehigh River. Mark Jaindl, a banker and developer who is one of the principals behind the Waterfront, declined comment.

Air Products' plans are in line with what other major companies are doing with their corporate headquarters, said John Boyd Jr. of the Boyd Co. Inc., a corporate site selection firm in Princeton, N.J. He said companies today want more collaborative, smaller work spaces, noting how the average square footage per worker has dipped to about 90 square feet vs. approximately 125 square feet 30 years ago.

Another factor, Boyd said, deals with companies' branding. "A company wants to position its headquarters to attract new talent and position it as a company looking forward toward the future," he said. He also pointed to Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America's consolidation into a new, modern regional office complex off Route 512 in Northampton County as an example.

The headquarters property also has three tenants, Intertek Group, an inspection, product testing and certification company based in London; Versum Materials, a spinoff company formed out of a division of Air Products last year; and Evonik Industries AG of Germany, which acquired Air Products' performance materials division in January.

Evonik employs about 200 employees, Versum has 158 employees, and Intertek employs 46 people at Air Products' headquarters. Last fall, Versum announced it was moving about three-dozen administrative employees to a neighboring business park, as it shifted its corporate headquarters to Tempe, Ariz.

Air Products ranks 288th on the latest Fortune 500 company list. Air Products stock closed at $135.18 Thursday, down 6 cents.
