Shooting victim says video brought back horrific memories – Myhorrynews - July 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

John Cox said watching the video of the Fathers Day shooting on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach brought flashbacks of a shooting that occurred a year ago almost to the daya shooting that nearly cost him his life.

Cox, 34, of Oxford, North Carolina was shot multiple times while attending the 2016 Carolina Country Music Festival.

Since then, hes warned family, friends and folks in and near his hometown about the dangers lurking along the Grand Strand.

He says hes glad the video of last months shooting garnered so much attention and hopes it will change things in Myrtle Beach and make it a safe destination again.

So why is he just now telling the world about his near-death experience a year ago?

People need to know whats been going on, he said. When I was lying in the intensive care unit at Grand Strand hospital, detectives told me not to tell anyone what had happened.

Cox, whos still feeling the effects of the attack that took place in the parking lot at the former Myrtle Square Mall site last year, recounted what went down the night of June 11, 2016.

My wife and I along with another couple were attending the country music festival, Cox said. My buddy and I went back to the parking lot to tailgate awhile while the ladies stayed at the concert.

The two friends were sitting in his buddys Chevrolet Tahoe when out of nowhere a black male wearing dark clothes and a mask came up to the drivers side and put a gun to his friends head and demanded money, Cox said.

Cox said they tried to explain they didnt have any money on them and the gunman seemed to get upset and fidgety.

I have a concealed weapons permit, he said I grabbed my sidearm and slipped out of the truck. But before I could chamber a bullet, he shot me twice in the chest and in the arm.

He was also shot in the abdomen and side and still has a bullet lodged inside him today.

Cox said he didnt see but one robber but figured there were two suspects since doctors told him they found two different types of bullets.

I was lying there, not knowing if he was going to come and finish me off, Cox said. The bullet in my arm hit an artery and the blood spurting out sounded like a sprinkler.

The would-be robber or robbers fled the scene and a nearby ex-Marine rushed over to help stop the bleeding until police and an ambulance arrived.

That guy saved my life and I have to say the police got there pretty quickly, he said.

In the ride to the hospital, Cox groggily realized hed also been hit in the side. The next thing he remembered was waking up in the intensive care unit where he stayed for 11 days.

His friend had been shot, also, but his wounds werent as serious and he was released from the hospital a short time later.

During his stint in the ICU, Cox said investigators told him not to discuss the incident with the press or on social media.

They said the shooters might be part of a gang and might come hunt me down, Cox said. I told them I wished they would.

Later, Cox said the detectives told him the robbers were inlanders, people who lived away from the beach but came to town to rob people then go back home.

They told me theres a less than 10 percent chance of ever catching who shot me, he said.

Myrtle Beach police spokesman Lt. Joey Crosby said the investigation is ongoing but the suspects havent been found yet.

Cox was out of work for eight months and because the damage to his right arm was so severe, he couldnt lift heavy equipment and had to give up his business of carpet cleaning.

Even today, the simple act of writing is a labored task.

This year, the city brought in extra law enforcement officers from outside agencies to help local police during the weekend of the Carolina Country Music Festival.

Following the Fathers Day incident and other shootings, the city has initiated stronger security for the Ocean Boulevard area with extra outside law enforcement officers and barricades lining much of the boulevard to keep pedestrians out of the street.

Ive been telling people that I know, for a year now, not to go to Myrtle Beach because it was too dangerous, he said. I told my story on a local radio station, too.

But he hadnt put his story on widespread social media or wanted to tell everyone about it until he saw the Facebook video of the shooting that happened on the corner of Ocean Boulevard and Fourth Avenue North in the early morning hours of Fathers Day last month.

I knew then, they couldnt keep things like this quiet any longer, he said. I truly hope they clean the city up and make it a safe and fun place to visit again.

On the Market: Updated 1930s architecture in Brooklawn

FAIRFIELD The classic colonial house that was built in 1938 at 165 White Oak Road has stood the test of time. Its original living space was enlarged through the decades to its current 4,549 square feet to accommodate the needs of modern families.

When one large two-story addition was constructed in 1989 the design included a modernized floor plan. But even as the house was given an open flow there are also defined rooms that can be closed off for privacy. Thats a great feature for entertaining because certain rooms or even whole areas of the house can be opened or made off limits depending on the number of guests.

The house also blends classic architectural features of the 1930s with renovations suitable for todays lifestyle. Among the homes many updated features are the renovation and winterization of the sunroom in 1991 and a major kitchen renovation and expansion in 2012. That same year all the hardwood floors were refinished and the lower level exercise room was also completed.

In 2013 a whole house generator was installed and the driveway was repaved and given a border - the first half is bordered by a low fieldstone wall and the portion closer to the house is lined in Belgium block. A flagstone path and stairs lead to the covered front entrance, where the door is flanked by sidelights.

This gray shingle house with black shutters sits on a level and gently sloping property of three quarters of an acre and it is located in the quiet Brooklawn neighborhood with views of the private Brooklawn Country Club and golf course. Fairfield Warde High School is within easy walking distance.

Inside, to the right of the foyer is a study with grass cloth wall covering, a wall of built-in shelving, and French doors for privacy. Step down from the other side of the foyer into the formal living room, which has a wood-burning fireplace with built-in cabinetry on either side. There is also a bay window and French doors that lead into the sunroom, which has a hardwood radiant heated floor, ceiling fan, and French doors topped with an arched transom that access the front yard.

A door at the back of the living room leads into the breakfast room, which has a built-in window seat and two china cabinets. The kitchen has gray marble counters, a long center island, multi-colored earth tone mosaic tile backsplash, glass-front custom cabinetry, built-in wine rack, and high-end appliances including a GE Monogram range top and Sub-Zero refrigerator. Off the kitchen is the two-story sizable addition that includes the formal dining room and first floor master bedroom suite.

The dining room has a red brick floor-to-ceiling fireplace, colonial blue-colored wainscoting on the lower walls, on the exposed ceiling beams and the woodwork. There is a built-in corner china cabinet, a half bath with a marble floor, and a door to a small raised bluestone patio/balcony. In the back hall there is a rear staircase to the second floor family room, a door to a wood deck, a laundry room with a sink, an office with wall-to-wall carpeting and a bay window, and access to the three-car attached garage has a tile floor.

The spacious master suite has a tall cathedral ceiling with trestle beams, a red brick fireplace, three closets - two of them walk-in, a ceiling fan, and a door to the deck. The master bath has a marble radiant heated floor with a decorative basket-weave pattern in one area, a double marble vanity, shower, and large soaking tub.

Cass County brides say ‘yes’ to the dress – Fremont Tribune - July 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Cass County brides over the past 10 decades not only said yes to the dress before exchanging nuptial vows, but also agreed to display their or their relatives wedding gowns at the Bess Streeter Aldrich House throughout June.

We had 25 wedding dresses and wedding ensembles displayed, said Kurk Shrader, Executive Director of the Bess Streeter Aldrich Foundation. Fifteen different weddings were represented in the display with brides or family members of the brides from any of 11 communities.

In the Aldrich sunroom, Marge Clements of Lincoln showcased her wedding dress while Elmwoods Maechelle Clements had her beautiful gown in the living room.

Kami Voboril of Lincoln and her mother Sue Connor of Elmwood displayed their respective dresses in the dining room. Carol Bley of Murdock utilized the breakfast nook for a wonderful display of wedding cake toppers.

Aldrichs study proved a perfect place for bridal attire worn by Colleen Winter of Elmwood and her mother Naoma.

In the southeast bedroom of the house, Judy Hendrix of Murdock displayed dresses worn by her full wedding party.

In the northwest bedroom upstairs was a trio of beautiful bridal gowns worn by Sherri Wilson of Avoca, Coleen Shrader and Morgan Brunsting of Lincoln. In addition the flower girls dresses were displayed. The display represented three generations.

The wedding dress worn by Paula (Rueter) Trutna, Judy Hendrixs mother, was featured in the northeast bedroom. Trutna was married in the 1940s. Clara Steinhoffs dress from the 1940s was also displayed there. Steinhoffs dress was loaned by her daughter, Cindy Drake.

A 1910 wedding dress and wedding photo of Marylyn Timms grandmother of Murdock was displayed in the southeast bedroom.

In addition to the dresses and wedding toppers, Drake displayed vintage Nancy Ann and Madame Alexander wedding-related dolls.

Many people helped set up the displays for the showing. Dresses were displayed with the help of the people making the loan and Aldrich board members, Shrader said. A special thanks goes to Cindy Drake, who designed the bride doll exhibit, and Carol Bley, who created the cake topper display.

Shrader said more than 160 attended the bridal exhibit in June.

We currently have a Salute to Veterans exhibit with a tribute to Capt. Charles Aldrich, who served in the Spanish-American War, Shrader said. Also on display are uniforms and military items from 20 other local veterans from many other wars and conflicts.

Allen City Council approves construction of more apartments – Star Local Media - July 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

A major apartment complex development has been given the OK by the Allen City Council.

Davis at Montgomery Ridge, a multi-story, two-phase project, was approved on Tuesday by the council at their regularly scheduled meeting.

The urban residential development will occupy a little more than 10 acres off Montgomery Boulevard, south of Bethany Drive and west of U.S. Highway 75.

According to Gene Babb with Davis Development, the project will be built in two phases. Phase one will consist of 363 units in a 4-5 story apartment building of about 503,000 square feet. Phase two will see the construction of a second residential 4-5 story building with 252 units occupying about 344,000 square feet.

The complex will offer apartments in one, two and three bedroom sizes. In the east side building one, one-bedroom units will account for 58 percent of available options, two-bedroom units will make up 39 percent and three-bedroom apartments will comprise 3 percent. Building two will consist of 60 percent one-bedroom units, 37 percent two-bedroom units and 3 percent three-bedroom units.

Parking garages will complement each building. The buildings will be a wrapped product in the style of recently approved Luxe Allen and Vera Watters Creek apartments. Davis Development was also behind those two complexes.

In what will be a first for urban living in Allen, Davis at Montgomery Ridge will have rooftop swimming pools and recreation areas atop its parking garages complete with cabanas, lounge chairs and seating areas. The complex will also feature open space with amenities including fire pits, grilling areas and outdoor dining areas, though these will be ground-level and not rooftop.

Staff believes that this area is suitable for an urban residential product, said Mahuri Mohan, city senior planner. The area is a good continuation from Watters Creek, and we believe that the density really flows in this area and makes sense.

Councilmen Joey Herald and Carl Clemencich were not in love with the privacy concerns a five-story building could present when single-family homes are built in the near future in the nearby neighborhood.

If [Davis Development] were putting it in the middle of their development, Id go, Whatever you want to do. Youre changing the value of the land surrounding you, Herald said, but now youre changing the value of the land you dont own.

I have a problem with a five-story structure right there when the land use to the north hasnt been defined, Clemencich added.

Though he ultimately voted in favor of the project, Councilman Baine Brooks said he was wary of the approximately 61 students a housing development like this could add to the student population of the Allen school district.

To keep the one high school theme that we have, I just think we need to be careful on these percentages were putting in these schools, he said. We dont want to see portables. Were already building satellites and things of that nature.

Mohan also noted that the school district sat in on pre-construction meetings with city staff and the developer and expressed some concern regarding school capacity at all grade levels.

Urban residential living is the way of the future, Councilman Kurt Kizer said.

I never would have thought it, but the idea of not having my house and not paying what I am and having one or two bedrooms is a lot more appealing than I ever thought it would be, he said. I do kind of see that this is the way things are moving. Lets try to make them as good a product as possible.

Kizer, Brooks, Mayor Stephen Terrell and Mayor Pro Tem Gary Caplinger voted in favor while Herald and Clemencich voted against the project. The Planning and Zoning Commission approved the development at their June 20 meeting. City staff also recommended approval.

No residents came forward during the public hearing portion of the meeting.

Sundance Ridge, Mill at Riverstone poised for home-buying perfection – Kansas City Star - July 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

The long wait has finally paid off: Rodrock Developments two newest Overland Park communitiesSundance Ridge and The Mill at Riverstoneare finally open! Both developments are primed to stun homebuyers not only with their gorgeous plots of land and unsurpassed amenities, but also the distinctive, quality homes planned.

Located at 175th Street, east of Mission Road to State Line, Sundance Ridge is comprised of Big Sky, Red Fox Run, and Archers Landing. The community is carved out of rolling acreage, winding creeks, and mature trees.

The team at Rodrock Development has planned an array of jaw-dropping amenities. A stunning entry monument will include $1 million worth of fountains and bronze wildlife statues, as well a stone pillars and decorative fencing.

A 4,000-square-foot ski-lodge-styled clubhouse will offer conference rooms, a stately fireplace and bar, and a common area overlooking a beautiful valley. An indoor gymnasium (with a seating capacity for 300 and stage for community events), workout facilities, indoor track, basketball court, climbing wall, and spa will complete this outstanding compound.

Jeff Ashner with Ashner Construction is proud to be building this one-of-a-kind clubhouse. Darol has a vision for this center to be the heart of the community, Jeff says. Its a place for people to gather and socialize, drawing the neighborhood together. He sees it as a comfortable environment with casual, warm materials, including stone, rich woods, and log and timber details. The clubhouse will make you feel like youre on vacation in your own community.

Ashner Construction hopes to begin construction in spring of 2018 on the clubhouse and will also feature a home on the 2018 Artisan Tour in the Big Sky neighborhood.

Whats more, a total of three poolsincluding an Olympic-sized and a zero-entry pool with splash pads and fountainsand playgrounds, picnic areas, and some 3 1/2 miles of paved trails make the most of this beautiful piece of land. A greenhouse will enable homeowners to grow their own produce, while a campground for children will provide hours of fun and adventure.

A sales trailer is due onsite in early July, and model homes in Archers Landing are already underway, including reverse-1 1/2-story homes by Hilmann Home Building and First Choice Custom Homes, 1 1/2-story homes by JS Robinson, Rob Washam, and James Engle Custom Homes, and a 2-story plan by Tabernacle Homes. Anticipated price points range between $450,000 and $600,000.

Darol has painstakingly planned a destination like no other, says Brenda Sanders, President of Rodrock & Associates, Realtors. This is a development that will forever change how people view residential real-estate developments. Not only are builders clamoring to be a part of this community, the Blue Valley School District has plans for a state-of-the-art elementary school within the neighborhood!

Only a few miles away, progress churns out at the picturesque Mill at Riverstone. Perfectly positioned at 183rd and Quivira, the neighborhood is primed to become one of the busiest new-home developments in Overland Park.

The first phase of this gorgeous community opened to considerable fanfare, says Brenda Sanders, President of Rodrock & Associates, Realtors. With some 200 home sites, The Mill at Riverstone offers some beautiful walk-out lots along city park ground. The serenity and privacy offered by such green space is a rare findin particular in the Blue Valley School District.

Featured builders Hilmann Home Building, James Engle Custom Homes, KC Builders & Design, and BCI Bowen Custom Homes are well underway on their newest model-home creations, Brenda adds. Landscaping and the entry monument are complete, and the community has enjoyed its first sales and lot holds.

The developments models will include several reverse plans, as well as a 1 1/2-story build, all of which are slated for completion by the Fall Parade of Homes, which runs from September 24th through October 9th.

Forty-one lots are available in the first phase, with a variety of home sites, including level, daylight, and walkouts priced, on average, at $105,900. The Mill at Riverstone will boast 1 1/2-story, reverse, and 2-story plans, with prices ranging from $450,000 to the mid-$500,000.

The second phase will include a child-friendly zero-entry pool, cabanas, playground, picnic areas, and paved trails. And the Mill of Riverstone will have a truly unique clubhouse, as it will have the appearance of an old mill (staying true to the developments name), complete with running water and pond.

Both the Mill at Riverstone and Sundance Ridge are the answer to the discerning homebuyers search. Rodrock Development invites you out to see these incredible communitiesbefore such rare opportunities slip by!

Eden In Miami: Find Out Why Living In Miami Just Got Better – Yeshiva World News - July 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (COMMUNICATED CONTENT)

    By Mimi Minsky

A popular Mecca drawing thousands of tourists year-round, Miamis hottest new project is a vacationers dream and could be your new reality.

Nestled in the heart of Miami, in one of the most exciting and sophisticated neighborhoods in South Florida, Change is on its way on Collins Avenue in Surfside, as a brand-new set of residences is being built from the ground up. Its unlike any other of the neighboring Condominiums. In fact, this building may be even better and more luxurious. And trust me, with these upscale, not-so-average townhouses, youll want your own key.

Located across from a lazy blue ocean and overtaking an entire block in beautiful Surfside, nearby the newly completed Fendi Chateau and Four Seasons, a brand new luxurious structure is being created that will unveil 68 exclusive duplexes. Completely unique, the Eden Residences has already gained tremendous interest and is selling quickly.

The Eden Residences a different kind of place for living and a welcome change from the typical Miami vacation scene. Set to be artfully designed for the discerning, very-Orthodox client in mind, no detail will be overlooked and no expense will be spared, to ensure each townhouse is the best and most comfortable for every client. An opportunity to own a piece of Miami in the center of the action, the Eden Residences will be the first of its kind to offer the ultra-Orthodox an entirely unique way to experience Miami at a higher standard.

Beginning at 1,500 square feet, with the largest unit reaching a sprawling 3,300 square feet, these spacious duplexes will feel more like private homes, than regular Florida condos. Built to accommodate a growing family, smaller duplexes have two bedrooms, while the largest can house up to five bedrooms, an oversized master, with each bedroom including its own en suite bathroom with double sinks. Perfect for friends and visits from extended family, your guests will never want to go back home.

On the lower level, an ample living room area along with a powder room lead into the kitchen. High-end finishes and glossy marble countertops, along with a useful marble island, enhance the comfort and convenience of the space intended to remove the common one-sink handicap of a conventional condominium. This kitchen is equipped with two sinks, two ovens, two cooktops, featuring Wolf Subzero appliances, Kohler fixtures, all in shiny stainless steel. Contemporary and airy, this kitchen is the perfect gathering place for family and friends. Cooking is made simple at the Eden Residences and preparing meals for a large family or crowd during Yom Tov is easy.

And you may even want to take the cooking outside. While each unit will feature two levels of indoor living space, 200-1800 square feet of front or rooftop gardens, will also serve as outdoor entertaining space with open grilling areas for owners to enjoy. A porch large enough to accommodate a sukkah during sukkot has been designed to ensure owners can spend as much time as possible in their new homes. Holidays are more joyful and relaxed at Eden, under blue skies and bright days.

And of course, no trip to Miami is complete without time spent at the pool. From the comfort of the cabanas, visitors will have the opportunity to visit one of two gorgeous private pools, built to accommodate both men and women for separate swimming, and will provide a unique level of comfort and beauty catered specifically for a crowd practicing a higher level of observance.

Shabbos is well-spent at Eden with two nearby shuls of different affiliations located within walking distance, while the residences will also hold a large event space with a retractable mechitzah perfect for parties and private affairs. A beautiful gated park equipped with a full playground will be built and wonderful for kids to play in on any day at home, after swimming or before breakfast. Two modern and updated fitness centers will be located on the first floor of the property and both men and women can easily visit the private gym spaces on their own time.

Amenities at Eden Residence surpass that of other buildings nearby, as it is divided in the kind of lifestyle it provides for the sophisticated Orthodox crowd. In fact, you may never want to leave. Yet, venturing out is nearly as fun as staying in and only blocks away from a variety of delicious glatt kosher restaurants, large well-stocked kosher supermarket, famous upscale Bal Harbour Shops, Eden is at the center of it all.

A perfect day at Eden is breakfast on the porch, swimming at one of the beautiful private pools, an afternoon stroll toward the shops, followed by an elegant dinner out or in your very own gourmet kitchen.

A few years ago, this Miami vacation seemed impossible. Today, its slowly becoming a reality and the kind of lifestyle that you deserve Eden living.

The Eden Residences sales center is located at 9380 Collins Avenue and open to visitors. You can reach the center at: (305) 787-3996 and visit their website at TheEdenResidences.com.

Wattstopper Outdoor Sensors to Support Philips Lighting SR Platform – Audio Visual News Network - July 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Legrand North and Central America has announced the development of new Wattstopper FDP-300 Series sensors. The sensors, which will launch under Legrands Eliot program, will be the first in the market to add occupancy detection to a connected outdoor fixture. Specifically engineered for OEM use, these digital sensors will offer multi-level control based on motion and/or daylight contribution and designed to share information to and from peripheral devices, including wireless nodes and digital LED drivers such as Philips Xitanium SR drivers. Legrand is part of Philips Lighting SR (System Ready) Certified Program and the FDP-300 Series sensors will be the first products being developed as part of this partnership.

Outdoor lighting systems are experiencing a market shift from analog to digital sensors and network controlled solutions. This shift to connected lighting and intelligent controls is driven by emerging technologies such as LEDs and initiatives like the Internet of Things (IoT). These sensors enable connected intelligent lighting for outdoor spaces and allow substantial energy and maintenance cost savings.

As part of an outdoor lighting solution, FDP-300 Series sensors will help facility engineers and city managers to monitor, control, commission, and diagnose outdoor lighting while maximizing safety and security. Ideal for street lighting applications, commercial site lighting, and parking lots in commercial and city spaces, the sensors will feature robust SR functionality.

The FDP-300 Series will come in multiple mounting options to fit with a variety of luminaires. They are IP66 and IK08 rated for the highest protection against water, dust, and other non-corrosive material, as well as against external mechanical impacts, and are code compliant with latest ASHRAE 90.1/ IECC and California Title 24 outdoor lighting control requirements.

    Legrand Eliot Program

The Wattstopper FDP-300 Series digital fixture integrated outdoor sensors tie to the larger context of Legrands Eliot (Electricity + IoT) program. Eliot is a global Legrand IoT program that aims to advance connectivity and intelligence in the built environment, mobilize Legrands capabilities around the world, and speed development of Legrand connected devices wherever the Internet of Things can enhance value for all users.
