INSTALL Adds Six New Members – Floor Focus - August 12, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Glassboro, NJ, August 10, 2017-INSTALL, the International Standards and Training Alliance works with mills, has added six new members, toward its effort to combat the labor shortage through the cultivation of industry partnerships.

The highest level of certification within the INSTALL program is to attain INSTALL Warranty Contractor (IWC) status. Each of these contractors must be nominated and complete a rigorous review to achieve this status. Four new companies now carry the INSTALL Warranty on Labor which provides an additional, extended, free, non-proprietary and third-party installation warranty of $25,000 and two years: United Installation Services, located in Plymouth, Minnesota; St. Paul Linoleum & Carpet Co. of Eagan, Minnesota; CFS Interiors & Flooring of Eagan, Minnesota; and William Reichenbach Co. of Okemos, Michigan.

Since the inception of the INSTALL Warranty Program in June 2013, INSTALL has underwritten approximately $250 million in flooring installations without a single claim filed, making an IWC the go-to choice for commercial flooring projects. Each IWC maintains the integrity of every design because of superior training and certification.

Alliance partners participate in ongoing curriculum reviews and work with INSTALL instructors to revise and refine the curriculum to meet manufacturer standards. INSTALL is currently partnered with more than 100 major mills and manufacturers.

New Alliances partners include USG Performance Flooring of Chicago, Illinois and Niagara Machine, Inc.

Itumeleng Letoane in the computer room in which he installed flooring at Sparrow FET College.

Itumeleng Letoane has come a long way since he was a student at Sparrow FET College in Sophiatown.

The former student continues to climb the entrepreneurial ladder of success with the opportunities he has been given. The former security guard pursued other opportunities after being in his profession for eight years. He then decided to search for institutions which offered learnerships he could qualify for.

Itumeleng Letoane sits in front of the classroom where he completed his course.

Letoane said when he initially decided to apply at the college, he knew nothing about floor laying until he did research on the course and industry. His passion for flooring was ignited from there onwards.

In 2015 he completed a one-year course in Installation of Floor Coverings at the college and also graduated in the same year.

The course was divided into six months of theory, then six months of practical work. This course has opened a number of doors I now have my own business, said Letoane.

The colleges operations manager Melanie Malema was my first mentor and gave me my first job to install flooring at a childrens home. She is the one who believed in me throughout the process.

Sparrow Schools general manger Jackie Gallagher and Itumeleng Letoane at Sparrow Schools head office.

He added that all the opportunities and the support of staff members at the college were made possible through his mentor.

Since the beginning of his journey, hes completed a number of projects around Johannesburg. Letoanes most notable project was the opportunity to install flooring at the college and at Sparrow Schools head office.

I installed laminated wood in the staff rooms at the college and at the head office. I also installed flooring in some of the classrooms, said Letoane.

Sparrow Schools general manager, Jackie Gallagher said she has been mentoring Itumeleng since he started growing his business.

Hes got commitment, passion and drive. When he is mentored, he takes what you say seriously and puts it into practice. We all want him to succeed and be successful.

The talented floor layer encourages readers to support students like himself and give them an opportunity to grow.

    Match wall colour to furnishings

I have had white and beige walls for a long time. I would like to try more colour, but I am not sure how. Any advice?

The first thing to do is not to use a paint chart immediately.

Ask yourself if you are keeping any existing furniture or curtains. The colour you select has to be viewed against the pieces you are retaining.

If you want a total revamp, start with what inspires you and look for images - not just of interiors, but also those that evoke a certain mood or ambience. Use these images as the base for a mood board and add the other elements of the room: furniture, lights, soft furnishings, art and accessories.

Also, consider your floor colour as it is the second largest surface to the walls. Wood or wood-look floors have a shade, whether it is yellowish in bamboo, grey in limed or distressed wood or reddish in teak parquet.

Certain colours are associated with particular moods. Hues commonly found in nature, such as blues and greens, are calming and suitable for most rooms, while yellow and orange are energetic and a good option for the kitchen.

Then arm yourself with a paint chart and pick a few suitable colours.

Buy a sample portion of paint because a paint chart will not give you a good idea of how a whole wall will look. Instead of painting on the wall, paint an A4-size cardboard and hold it up against the wall. This lets you try out hues without the hassle of covering them up later. Make sure you look at the colours in daylight and under lighting.

What can I do if I want to change my flooring to carpet? Do I have to remove what is underneath?

Wall-to-wall carpeting is not common in Singapore homes, says Mr Melvyn Khong of The Rug Maker.

When it is done, it is usually in home theatres for its sound insulation properties. In this case, an underlay is a must.

He recommends removing the parquet, laminate or tiles first. But this can be a costly procedure, so carpet can also be installed over an existing floor with or without an underlay.

"However, when this is done, you would most likely have to shave your doors to ensure you have the space to open them.

"If you glue down carpets that are 4mm to 6mm thick, you should not face any problems with the door. But such carpets are usually for commercial spaces and provide little comfort for the feet," he says.

Also, expect some damage to the existing floor, regardless of the installation method.

Proper installation is the key to carpeting that keeps its shape over the years. There are two methods: Underlay with gripper rods and the glue-down technique.

One of the steps in the first method is to stretch and cut the carpet to fit the room. "You will need to stretch the carpet to a good tension to prevent any warping over time with foot traffic. If the carpet is not stretched well, the edges may flip up," he says.

With the second method, the floor has to be clean and relatively dust-free before the glue is applied to the entire area. "This is to ensure that the carpet does not warp and form bubbles over time."

I am renovating my Housing Board flat and plan to install a rainshower. But I am worried the water pressure will not be strong enough. What do you suggest?

Start by engaging a certified plumber to measure the water pressure in each bathroom. Wear and tear, air locked in pipes, choking and a malfunctioning booster pump all affect water pressure.

The responsibility of maintaining water pipes leading to a unit is divided among the town council, national water agency PUB and the flat owner. Go to http://www.tinyurl.com/ HDBpipes for details.

A spokesman for luxury sanitary fittings maker Hansgrohe says: "The optimal water pressure differs for different shower products, so it is important to share information about your site condition so the sales representativescan advise accordingly. As a guide, it is not recommended to install shower products with large shower faces or multiple functions for sites with weaker water pressure."

The type of water heater installed also plays a part, as handshowers that require high water pressure are not suitable for instant water heaters. For gas heaters, it is best you seek the advice of the supplier on the flow rate of the heater to determine which shower head to pick.

The parquet flooring in my bedroom is old and some strips have started coming loose due to water damage. Can I just glue them back or will they come loose again?

According to Mr Kelvin Tan of Maywell Lifestyles, which makes products from natural wood, properly maintained parquet floors can last up to 50 years.

Parquet strips are laid in the tongue-and-groove method, which means one links to the next.

"If one strip comes out, the rest will follow," says Mr Tan, who has more than 20 years' experience working in wood repairs and restoration.

The most common reason for popping parquet is water damage. The majority of such instances occur just outside the master bathroom entrance.

Mr Tan puts it down to the accumulative effect of post-shower wet feet. "When I look below the loose parquet, I usually find rotting plywood, which is the base layer parquet is installed on."

Most contractors prefer to remove the entire flooring and install new parquet, which can be costly.

If the damage is limited to a small area - of about 3 sq ft - Mr Tan prefers to saw off the damaged pieces and plywood and replace the subfloor with marine plywood.

Though marine ply is the most expensive, it resists rotting, warping and shrinking, and repels moisture.

To ensure colour and grain matching, he reuses the old parquet and refinishes the floor.

A Woman Found a Secret Box from Chuck Palahniuk Hidden in Her Ceiling – VICE - August 10, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

A woman in Portland, Oregon, was having work done in her upstairs bathroom when she unearthed a secret box hidden by Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk, KPTV reports.

The current homeowner, Jolynn Winter, bought the house ten years ago from the authorbut didn't realize that the guy had stashed some goodies in the walls before he left.

Contractors were pulling down the bathroom ceiling when they came across the time capsule: a sealed backgammon game box filled with Palahniuk's photos, notes, and an autographed copy of Fight Club dedicated to whoever found the box in the future. It also included blueprints for the original remodel and some Bush-era newspaper clippings.

Winter posted photos of the find on Facebook, promising to "pay it forward." After making the discovery, Winter decided to place Palahniuk's box back up above the ceiling and added a few new contributions from her family for the next homeowners to find.

According to the letter, Palahniuk remodeled the house in 2002, adding the upstairs half-bath and slipping in his time capsule in the process.

"To whoever find this box," it reads, "here are a few gifts from us. We've lived in this house since March 1997 and placed this box during a bathroom remodeling in 2002... We hope you're as happy in this house as we've been. We've done our best to leave it much nicer than we found it."

Whoever winds up buying Chuck's current home down the line, get ready, because in all likelihood some nondescript wall hides a great treasurean autographed copy of his new adult coloring book.

What Is Feng Shui? – Real Simple - August 10, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

    What about the windows?

Dress them, but you don't need anything heavy. You can do sheers. No one wants to feel exposed here.

Where should guests sit?If you watch people walk into a waiting room or a restaurant, they choose a place where they feel safewith their backs to the wall. It's nice to let dinner guests sit with a wall behind them, as opposed to an open doorway or windows.

Any magic feng shui props for this spot?A nice, big mirror reflecting the table is said to double the abundance and bring good fortune.

Mirrors are significant in feng shui. Why?They can do all kinds of tricks, like recirculate energy and enhance natural light. They draw attention to what they reflect, so if a mirror has an unpleasant view, move it. Hang mirrors high enough that seated guests aren't stuck looking at themselves.

Let's move to the bedroom. Overall tips? It's best to have an interplay of masculine and feminine details.

What do you mean? For example, a bed that feels solid but sumptuous, maybe a wood bed frame that has an upholstered headboard. Or gorgeous silk drapes paired with a straight roman shade. This contrast ensures that the room feels balanced: energized yet restful.

Where should the bed go?Ideally, the head of the bed is on the wall farthest from the door but not directly across from it. Feet pointing directly out the door is known as the coffin position, because it's how the dead are removed in China. A sidewall is also OKbut no matter what, make sure you have a clear view of the door.

What if you're stuck with a layout that demands the coffin position? Yikes!Put a settee or a high bench at the end of the bed that's slightly taller than the mattress, or place an upholstered screen between the foot of the bed and the entry to shift the energy.

Can one side of the bed be against a wall? It's OK for kids. But for adults, leave space on both sides. Think about how both people feel in the room. Each should have adequate lighting and easy access to the bed without climbing over the other person. If you're single and looking for a partner, leaving space on both sides of the bed is energetically beneficial.

How do you get that calm, feng shui feel? It's a combination of safety, with an enveloping bed; coziness, with soft materials; and symmetry, with table lamps and nightstands that create a bookend effect. The bed feels like a little room within a room.

Smoke And MirrorsA fireplace sends energy out of a home; a mirror above the mantel bounces energy back in. Circles (here, on the mirror's frame), which have no beginning and no end, symbolize the flow of the universe. In feng shui, pairs (such as the vases and the dogs on the mantel) represent love and nurturing.

Safe HavenA feng shui'd bedroom feels comforting and secure. The bed is key: Here, the wings of the headboard "hug" the mattress. When your eye is drawn up, it's said to elevate your mood. So hang an overhead fixture that you love, paint the ceiling a calming color, or mount striking drapes up high.

Why Feng Shui is Pretentious BS in the Modern Age – NextShark - August 10, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

The other week, I visited a friends house for the first time in a while and at the center of the coffee table sat a seemingly-floating metallic orb cascading water down from a top hole into a shallow bowl.It made a horrific jack-hammering whir as it ran and there was no way to hide the ugly black cord leading to the outlet against the eggshell white wall. She said, This is my indoor cleansing fountain. What I saw was a fancy new drink station for her cat.

There have been many eye-roll moments Ive encountered on house tours over the years but the cringy-est moments are with White people who really try to make themselves look extra sophisticated and cultured. Like, I appreciate the offer, Carol, but Im just here to share chemistry homework with your daughter, I would really rather not smell your cherry blossom hand lotion that you secretly got from Bath & Body Works.

I have plenty of my own experience on what is Asian in a house. My eyes and nose are used to the burn of green medicated oil fumes. I can spot the small ancestor shrines by the burnt remains of incense sticks jutting out of a bowl of raw rice grains up on a shelf and pay my respects before making myself at home. I know the gold-on-red calendar with the big Chinese character LUCK is near the kitchen.

My White hosts that insist on dragging me through their personal museums try very hard to impress me with their exotic collectibles. I imagine these tours are also offered to White guests that enter the premises but often times I notice some extra side glances towards me, gauging my reaction to some ethnic knick knack, if Im impressed or have some story to share.

Here is my picture with some children I met on a mission in Indonesia!

This is my kabuki mask collection!

I got this ivory Buddha head on vacation in Thailand!

Sometimes it takes everything in me not to point out that its actually pretty fucking weird to display the decapitation of another cultures religious figure like a trophy, particularly on the counter of their bathroom where they are flashing it at least every day as they shower or use the toilet. And lord help me if they have a fake katana sitting on their mantle, then say theyve been studying bushido or something

But the ABSOLUTE worst offenders are always the ones that act super enlightened from attending yoga sessions thrice a week and reading a self-help book about positive vibes. Its more than just cool to them. They buy into that energy flow bullcrap and wikihow Feng Shui.

The thing is good old Feng Shui was about common sense. It wasnt based on some sort of ancient mystifying sorcery. The orientation of furniture wasnt fancy divination; it makes sense that an office desk facing the door is good for longevity if people arent getting spooked from behind every time a visitor comes in. Windows should face East because the sun rises and provides natural light instead of wasting candles, or in todays case, electricity. A mountain behind the house was for good foundation. Generous wealthy people built water wells out front and welcomed people to come have a drink and cool down.

So, when I walk up to a door way and theres a china pot on the porch and red tassels hanging from the frame, I steel myself to enter the domain of some real tryhards. Instead of the impression of worldly, I now see people with a tad too much money and a taste for the tacky. And if youre paying for Feng Shui consultations Youre being scammed, honey.

Scene stealer: Architect creates feng shui paradise perched above Pittwater – Domain News - August 10, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

Walking along the bridge that extends from the street to the oversize front doors of this impressive Pittwater pile gives you just enough time to draw breath for a grand exhale upon entry.

Even the most jaded of visitors would have to be wowed by the magnificent scope of the Pittwater views that are captured via glass windows and doors on a grand scale.

Facing north over Careel Bay towards Palm Beachs Snapperman Reserve and beyond to Lion Island and Gosford, the property is only two doors east of Stokes Point, home to Finisterre, the areas most expensive waterfront property.

Even the most jaded of visitors would have to be wowed by the magnificent Pittwater views at 6 Cabarita Road, Avalon Beach. Photo:Supplied

Architect Rosalie Stollery used feng shui principles when designing this waterfront residence in a bid to create a home where you feel relaxed, balanced and at peace, but with this kind of gobsmacking vista to process, the blood pressure can only go up.

Beyond the first encounter its easy to imagine living in a cocoon of contentment in a house where every room gazes over water.

Inspiration for the design came from the site itself, where water laps over sandstone shelves and against the sandstone sea wallArchitect Rosalie Stollery

Inspiration for the design came from the site itself, where water laps over sandstone shelves and against the sandstone sea wall, says Stollery in her project review.

The painstakingly detailed build by Peter Williams Constructions took several years to complete. Photo:Supplied

These elements have been borrowed and extended into the house, where water and sandstone are the two main elements. Ponds encircle the house, a huge wet-edge pool appears to flow into Pittwater and sandstone is used in a podium upon which the house sits.

The painstakingly detailed build by Peter Williams Constructions took several years and was completed in 2010, and its a testament to both Stollerys timeless design and the build quality that the home presents as beautifully as a brand-new property.

Inside, the finishes reveal the owners interest in textured design. Youll find silk panels on the walls of the main bedroom, a different choice of feature tiles in each of the bathrooms, Louis Poulson light fittings and linen curtains framing the large expanses of glass.

The residence faces north over Careel Bay towards Palm Beachs Snapperman Reserve. Photo:Supplied

New Guinea rosewood has been used extensively and the striking, single-stringer staircase showcases reclaimed timber from the Bundaberg Rum refinery.

The main living and dining zones each feature inlaid silk and wool rugs made in Nepal, one a scaled reflection of Careel Bay. The kitchen has Brazilian granite benchtops and a combination of Miele and Gaggenau appliances. A media room is fitted with a home cinema and theres an integrated surround system right through the house, plus a Control4 smart-home system.

Theres a large rumpus with kitchenette on the lower level, plus an adjoining multi-purpose room that could be used as a home gym, sewing room or study. Each of the four bedrooms on this level opens to the pool and garden.

The impressive outlook can be appreciated from a number of vantage points in the home. Photo:Supplied

The 22-metre lap pool was lined in black mosaic tiles so it would merge with, rather than float above, Pittwater.

There are plenty of outdoor areas to choose from across three levels of accommodation and at low tide you can enjoy your own sandy beach with a backdrop of native gardens.

Without a doubt this is the best, absolute deep-waterfront estate currently available on Pittwater, says agentLachlan Elder ofLJ Hooker Mona Vale, who is selling the home for $15 million. This feature is part of a Domain Deluxe package

Partaking in, and observing activities on Pittwater is the homes greatest asset. Boats come and go, seaplanes deliver diners to Jonahs, cement barges putter to Scotland Island, sailors race around the point.

Apart from birdsong, this non-intrusive ripple-riding rhythm is the only thing to break the silence. It is, in fact, ridiculously quiet when Domain makes a late morning visit, and its tempting to remove shoes and lower voices so as not to disturb the serenity.

Fittingly, the inclinator that runs from the carport to the waterfront doesnt whine and grind but instead emits only a gentle hum.

Alight on the lawn by the boatshed and discover a boaties paradise. The boatshed has a kitchenette but is otherwise still employed to house watercraft, rather than used as an additional living space.

The wharf juts out to a deepwater, floating pontoon with power and water and while not currently in use, the original slip rails have been retained should you need them.

The current owners have kept a 20.3-metre boat here and enjoyed countless hours on Pittwater.

Theres little doubt the new owners will be tempted to follow suit.

Feng Shui: Basic rules for home renovation – New Straits Times Online - August 10, 2017 by Mr HomeBuilder

WHEN it comes to home renovation, you want to get the maximum benefit for your money. That means hiring the right professionals for the job and using the best building materials.

But what about ensuring the right chi in your home? This is the practice of Feng Shui, and if applied properly, can positively influence your wealth, career, health and even your love life.

Feng Shui acts as a guide to create harmony and balance between the yin and yang, two energies with different properties. It is a complex practice, but it is always possible to renovate your home to stimulate positive chi without investing in bagua maps and Feng Shui compasses.

Here are some basic Feng Shui rules when doing home renovation:

    MAIN DOOR

As the main door serves as the main entry point of chi to your home, you should always avoid aligning your it with other doors (especially the back door) or windows. This is because chi needs to fill your home with nourishing energy, instead of flowing in and out hastily.

Also ensure that your door is sturdy and made from a strong hardware, and not rusty and breaking apart.

    KITCHEN

The kitchen is one of the three important pillars of a good Feng Shui at home (the bedroom and bathroom being the other two) because it is where nourishing food is prepared and cooked to provide energy for you and your family.

It also houses the five elements of Feng Shui Fire (stove), Water (sink and fridge), Wood (table), Earth (tiles) and Metal (metal handles, cooking equipment).

Avoid positioning your kitchen at the front of your house or close to the front door as this can signify eating and nutritional problems, while it also encourages guests to leave promptly after eating.

    BEDROOM

Master bedrooms should have enough sensual energy and be calming to promote sleep. Therefore, remove distractions like televisions, computers, exercise equipment, paperwork and clutter.

Bedrooms should be brightly-lit and have the right colours based on the bagua area and personal Feng Shui elements. For example, if you belong to the Wood element, it is best to avoid fiery colours like red and orange as they belong to the Fire element, and opt for blue and brown as they belong to the Water and Earth elements, respectively.

    BATHROOM

Bathrooms shouldnt be facing the kitchen or the front door as they are considered bad Feng Shui. To promote positive chi in bathrooms, keep them spotless and clutter-free. Also, take efforts to beautify their aesthetics, including adding aromatherapy essential oils and plants.

It is not always necessary to display Feng Shui items like Chinese coins, bells, dragon ships and crystal ball fountains. They may look out of place, especially if you want a modern-looking decor.

Instead, basic Feng Shui is all about setting up your home layout to improve the flow of chi. You can have a home with strong Feng Shui energy without sacrificing a modern design style. Most importantly, keep your home clean, use the right colours, and make sure that there is plenty of light in your house to help balance Feng Shui energy.

R&F coach Dragan Stojkovic told the club website: "After we changed the colour of our home stadium we got five wins and a high goal-scoring rate as well.

"I think this is what the fans want to see... beautiful offensive football."
