Its the time of year when homes are filled with beautiful and fun decorative lights but its also a dangerous time when fire hazards can threaten the holiday cheer. As the Valleys largest electric provider, Salt River Project is encouraging customers to stay safe this holiday season as they plug in holiday lights, surge protectors and extension cords.
Each year, hundreds of homes are damaged or destroyed by fires that start with overloaded circuits, Christmas trees or holiday lights, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
We cant stress enough the importance of making sure you dont overload outlets or extension cords. We also encourage customers to check holiday lights and power cords before plugging in to make sure they are in proper, working condition. The desert heat can do a lot of damage to these stored items throughout the year, said SRP Safety Connection specialist Regina Lane-Haycock.
Below are some safety tips to remember:
Dont overload outlets or extension cords.
Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, loose connections or frayed or bare wires. Discard all damaged cords.
Indoors or out, use only lights that have been tested for safety. The lights should have the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) label.
Uncoil extension cords completely before using, and be sure to place them away from heat sources and bulbs.
Unplug tree lights and decorative outdoor lighting before leaving the house or going to bed.
Indoor and outdoor automatic lighting timers can be used to ensure that lights are not left on by mistake.
Keep cords out of water and away from metal objects.

These high performance LED drivers and LED powers are designed by ShenZhen Yanshuoda Technology Co., Ltd to add a dimming effect to the light to enhance its energy efficiency.
Saving energy is a new mantra, and the world is well aware of the repercussion of using energy in an indiscriminate manner. While the LED has now replaced the traditional incandescent bulbs, companies are still searching for ways to make their LED lights more energy efficient for customers. LED lights with the dimming effect are the new invention that can help save energy. Such type of a light can sense the presence of humans in a space and can glow or dim as per the requirement. Thus, when someone is not around, the light can automatically reduce its intensity to save energy.
ShenZhen Yanshuoda Technology Co., Ltd has LED dimming drivers and power supplies in a variety of configurations. They have the LED dimmable driver 300W that can be used in both indoor and outdoor LED lighting applications. The driver can operate on a power range of 90V AC to 130V AC, and can easily convert the AC power to 12V DC. The driver comes with the IP20 waterproof rating and can be ideal for an underwater installation. The spokesperson of the company reveals that this driver can guarantee a stable performance in all types of environments. There is an aluminum alloy encapsulation for ensuring efficient heat dissipation, and which also adds to the products durability and performance.
For LED waterproof lights, the company supplies the LED Waterproof power 12v 600W. With the IP20 waterproof rating, the power supply can function at a significant power of 600W. According to the spokesperson, these are designed slim and compact, so that can easily be placed in lighting applications with a limited space for a driver or a power supply. The product is lightweight and requires an easy installation. The company manufacturers this 600W LED power supply, strictly in accordance with the international safety regulations. It comes with a fully aluminum encapsulated housing, and is hermetically sealed to maintain its longevity. The product is compatible with the universal range of power input and can be suitable to be used across geographies.
The spokesperson also talks about the LED dimming power 200W, which is another popular product in their portfolio. This product is now available on Amazon for retail buyers. The product comes with short-circuit, overload and over current protection, and can guarantee a long-lasting performance in both indoor and outdoor setups. The driver is designed to convert AC power into 12V DC power, and can be used in different types of LED lighting applications. The aluminum alloy enclosure of the power supply helps in an efficient heat dissipation.

"Illuminations: A Northern Lights Experience" lights up the Crystal Bridge Conservatory at the Myriad Botanical Gardens in 2018. The Myriad Gardens is bringing back the immersive, high-tech, nontraditional "Illuminations" light show for 2019 with a celestial theme inspired by Vincent van Gogh's famed painting "Starry Night." [Doug Hoke/The Oklahoman Archives]
Today's featured event:
Check out "Illuminations: Starry Starry Night," opening today through Jan. 5, at Myriad Botanical Gardens' Crystal Bridge Conservatory, 301 W Reno.
After a successful debut last year with a Northern Lights theme, the Myriad Gardens is bringing back the immersive, high-tech, nontraditional light show this year with a celestial theme inspired by Vincent van Gogh's famed painting "Starry Night."
"Illuminations" encompasses the entire Crystal Bridge, which serves as a canvas for moving light choreographed to music, inviting visitors inside for a curated, immersive light experience.
"Illuminations: Starry Starry Night" is designed to capture the unique lighting of a winter sky. Features this year include a lighted tunnel along the upper walkway of the Crystal Bridge and a special display in the area of the north side called the Oculus Room. Back for a second year will be the spinning hybycozo lamps. These geometric, iridescent sculptural lights cast out intricate shapes and shadows and are associated with Burning Man, the annual summertime community gathering in the Nevada desert.
Another highlight of "Illuminations" are the rare and beautiful plants inside the conservatory, as well as a 15-foot poinsettia tree, which will be lit with specialty lights, in the center of the bridge.
"Our 2020 'Illuminations' is meant to add some holiday magic to the downtown with a creative indoor light effects show that is unique and engaging for all ages," said Myriad Gardens Foundation Executive Director Maureen Heffernan in an email.Musical selections are purposefully curated to integrate with the lighting and will be holiday-themed. The installation is designed by Lightswitch, a consortium of internationally recognized lighting, media and visual designers, according to a news release.
"Illuminations: Starry Starry Night" is open 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday through Jan. 5. It will be closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but open on New Years Eve. Special holiday hours will be offered 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23 and Monday, Dec. 30.

This sounds crazy, but the first booster club meeting that I had we had been here about a month and we told the booster club to be prepared to have a meal on Thanksgiving Day, Hall said. We as a coaching staff felt like we had a real opportunity to practice on Thanksgiving.
Halls background as a coach stood out to Piedmont athletic director Layne Jones. When making the hire, it was almost a no-brainer choice.
Hall was the perfect fit to continue rejuvenating the program.
Superintendent (James) Whites vision has always been we wanted to be good not only academically but athletically, as well, Jones said. He always had a vision that we could win at a high level.
The seniors on this Piedmont team would have their third head coach in four years. Even with the positive signs they initially got from Hall, many were hesitant. Getting them to buy in was critical, Hall said, because once they did, he knew the underclassmen would follow.
The No. 1 thing we knew we had to do is, we had to build relationships, Hall said. A lot of that I think is on (the players) kind of buying into us and forming relationships with us and letting some walls down that have been built because of having so many head coaches over so many years.
When they let those walls down, I think we got a lot better.
Learning the offense was another challenge. It was the Wildcats fourth offense in three seasons, and it was unorthodox, too. The flexbone look, though it hasnt gone away, is tough to learn because of its precise movements but more difficult to stop when run effectively.

Its November at UVic, and it really feels like it. The oaks have shaken off their red leaves, the winter wind is picking up off the water, and the holidays still feel just a little too far away.
Although us Northern Hemisphere inhabitants should be used to it by now, the impacts of low light can take their toll on mental health this time of year. Amidst deadlines and grey skies, here are my best tips for staying positive and countering the winter blues.

If you call yourself a summer person, its easy to adopt a negative viewpoint towards winter. However, it isnt helpful to think like that; youll spend half of your lifetime in winter unless you move to the Equator!
There are many people who love winter. If youre feeling the winter blahs come on, write a list of things you can only do in winter, or things that are enhanced by the season. A few suggestions? Skiing, ice skating, hot chocolate, time to pursue your indoor hobbies, and of course, the holidays!
Take a look through events near me on Facebook, and find local holiday lights events or winter markets. Take a break from dwelling on the negative and think about the positive parts of the season. There are many people who love this time of year and no, theyre not crazy. They simply approach the season in a different way.
Yes, your body can make Vitamin D. But if youre stuck inside finishing your third paper of the week, its unlikely that youre getting enough. Risk factors for not enough Vitamin D include living in a northern climate and having a darker skin tone.
While Vitamin D can be one of those vitamins that you forget about, its an important regulator of mood, and can help metabolize other vitamins like calcium. Take it as part of a multivitamin, or increase your intake of foods that naturally contain Vitamin D like salmon, eggs, or cheese.
Easier said than done, I know. But regulating your circadian rhythms can help you adjust to the earlier twilight. Try to pick a night during the week to try and go to bed earlier than usual. For me, thats Monday nights, because the transition from Sunday to Monday usually hits me hard.
Go to bed earlier and try to get up earlier to finish any work you needed to finish the night before. Youll feel better working with the sun!
Help stave off feelings of darkness by taking advantage of the sunshine that you have. Take your mittens outside during your lunch break. Take a quick turn around Finnerty Garden or cut across the quad to get to class.
If youre usually a gym person, swap it a couple days a week for a bike ride or jog. Even if you can only carve out a couple minutes each day, youll feel better with some fresh air and exposure to natural light.
Growing up in Alaska, my dads happy light was a staple in our household. The powerful lights, designed to imitate sunlight and provide a fuller spectrum of light than traditional indoor lighting, are popular in northern climes. Testimonials abound describing their power to chase off winter blues, help the adjustment to daylight savings time, and even help improve sleep.
If youre struggling with sleep and the lack of light, try investing in some light therapy. (Compact dorm versions run about $40 online.) It could be the difference between a restless November and a productive semester!
Those of us who have depression are more likely to be affected by low light in the winter. If you cant shake feelings of depression during the darkest time of the year, its worth it to speak to a professional.
Doctors are available for walk-in appointments starting at 8:30am weekdays at the Peterson Health Center on campus (arrive at 8:30 for the best chance of getting in).
If you live off campus, the Gordon Head Walk-in Clinic accepts walk-ins on the weekends with a BC Care Card; or if youre closer to downtown, the Quadra Village Medical Center offers care for walk-ins, scheduled in the morning for appointments 9am-3pm, four days a week. Seasonal affective disorder is incredibly common and speaking to a medical professional could provide the relief you need.
Living in Victoria, the overcast winter skies are a seasonal theme, but the best news is, it is temporary. Come December 21st, we will be gaining daylight once again. Every season has its challenges, but we all deserve to have an amazing winter (and a productive end of term!) regardless of when the sun sets.

Once again, were talking the real life experience youre going to have with the machine and its tech rather than the lab scenario of everything already being set up.
Once youre ready to roll with the app, what can it do for you? Once again, because Dans actually put it through its paces in his own home he can let you know exactly how practical and sophisticated (or not) an individual smart washing machine is.
There are questions we all want answers to when were buying a washing machine. Will the spin ensure clothes are pretty dry when they come out of the drum? Is there a programme that means no ironing? Can the machine solve a I-need-it-today emergency? Dans real life reviewing ensures the washing machines are challenged with all the scenarios that come up in a busy home.
Also crucial are the range of cycles a machine offers. Will the washer actually cope with everything a family might want to chuck in there? Here, again, is where testing in a real home is invaluable. As the laundry basket fills with the whole familys dirty stuff, whether the machine has a programme to cope is challenged.
And what about selecting the washing programmes and operating the machine in the first place? Dans in-a-real-home testing puts him in the same place you will be if you buy the machine faced with an array of buttons or a touchscreen and he gives you the inside story on exactly how simple or fiddly this is.

A popular East End restaurant in Rochester is closing, at least for now. A notice on the website for City Grill, at the corner of East Avenue and Alexander Street, says the restaurant will be closing its doors on Thursday, after what the notice says was a beautiful 5 year run.
The note says that the decision was made by the owners and management because of complications related to the construction of a new hotel, at what is now the East Avenue Inn and Suites.
Developers are planning a new Courtyard by Marriott at that site. They broke ground on the project in October, with completion expected in October 2020.
The owners of City Grill say that they hope to eventually be able to re-open next to the new hotel.
The event spaces at Ballroom 384 will continue to be active. The note from City Grill says they are hoping that the renovation work at that corner will be a catalyst for the re-branding of the East Ave. and Alexander St. area.
A statement from City Hall spokesman Justin Roj, said that, "We eagerly await the reopening of the City Grill upon completion of the Marriott hotel on the adjacent property. We understand that the ongoing construction has greatly impacted the restaurant's parking and access to the site. However, the ownership team's investment in the new hotel and their plans to reopen the restaurant demonstrate the continued economic growth in the East End and throughout Downtown Rochester."
Roj also said that the City of Rochester issued a loan in 2011 to the owners of the City Grill that was paid off in full in 2017.
