New Delhi, Jan 30 (IANSlife): This is about Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, the gateway to the southern part of India. Like other cities in India Chennai too has had to change but interestingly, this large and undoubtedly splendid city, despite its ever growing population, it always seems to have room for more.

Its 150-foot lighthouse has always been the best view of the city and harbor, from the 150 ft lighthouse on the vast Marina Beach. A beach unlike the beaches in other states it is not always packed with people and filled to over-flowing. In fact at certain times in the day, it may seem almost deserted. But like the sea breeze that cools the city every evening, the beach is busier than before and modernity is bringing in fashions and activities into this normally sedate city these days.

The winds of change blew slowly and differently in sedate Chennai. In a way historically, it happened when the city donned a new name - giving up its old name Madras and was re-christened Chennai. The change in the name meant that it was no longer named after 'Madrasapattinam', which was the British settlement but was named Chennai after the parallel local area known as 'Chennapattinam.

With the past of many decades, the hamlets that had integrated to form Madras have witnessed phenomenal growth but despite this, Chennai continues to be a comparatively laid back city in comparison to other Indian metros. This has much to do with the sense of pride and aesthetics that come naturally to the dignified people of Tamil Nadu.

The erstwhile city of Madras is less than 400 years old, but gives the feeling of having been around for much longer. The British reached the area fairly early in their occupation of India and left traces of their military might at Fort St George and their religious presence at St Mary's Church said to be the oldest Anglican Church.

However Christianity appears to have been in the area many years earlier - in the16th century Portuguese explorers are known to have built a church over the tomb of St Thomas - one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus - which was known as the San Thome Church. In 1893, the British rebuilt it giving it the status of a Cathedral. Designed in the neo-gothic style, this is one of the few known churches in the world, to have been built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus. The St Thomas Cathedral Basilica located on the hillock St Thomas Mount, is also known as the International Shrine of St Thomas and draws pilgrims from all over the world.

Chennai can be said to have grown from a combination of villages that were gradually added to the original British settlement. These were either annexed or rented from erstwhile rulers, or given as grants, forming the different areas that are part of the Chennai that we see today. The very first village to be added was Triplicane, an area given on rent by the Ruler of Golconda, followed by more areas such as Egmore, Nungambakkam, Vepery, Tiruvottiyur, Tondiarpet, Vyaasarpuri, Ennore, Periapet, Perambur and others - each bringing its own historical and traditional values. Among the newest to be added post the two World Wars, were Adyar, Guindy and Saidapet. Some of the complex history of the growth of Chennai, may be seen at the Museum.

The White Town', was the area where the English settled down and in 1644, built a fortress, which came to be known as Fort St George. It was the very first Fortress built in India by the British and in time became the coastal city of Madras leading up to the modern city of Chennai. The construction of the fort led to further settlements and plenty of trading activity, in a location that had so far been uninhabited land. Needless to say, the Fortress was the centre of all the activity. Even today, Fort St George continues to be part of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and other official activities.

The East India Company which had entered India in 1600 for trading activities already had a license for trading at Surat. But to secure their trade lines they felt the need of a port closer to the Malaccan Straits to trade in spices. They managed to buy a piece of coastal land originally known as Chennirayarpattinam'(orChannapatnam') where they began construction of a harbor and a fort. The Fort was built at a cost of 3,000 pounds and completed on 23rd April 1644.Coinciding with St George's Day, the patron saint of England, the Fort was named Fort St George, in his honour.

Soon, the Fort became the hub for plenty of activity, with a new settlement known as George Town. It was this area that faced the sea and fishing villages that went on to add villages that grew to form the city of Madras. It was also from here that the English established their influence over Carnatic and kept at bay, the rulers of Arcot and Srirangapatna as well as the French Forces in Pondichery. In 1665, the fort was enlarged and strengthened with an enlarged garrison, after hearing the news of the formation of the French East India Company.

The Fort with its 20ft tall walls the British were able to withstand a number of attacks during the 18th century. However it was briefly in the possession of the French from 1746, but was restored to England under a Treaty in 1749. The Fort now serves as one of the administrative headquarters for Tamil Nadu and still houses a garrison of troops in transit to various locations in South India and the Andamans. The Fort Museum contains many relics of the Colonial era, including portraits of many of the Governors of Madras, maintained by the Archeological Survey of India with the administrative support of the Indian Army.

Actually The St. George Fort has two sections that are worth seeing - the St. Mary's Church and the Fort Museum. St. Mary's Church is the oldest surviving church built by the British in India as well as the oldest Anglican Church in India. St. Mary's Church is said to be the oldest Anglican church - "East of the Suez' and the oldest British building in India. It is said have been built in 1680 when those who lived in the fort needed a place of worship. The church was built with voluntary contributions from the English who lived at the fort. It was planned to be "80 feet long, 50 feet broad and built with 3 aisles arched with brick and stone".

Work on this charming building began on March 25, 1678 and the church was established in 1680. It has certainly stood the test of time very well. The tombstones in its graveyard are said to be the oldest in India. Another interesting structure is a 150 ft tall Flagstaff, made entirely of teakwood. Special in many ways, the St Mary's Church is quite famous and has often been referred to as the 'Westminster Abbey of the East'.

However, one of the most striking buildings here is the Fort St. George Museum. It houses the relics of the British personnel who inhabited this fort. The construction of the building was completed in 1795 and served as the Madras Bank, while the large hallway upstairs served as the venue for public meetings as well as for entertainment. Today, the fort museum showcases a host of artifacts such as coins, medals, paintings, letters, etc, belonging to the colonial period. The banqueting hall Wellesley House is named after Richard Wellesley, the Governor-General of India. The 14.5 ft tall marble statue of Lord Cornwallis (1738-1805) carved by Thomas Banks, is considered a rare masterpiece of art. Carved in England, it managed to survive the rough seas and reached India safely.

Do you ever watch awards shows and wonder what planet these people are from? Or maybe if you are on another planet? For example, I used to watch the Grammys back on the old paths, but when I looked at the lineup of performers for last weeks show, as well as the nominated singers, I recognized so few of them that I decided to forgo this annual event.

After my Facebook friends posted about the vulgarity of some performers, I was glad I opted instead to watch The Help on DVD with my hubster. I am also relieved I didnt bother with the recent Golden Globe awards after I heard how the hosts language often had to be bleeped out.

Sometimes I still watch the Oscars just to see if Ive even heard of the nominated movies. The artsy powers-that-be dont usually nominate the types of movies I frequent pictures from the Star Wars or Marvel superhero franchises, flicks that even kids could enjoy, faith-based films for the family.

However, occasionally the Emmy folks take into account some of the social justice movies I love, (although I still think Viola Davis shouldve won Best Actress for The Help back in 2012 no offense, Meryl). Yes, I am a sucker for a movie about a cause, but especially one based on facts.

I have seen some especially powerful ones in recent months. One was Dark Waters, starring my favorite Incredible Hulk, Mark Ruffalo, as corporate defense attorney Rob Bilott. I am beyond puzzled as to why it received no Oscar nod.

This riveting drama tells the true story of a lawyers fight to hold the giant corporation DuPont accountable for supposedly knowingly poisoning people with some of their household products, as well as with the wastes from making those products. The movie had some bad language and purposely-dreary sets and scenery, but it is a story everyone who owns a Teflon pan should acquaint themselves with.

This movies premise felt uncomfortably familiar to someone who has fought against improper disposal of coal ashthe toxic fly ash that once coated our cars, roofs, garden soil over in Dry Hollow where I grew up. When I mentioned the uncanny similarities to my daughters as we exited the dark theater, an older man walking in front of us suddenly turned to me and asked, Are you from West Virginia?

No, sir, I replied, explaining that I identified with big companies polluting the areas here in N.C. He told me he was from the very areas depicted in Dark Waters economically depressed regions in WV where big business could more easily dump on those they considered less-equipped to realize the risks and fight back. We two strangers spoke for a few minutes, feeling an unexpected kinship.

As a conservative who is very much pro-life, I find it extremely ironic that many national leaders of the same conservative party which fights against abortion dont seem very concerned these days with environmental pollutants that arent pro-life at all. If you are concerned about the life of a babe in the womb (as am I), shouldnt you be just as concerned about the lives of people outside the womb who are being slowly poisoned by the toxins some wealthy companies are producing and dumping?

In other words, why is it only wrong when a life is suddenly terminated before birth? Isnt slow and agonizing termination over many years just as bad or even worse? When the Bible said that the love of money is the root of all evil, it wasnt kidding. Money is not inherently evil; the love of it is as in greed that cares more about profits than humanity.

Dark Waters explores that type of greed where the bottom line obviously matters more than the people in poor rural areas who are having groundwater and farmland tainted with toxic chemicals. And these arent just toxins that will eventually fade away; they are called forever chemicals because they do not totally leave the bloodstream, thus slowly accumulating over a lifetime.

As part of the PFAS family of chemicals, these man-made toxins wear titles such as PFOA or PFOS. Studies have estimated that at least 98 percent of humans have some amount of these forever chemicals in their bodies already. The same is true of animals, as the toxins have been found even in seawater in remote locations.

(You should Google what happens to pet birds when a Teflon pan is heated to extremely high temperatures. The result might shock you.)

These chemicals were used for decades in stain-resistant carpets, microwave popcorn bags, carpet-cleaning liquids, Teflon products, upholstery, apparel, floor wax, textiles, firefighting foam, sealants and even some foods. Due in part to Lawyer Bilotts fight against DuPont, public awareness of forever chemicals has led to many U.S. companies ceasing to use them, but some imported goods may still contain these toxins.

Some populations at high risk of danger are those who live near industrial waste dumping sites IF the wastes were not properly disposed of. Studies have conclusively proven that such dumping sites tend to exist in rural areas where the citizens are poorer and more likely to be of minority status. The implication is that such people are of little value.

And that, my friends, is unethical. As one of my favorite movie characters Malachi Johnson (played by Danny Glover in the western Silverado) says, That aint right, and Ive had enough of what aint right.

Once again, the answer to all of this is found in the Good Book. If everyone yes, even big business interests and wealthy industries loved their neighbors as themselves, none of this would be happening. If you love your fellow humans as much as you do yourself, you would never dump toxic waste in someone elses backyard because you wouldnt want it in yours. You would not knowingly cover up the fact that the chemicals you are using to make it easier for us to fry food or clean our carpets have been proven to pile up inside our bodies and cause many kinds of cancers and diseases.

The Bible says that love covers a multitude of sins. In truth, it prevents sins, too. I pray that love for humanity will one day trump the greedy love of money. Miracles do happen.

Chinese state-owned media and at least one party official are spreading disinformation to convince foreigners of the success of Beijings response to the growing public health emergency of the coronavirus.

Peoples Daily, owned by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the most-circulated newspaper in China, and Lijian Zhao, a deputy director of information with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, tweeted an image Monday morning of a building they claimed was a hospital in Wuhan, China, the center of the recent coronavirus outbreak. The publication and the bureaucrat said enterprising workers in Wuhan had constructed the hospital in just 16 hours. In reality, the picture showed an apartment building more than 600 miles away. BuzzFeed News first reported the fakes.

The Global Times, another party outlet, published a story Monday about the purported construction: Amazing! Huoshenshan Hospitals 1st building completed in 16 hours! A screenshot in BuzzFeeds story showed that the Global Times used the same picture as Zhao and Peoples Daily. The picture no longer appeared in the article Monday afternoon.

Developers of the $1.8 billion Frisco Station project are ready to roll with a third office building.

VanTrust Real Estate is ready to start construction of The Offices Three at Frisco Station, a 210,000-square-foot speculative office building.

Its part of the 242-acre mixed-use project near the northwest corner of the Dallas North Tollway and Warren Parkway.

Work on the six-story building will start before the end of the month with a completion set for late next year.

Frisco is the hottest market in North Texas and was Americas fastest-growing city in 2018, Bill Baumgardner, VanTrust executive vice president, said in a statement. With the job growth and office demand in North Texas, the projections for leasing are excellent.

Also, wellness and technology amenities in new, collaborative office spaces are key to companies talent acquisition and retention strategies, and this site will offer a premier environment for a healthy, smart and engaging work experience.

The first office building in Frisco Station was completed in 2018 and sold last year to a partnership representing a unit of MetLife.

MetLife also has an option to buy the second Frisco Station office project, which VanTrust just completed and is also significantly leased.

With the success of the first two buildings, the developer is pushing ahead with phase three.

Dallas architect HKS will design the project. Manhattan Construction is the general contractor.

The new office building will include a fitness center, conference center and tenant lounge.

Commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield is marketing the building to tenants.

Frisco Station is a development of VanTrust Real Estate, Hillwood and the Rudman Partnership.

It wraps around the Dallas Cowboys Star in Frisco development.

Along with the offices, Frisco Station includes apartments, retail, hotel and other uses.

Hillwood has already opened its first, 300-unit apartment development in the project called Station House. And construction is underway on a second 322-unit rental community called Cadence.

Atlanta-developer Novare Group has opened its 25-story SkyHouse Frisco Station apartment tower on the west side of the Dallas North Tollway. Its the tallest building in Frisco.

Lewisville-based NewcrestImage Hotels has opened the doors on two new hotels in Frisco Station. The Marriott AC Hotel and the Residence Inn are the first of four hotels planned in the project.

Together the new hotels have 300 rooms plus meeting space.

The overall Frisco Station project will have more than 4 million square feet of office space, 2,400 apartments, shops, restaurants and civic facilities. A large greenbelt and park will cut through the middle of the community.
