LUBBOCK, Texas On Monday, the demolition of Hotel Ava continued as the date marked almost a month since the demolition permit was issued.

The demolition of the hotel comes after a few months of turmoil for the property including a murder and the sudden request for residents to leave.

As previously reported, a murder was committed on the site earlier this year. Gilbert Cardona III, 26, was indicted for the shooting death of Joshua Gomez back in February.

Later in the month of February, residents of the hotel were abruptly asked to leave the property. In most cases, they were given less than 24 hours to gather their belongings and leave the hotel.

A sign was posted on the door following the residents departure saying the hotel had been closed for deep cleaning and sanitation issues.

Update in the Demolition and Future Plans for Bonneville Elementary School – KPVI News 6 - April 28, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

A salvage crew clears the historic Bonneville Elementary School before demolition.

Mark Dahlquist, Executive Director of Neighborworks Pocatello, said "we were very transparent with our plans to remove that building and make it into some housing."

As plans to tear down an iconic yet abandoned building in Pocatello begins, the future plans look bright for the city.

With affordable housing being an issue for many citizens, neighborworks believes that this new development should help.

Dahlquist mentioned that, "we think that that development inside the city limits and what we call infill development, is really great for the community."

But what kind of affordable housing will be developed in this area?

    Dahlquist answered,

"they'll be housing units versus an apartment complex and will be something that we think will just be very congruent and complimentary of the neighborhood."

Giving home owners the option to buy a new house within the $150,000 range.

Mark also mentions how the Bonneville development helps save the community money.

"One really great asset with this development is the location and we're using existing infrastructure which is just a lot economical and not taxing on our municipal systems."

The one pressing question that many might have is how is the pandemic affecting the plans for the new Bonneville development.

Mark says that plans look to continue forward without a hitch.

"You know frankly it has not slowed down, that our plans are to really move forward full steam ahead."

Further planning for the Bonneville development site will be held in the summer.

Details such as what type of housing, grant approval, and more will be released during that time frame.

Demolition begins on Gary’s 111-year-old Water Tower | The Crusader Newspaper Group – The Chicago Cusader - April 28, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Crusader Staff Report

Demolition has begun on Garys historic, 111-year-old water tower. Clad in scaffolding from top to bottom, the wrecking ball will soon demolish the high rise where for more than a century it towered over Gary and could be seen for miles.

The 133-foot tower was built in 1909, three years before Gary was founded. One of the citys oldest structures, the tower is a crumbling Indiana landmark whose days are numbered.

The Indiana-American Water Company has cleared the way for the structure to be demolished.

Indiana-American Water spokes- man Joe Loughmiller says the white steel storage tank is beyond its useful life and can no longer be used. Loughmiller says the structure has been maintained, but inspections have found significant deficiencies that could jeopardize safety if it is not demolished.

In January, 2020, Indiana-American Water began building a new 500,000-gallon elevated water tank to replace the existing 290,000-gallon filter backwash tank.

Loughmiller said the historic water tower is beyond its useful life and would be too expensive to save. He said in one news report that it would cost $1 million to rehabilitate the foundation, while it would cost $900,000 to demolish the structure. Falling debris and a crumbling foundation are reportedly safety concerns.

Loughmiller said inspection reports found significant safety and operational deficiencies in the structures that would require extensive amounts of time and funds to correct.

According to Indiana Landmarks, shortly after the citys founding by U.S. Steel in 1906, the Gary Heat, Light, and Water Company constructed the utilities necessary for tens of thousands of new residents and businesses.

The company hired civil engineer John W. Alvord of Chicago. He drew on his experiences observing waterworks around the world and supplying water for the 1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition to capture the fresh water of Lake Michigan nearly three miles away.

The centerpiece of the waterworks was a Beaux-Arts pump house that no longer stands, and the 133-foot water tower on Garys west side that still stands. Completed in 1909, the towers tank measured 30 feet in diameter and sat on eight 90-foot steel columns. Rather than settling for an exposed steel skeleton, the Gary Heat, Light, and Water Company added a concrete block shell that transformed the utilitarian tower into an octagonal landmark, complete with decorative cornice and parapet wall.

According to Indiana Landmarks, in 1911, the city lit a fire atop the tower in the hour leading up to the July 4 fireworks, signaling the radically transformed landscape. Indiana American Water Company continues to use the site and tower, now one of the earliest structures on the citys skyline.

Wood from the masons scaffolding was repurposed to create the narrow wood staircase inside Garys water tower, and a large bell hangs inside once used to signal fires and other emergencies in town.

Tay will study whether further development possible at two waterfront areas – OrilliaMatters.Com - April 28, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tay council wants to know if there is potential for development in the Grandview Beach and Paradise Point areas.

That's why councillors approved moving forward with a hydrogeological assessment todetermine the need for sewers and advise on the capacity for continued or expanded use of septic systems in that area.

And even though they all voted to pass this motion at their most recent meeting, Coun. Barry Norris had his concerns.

"It's more or less to point out ---here we go (again)," he said in an interview with MidlandToday.

Norris wasn't sure why yet another assessment was needed when previous assessments existed and results had indicated well-water contamination, according to a 2015 assessment report.

"Groundwater supplies in the Paradise Point/Grandview Beach community are highly vulnerable to bacteriological contamination," says the report.

The study also concluded that under the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change development guidelines, the nitrate impact of the community is between 25 and 28 mg/L. If the remainder of the lots are developed, then the nitrate impact would be 27 to 30 mg/L. The current limit for development on on-site services for the area would be 22 to 63 lots.

But public works director Peter Dance said part of that earlier report's concerns have already been addressed.

"The municipality constructed a year-round water main in the area. So that part of the health issue, if people choose to connect to our water main is taken care of," he said.

He added that the study's main focus is septage and advice on continued or expanded use of septic systems to determine if the current holding zone can be lifted.

Dance said afew decades agothere'd been arecommendationfor the townshipto establisha municipal sewer system.

"There was some grant money available at that time, too," he said. "I can't remember how much. It ended up going to the municipal board (Ontario Municipal Board) because some residents were opposed to the project."

Mayor Ted Walker recalls the incident.

"The OMB in the end did not approve the project and about a month later, the Walkerton situation happened," he said, adding that the decision might have been different if the appeal had been made after the Walkerton incident.

Walker saidwith municipal water already available to residentsin that area, council is now looking at questions around whetheror not the holding zone can be suspended.

"The study is checking the groundwater," he said."It's just an overall assessment of the water quality."

Walker said depending on the study's results, residents in the area could likelybuild an addition or a new home. But he added all this would happen with certain conditions in place that would be determined at a later date.

"I think all of council is hoping that there is opportunity for development down there," Walker said."Our council is very pro-development. And the other thing is to know where everything is at."

    Norris, however, has his doubts.

"My argument to this whole thing is that there's no mandate that everybody has to hook up," he said."The problem you run into is that there will still be people on well water. And it's not drinkable, according to these reports."

Unfortunately, Norris saidone can't go back inhistory to installboththe sewer and water lines.

"Nowadays, the cost is a major problem because you're into the limestone," he said."After the 2015 study, the option was to put in the sewer and water line, but the cost would have been too much. Is it viable to turn around and spend that kind of money when the value of properties in that area isn't even that high?

"I just didn't feel the expenditures justified going through with it," Norris added."I don't believe anything has changed for those vacant lots to build on."

Making the Most of Quarantine – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW, LLC) - April 28, 2020 by Mr HomeBuilder

    April 28, 2020by John Cox

At the beginning of this year I was excited about the opportunity to fish the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit and the Bassmaster Elite Series. I was most excited about fishing the spawn in March and April on some of my favorite lakes. When the schedules for both circuits were first released I was feeling very confident about doing some sight-fishing on Santee Cooper, Eufaula and Lake Hartwell. Its been difficult missing out on tournament fishing during the peak of the spawn. Just like everyone, Im trying to adjust to the change of plans.

This is usually the busiest time of year for me. Normally I would be at a tournament or making plans and packing to drive to the next one. Id be studying maps of lakes and checking the Weather Channel and strategizing for the next tournament. Then when Im home, the kids are busy with the spring softball season and soccer and we stay on the go with everyones schedules. Our way of normal life has come to a stop as most everyones has. The one nice thing is that quarantine has freed up a lot of time I dont normally have.

For a while now we have been wanting to close in a room in the garage, but just havent had any spare time. Being home with nowhere to go has forced us to finally tackle this project. With the help of my buddy Keith Carson, his girlfriend Natalie, and my wife, Melissa and kids we almost have a room built in the garage. My wife and kids have been learning how to hang drywall, scrape popcorn off ceilings, use a drill, mud the walls, sand drywall, hang a ceiling fan and paint. Its been a learning experience for the kids and I bet theyll be ready to go back to school by the time this project is over. Drywalling and painting has taken me back to my roots. Back in the day, Keith and I used to paint apartments to earn enough money to fish our next tournaments. Man, I dont miss those days. Doing this remodel project makes me appreciate even more the opportunity to fish for a living to provide for my family. Sometimes you dont realize how much you love something until you arent able to do it anymore.

Its not been all work and no play though. Weve been accomplishing a lot on the house, but weve also made some time to do what I love and thats fish. I dont normally get the opportunity to fish with the family on our home waters during this time of year because Im always gone. Ive been able to take all the kids fun fishing and drag some shiners. Weve been limited on what lakes we can go to because a lot of boat ramps have been closed, but fortunately our county is still open. Weve also taken advantage of the pond in the backyard. My big stress reliever isgoing down and feeding my fish. I recently discovered that my fish love bologna. You should see the looks I get at the dollar store when I clear the bologna shelf. Were still testing out what our pet fish will eat. This past week, my daughter Lily gave one of the bass a Peeps from her Easter basket and he loved it!

This quarantine is an adjustment for everyone with the uncertainty of what the future holds, fears of not being able to bring in an income, school cancelled for the year, virtual learning for the kids and everyone being home together all the time. I really hope we can get back to tournament fishing, but theres also been good to find in all of this. We live such a fast-paced life. We are ALWAYS on the go, whether its prepping for a tournament, practicing for a tournament, competing in a tournament orbeing on the road and away from family. During the last month of this quarantine Ive been able to enjoy some time with my family without the rush of an alarm or time clock. Ive been able to get a fishtank and net with Lily and watch her excitement daily as she catches tadpoles and baby bass and adds them to her tank. Ive been able to play catch with Savannah and I finally talked her into holding abass. Ive been able to go on some late night runs to Dairy Queen and just talk to my son, Adam, about life. Ive enjoyed watching Netflix with my wife after the kids are in bed. Weve been able to sleep in together.Theres so many important events and occasions I have to miss out on when Im traveling. With my original tournament scheduleI was going to be away on Easter this year but with the quarantine I was able to see my kids faces on Easter morning. Iwas able to be home when my daughter, Alyssa, did her gender reveal to announce Im having a grandson!

So as much as I cant wait to get the green light to go back to tournament fishing I am choosing to see the positive in all of this. Im thankful were all healthy and safe. Were always wishing that time would slow down and right now for a small bit of time, the world has come to a stop and Im taking advantage of it to enjoy my family. I think a good life lesson to take from this quarantine is to not take what we have for granted because life can change in a moment. I didnt truly value the opportunity to make a living fishing until now. My prayers are that we can all safely return to tournament fishing soon. Until then be safe, stay home and enjoy the time with your family and hopefully we can all return to doing what we love soon.
