In April 2020 Matt Hatton and William Webb published a book entitled The Internet of Things Myth, exploring why the last decade has not been as successful for IoT as might have been hoped or expected. Previous articles on IoT Business News examined the challenges represented by poor product development and the lack of dominant standards for wireless communications. Other missteps by suppliers, as discussed in depth in the book, included focusing too much on valuation, being too eager to move along the value chain, and failing to realise their own organisational limitations. However, not all of the blame for poor IoT adoption can be levelled at the vendors. Adopters also struggled with the complexity of implemented IoT. That is the focus of this article.
Early IoT implementations were generally appended to existing practices, simply offering a more efficient way of doing things. For instance, monitoring refrigerated shipping containers as a way to ensure the cargo had been cared for within acceptable parameters. Very valuable, but not likely to necessitate a fundamental change in how the shipping company operates. As the complexity of the application increases so too does the requirement to change business processes. Take for instance Anticimex, a pest control company, which introduced remote monitoring of its traps, an upgrade on the previous requirement to send a person to check them regularly. This relatively simple switch to a remote monitoring solution necessitates a new approach to customer care, workforce scheduling and more.
As further complexity is layered on, the implications for commercial and organisational change grow even further. One of the more extreme examples is any IoT solution predicated on providing an x-as-a-service (xaaS) business model, such as paying for jet engines or agricultural equipment based on the number of miles flown, or amount of grain gathered. These types of approaches necessitate a substantial overhaul of the way in which the organisation operates. For instance, the shift from a capex-based model (where the client pays up-front for the hardware) to an opex-based model (based on ongoing payments) will transform the Finance department, with a recurring revenue model and a much greater loading of cost onto the balance sheet. Thats in addition to adapting to a completely different sales model, ongoing customer care requirements, demand for field service technicians and so forth.
The change implicit in embracing IoT, and particularly the most sophisticated models, within an organisation ranges from disruptive to transformational. Adopters of IoT must give ample consideration to the commercial and operational implications of deployment, and make the appropriate changes within their organisations. This is often much more challenging and time-consuming than the technical changes. What are the big barriers? The fundamental issue is that it is harder to change organisational working practices and business models than it is to adopt new technologies. In the book we examine eight major areas that are likely to be disrupted within an organisation if it is truly embracing the opportunities presented by IoT. These include the adoption of new processes, the acquisition of new skills, the switch to new business models, the need for new partners and the over-riding requirement for a well thought-out change management strategy.
It is notable the extent to which adopters of IoT have ignored the more challenging transformational forms of IoT that require them to make the changes noted above. IoT deployments have focused almost exclusively on low-hanging fruit of simple efficiency saving based on streamlining internal processes. Done correctly IoT is transformational to many aspects of an organisations operations. Its not possible to harness IoT without also being able to make the necessary changes to people and process.

Poultry red mites (Dermanyssus gallinae) are the most significant mite threat throughout Europe and affect the smallest of backyard flocks to the largest commercial production units.
This tiny mite also has a significant impact. Recent surveys estimate the total annual cost of infestations in the European egg laying industry to be 232 million, affecting more than 390 million hens in all production types: breeders; pullets; and layer hens.
Red mites live and rapidly breed within the hen house and the surrounding areas but only emerge at night to crawl onto and suck blood from the birds, before retreating to cracks and crevices during the day.
They are able to survive and reproduce at a wide range of temperatures, but it is during periods of warmer weather that populations increase rapidly. One female mite, and her descendants, can produce 2,000 more mites in a month.
We have had a warmer than average April in Ireland this year, explained Maureen Prendergast, poultry technical manager at MSD Animal Health. And, as a result, were already hearing reports of increased levels of poultry red mite in some commercial units.
Small numbers of mites may be tolerated by laying hens but, when a critical threshold is exceeded, mite infestation results in reduced productivity due to anaemia, decreased egg production and quality, reduced growth of birds and increased mortality from stress and the presence of other diseases.
Mites are known to carry a multitude of viral and bacterial pathogens and the presence of these in birds that are compromised from mite infection results in higher levels of mortality.
Even at low levels, mites may cause pecking among birds resulting in injury, warned Maureen.
This adds to the welfare significance of infestation with red mites. Of course, mites can also affect the humans looking after the hens, causing irritation and scratching and even an allergic dermatitis in some susceptible individuals.
Biosecurity alone is often insufficient to control their spread as they are carried by wild birds, rats and other mammals, the boots of farmers or in feed. They can also make their way at great speed through very small cracks and gaps and for long distances.
Poultry keepers should be on the lookout for signs of mite infestation early this season. In very heavy infestations, mites will be seen in greyish clumps with their eggs under the perches or in dark corners of the shed.
The most useful way to check the levels of mites in a commercial laying unit is to set traps in strategic routes for the mites as they climb to the perches. Smallholders, or those with backyard flocks, may notice their hens are reluctant to return to the hen house at night or seem noisy and unsettled, advised Maureen.
Current management methods lack sufficient effectiveness to keep mite infestations under control at many poultry farms, and often pose safety threats for both birds and humans.
The issue of residues in eggs and poultry meat has become more significant due to the enforcement of the EU directive on Biocidal Product Regulation 528/2012 which controls poultry disinfectants and mite powders.
A novel licensed product, containing fluralaner, has been available for the destruction of poultry red mites since 2017, with over 7 million hens treated in the island of Ireland.
Treatment consists of two applications (via the drinking water), seven days apart in order to target all stages of the life cycle. Previously only available to professional poultry farmers, it is now available for smaller flocks. The egg withdrawal period is zero days.

Lockdown 3.0 has started and it has been five days since the Centre released its guidelines and two days since the new phase of relaxations were implemented, however, confusion and chaos prevailed in Pune as the top officials failed to be on the same page regarding administrative orders.
Even during Tuesdays joint press conference, there were independent orders by each authority on what will be functional - services of maids, supply of petrol and diesel, operation of non-essential shops and traffic movement.
The joint press conference addressed by Pune divisional commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar; district collector Naval Kishore Ram; Pune municipal commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad and police commissioner K Venkatesham further added to the lack of clarity, forcing them to go into a huddle once again after the presser.
To avoid confusion, it has been decided that the PMC chief will take decisions regarding containment and non-containment zones in the city while the district collector has been authorised to decide orders for the rest of the district, said Mhaisekar. PMC chief Shekhar Gaikwad said he will issue fresh order about non-essential shops and its timings by Wednesday morning.
Earlier in the press conference, Mhaisekar had said, Maids in areas other than containment zones will be allowed to function. However, collector Ram countered it by saying it will be difficult to identify if the maid is from containment zone or not and hence, their services will not be allowed.
On the issue of functioning of five non-essential shops in every lane, PMC commissioner Gaikwads order was to allow them. However, district collector Ram said that in absence of any clarity on which shops should be allowed to function, no decision will be taken till May 17.
Mhaisekar, according to officials, has asked PMC chief to work on the odd-even formula under which five non-essential commodity shops will be allowed to operate on alternate days on every street.
The lack of clarity was evident during the discussion on supply of petrol and diesel as well as the petrol pump dealers association of Pune said that all dealers have been allowed to give fuel to everyone. However, collector Ram said, Only those involved in essential services will get fuel.
On the issue of traffic movement, Mhaisekar said that a decision will be taken soon on who will be allowed to go out. As per the previous order, only those involved in essential services will be allowed to step out with passes offered by police authorities.

Granola bars, popcorn, and almonds dipped in chocolate.
Its not necessarily typical food youd find at a food pantry, but it is something you might find now at Rise Food Pantry in Hightstown, thanks to Alaska Airlines.
The airline recently launched its #MillionMealsChallenge as a way to help feed families affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Finding themselves with extra food following the suspension of inflight service last month, the airline worked with local food banks to provide food for families.
And in late April, the Alaska Airlines Foundation pledged $200,000 to provide meals to over a dozen food banks. So far, theyve donated more than one million meals.
The company donated some extra food to the pantry in Hightstown, after Stephanie Derr suggested it.
Derr is a station manager for the airline at Newark Liberty International Airport, and shes also a volunteer fire-police captain for the Hightstown Fire Department. She saw the amount of people Rise was feeding every weekendupwards of 500 peopleand was inspired to connect her company to it.
Well, theyre doing a drive-by food pantry on the weekends and the traffic in town, you just know thats where everybodys going and to see the amount of cars that are going that are really in need right now is just staggering to me, she told NJ Advance Media. Soon as my company announced this, they were my first thought.
So on this past Friday, Derr and her team donated five pallets of meals to Rise, representing close to 2,000 meals and snacks to the local community. And the help was greatly appreciated, Leslie Koppel, Rises executive director, said.
First we said, can we have the king crab legs, or you know, the smoked salmon or something? Koppel said with a laugh. But its just amazing...local people helping each other and bringing the resources right back into the community where they live.

Other food donated by the airline included Minute Maid orange juice, potato chips, dark chocolate, KIND bars, and tapas snack boxes.
Rise has been serving more families during the pandemic, Koppel said. Before this, they served about 100-200 families on a weekly basis, but now theyre serving 300-400 families each week. They also did a drive-through pantry for the past five weeks, where anywhere from 300-900 families came through in a few hours.
The food pantry is in a large space, but moved there thinking it would conduct workshops and classes.
We didnt realize that with COVID, wed be serving three times as many people and we would need the space just for food, Koppel said. So were in a bigger space and were serving three times as many clients as we used to.
Open for the last 53 years, Rise services people from the neighboring area, including southern Middlesex County, Monroe, and Cranbury, but the primary service area is Hightstown and East Windsor. Before COVID-19, people could choose what they wanted inside the pantry, but thats no longer the case.
A lot of local, small pantries that were run out of churches, maybe run by a lot of elderly people, they all closed, so the support system for local families isnt in smaller towns, in these more suburban towns any more, she said. So were seeing a big influx of people from outside of the East Windsor, Hightstown area, which we usually serve.
Donors have been generous, she said, between restaurants closing their doors and donating perishable goods, to local farmers supplying unsold or slightly bruised produce. And the help from companies and people like Derr hasnt been forgotten, whether theyve helped because they live in town, or have seen the drive-throughs, or have experienced food insecurity themselves.
Theyve said, you know, we have to figure out a way to repurpose this food that was going somewhere else, Koppel said. 'We cannot throw it away. People need it and they need it now.'

The second extension of coronavirus-induced lockdown began across the country from Monday. Gautam Buddh Nagar administration has issued a new set of coronavirus guidelines, which was made public on Wednesday night. The guidelines stated that residents are not allowed to take walks outdoors and advised them not to invite guests during the lockdown period. The government has given relaxations like opening of standalone shops, both essential, non-essentials, liquor shops besides other services including re-opening of the private offices in this extended phase of lockdown till 17 May. Noida falls under the red zone, therefore, the city has been divided into containment and non-containment zones.
Here is what's allowed, what's prohibited in Noida, Greater Noida:
1) Those industries who have got permitted through portal / email need not apply again and can start operation immediately. The government is committed to ensure all permitted industrial activities can start with seamless interface and transparency
2) The workers/employee working in industrial units do not need any separate passes. The ID card issued by the Industrial Units who have been permitted shall suffice. In case of industry employing 50 or more workers, they have to have dedicated vehicles, the registration nos to be intimated to DCP Traffic
3) As per MHA Guidelines private offices shall work with 33% of their total work force. They do not required any separate permission for this purpose.They do not need any separate pass they can go to office with their valid ID card issued by Respected Offices.
4) Closure of Interstate and Inter district borders shall remain in force as per previous order. No relaxation has been made in this regard.
5) Only essential/emergency goods, services are allowed Inside containment zones. No movement of person allowed in and out of containment zones except for medical emergencies and for maintaining supply of essential goods and services.
6) Entry om maids: It is clarified, that RWAs can take a decision, after consulting their respective residents and consensus building, whether to allow/ not allow/ allow with conditions entry of maid/ house help. The following will be mandatory in case the maid/ house help are allowed or allowed with conditions:
7) Persons above the age of 65 years of age, with co- morbidities, pregnant women, and children below the age of 10 to not venture outside the premises of ones own home unless for medical emergencies and severe critical essential requirements.
8) All non-essential / movement shall remain strictly prohibited between 7 pm to 7 am.
9) Only 1 rider on a two wheeler and 2 passengers along with driver permitted in 4 wheeler.
10) Spitting in public places/any area shall be punishable with a fine. Consumption of liquor, paan, gutka, tobacco in public places and common areas are not allowed.

THE HOUSE help working at Sector 27B residents house, who tested positive, had come in contact with 122 people, said the quarantine team upon tracing her contacts on Friday. came out to be positive and did household works with the Bapu dham based driver of the family had come in contact with 122 people when contact tracing was done, as per the quarantine team.
The house help was also in contact with the driver at the residence, whos report is still awaited. However, administration officials quarantined the chemist shop workers, where the driver visited, and the milkman who supplied milk to the family and had come in contact with the house help.
In a Sector WhatsApp group, the 85-year-old owner of the house maintained that the driver from Bapu dham came just once to take salary that too on April 10. The owner added that she did not require the services of the driver. She added that she had sent the maid to the hospital.
However, local councillor Devinder Singh Babla said that according to government authorities, the driver from Bapu dham kept coming to the residence and also visited on April 25 and during other times which are being concealed.
While speaking to The Indian Express, Babla said, It is not a crime to get infected. Just that if the maid has developed fever, they can intimate us so that we coordinate with the authorities. The maid has been going around taking vegetables from vendors, taking the dog for a walk and various other things.
This is the first case to be reported from sector 27B.
Baljinder Singh Bittu, Chairman of FOSWAC, Chandigarh said that they have already appealed to the residents to not call house helps and drivers, especially those from Bapu Dham.
The owner stated that the maid had mild fever on April 23 and informed her son about it on April 24 evening.
She added that on April 25, the house help was referred to a dispensary in Sector 19 where they told her they were not seeing patients with fever and that she should go to Sector 16, where she got medicine for five days. On experiencing high fever, she visited the hospital again in April 28 and was given medicines for three more days. The owner added that her samples were taken on April 29 and she was admitted.
It was alleged that the house help kept asking about her report, but she was not informed about them. Meanwhile, UT Adviser Manoj Parida said that there was absolutely no delay in sealing or containing the affected area.
When asked about why the Bapu dham colony was sealed in phases, he said, When the first case was reported, we sealed the affected part where 3,000 people were staying. Then we expanded the sealed area. There was no delay at all in sealing the area. It was done immediately as and when the cases were reported.
