Most home security systems detect a few things like fire, open doors, and motion. Theyre also expensive and often come with equally pricey service contracts. Notion aims keep you apprised of whats going on in your home, even when youre not there with a little puck packed with sensors. You cant buy it yet, but this device is absolutely tearing it up on Kickstarter.

Each self-contained Notion unit contains a sensor for light, acceleration, orientation, temperature, natural frequency, proximity, and moisture. Its basically all the sensors from your smartphone crammed into a little plastic puck. Each notion connects to a hub that plugs into a wall outlet. The hub has a WiFi radio, which is how it connects to your home network and sends you alerts. The Notion sensors have a battery that should last about two years and can be replaced by the user with standard coin cells.

Because Notion has such a wide array of sensors, it can be used to monitor a ton of things around the house. For example, it can detect a door opening, movement in a room, moisture in the basement, or the sound of a smoke alarm going off. The system can push a message to your phone through the Notion app, or send an SMS/email with sensor data. The messages can also be routed to family or friends if youre not reachable.

Unlike a lot of hardware Kickstarters, this device already exists and is functional. The campaign will be used to fund testing, refinement, and software development for Notion. The team was only looking for $50,000 to cover these expenses, but the internet has thus far graced them with over $200,000 with over a week left to go.

A single hub and Notion sensor will run you $129, or you can get a hub and three sensors for $199. Both are set for delivery next summer.
