"Learning from vernacular" Exhibition, Madrid 2011
The exhibition at La Arquera de Nuevos Ministerios revolves around vernacular architecture as an alternative solution to many of our current architectural problems: low-cost constructions that adapt to the medium and apply available natural resources in their execution. Organised in two parts, the first one features maquettes on a scale of 1:20 of vernacular builds from all over the world, selected for their execution quality, the way they adapt to the habitat and their contribution to a search for solutions to the housing problem. It is accompanied by photographs by Deidi von Schaewen taken in Africa, Yemen and Indonesia. The second one is a sample of new vernacular architecture showcased through eight contemporary projects produced by architects or architecture schools. Conceived by Pierre Frey, art historian and professor at the cole Polytechnique de Lausanne (EPFL), the show has been organised by the Association pour un Centre Architecture Anthropologie Territoire (ACAAT) in collaboration with the Vitra Design Museum.
