Q: Dear Ed, I have a little extra time off during the holidays, and made a list and checked it twice for some upgrades I need around my house. My question is -- although my plumbing system is working properly, what are some easy plumbing upgrades you recommend to help my home and family? -- Billy, Texas.

A: Here are three basic plumbing upgrades that can usually be completed in about an hour for each project. You should be able to get all the materials at your local home center. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

P.S. I also included a little "holiday cheer" for you at the end of each upgrade.

1. Upgrade your toilet seats: A new toilet seat usually brings a smile to everyone's face. I recommend spending the extra money for a quality seat with some nice features."Bottoms up!"

2. Upgrade your faucet aerators: New faucet aerators can make an old faucet run like new. Also, "high efficiency" aerators can help you save water."Let the good times flow!"

3. Upgrade your showerhead: A new showerhead can change the entire look and feel of your tub/shower area. Some new-style heads even have lights and built-in music systems."Shower your family with love this year!"
