After seven years of receiving the funding from the central government for constructing 856 kitchen sheds in government schools of rural areas in Indore under the midday meal scheme, the project is finally expected to complete after a delay of two years by the end of this year.

The IMC which coordinates between the state government, schools and the local Panchayat had to construct 856 kitchen sheds in government schools for which the ministry of human resource and development had provided funding to the state government in 2006.

There are almost 39 unfinished kitchen sheds in Indore schools which are yet to be completed.

"There were 856 kitchen sheds had to be constructed at the beginning and in 2009-10, we received a list of 200 schools with unfinished kitchen," said midday meal in charge in Indore, Mukesh Verma.

Sources claimed that all such sheds had to be completed within a year from receiving the instructions.

Verma claimed that despite of this delay, Indore is one of the leading districts to have completed the target of constructing all the kitchen sheds in Madhya Pradesh.

"Indore is in the top ten districts in the state where the target is almost achieved," he said. Officials claimed that constantly changing Sarpanch in several villages as well as funding issues were the major impediments for the delay of constructing the sheds.

"Sarpanch of different villages changed during these years as well as many raised issues with the funding of Rs 7,000 for construction per shed which delayed the project," Verma said.
