SAGINAW (WJRT) -

(10/10/13) - Saginaw's landscape is about to get an extreme makeover.

It'll take about a year, but it all starts next week.

That's when Saginaw will begin tearing down nearly one thousand blighted homes.

It's all thanks to a federal grant of more than 11 million dollars.

The city is using federal grant money to knock down 950 blighted homes.

"If we can make it a cleaner city maybe we'll have happier kids, happier kids means less violence," said Effrain Garcia, who lives in Saginaw.

Garcia has been working to mow and clean up vacant lots in the area, so he's thrilled about the upcoming demolition.

It all starts at the corner of Fulton and Fairfax at 10 a.m. Monday morning with six houses owned by the Saginaw County Land Bank Authority.

"The bad guys don't have anywhere to hide anymore in the houses, it's good for public safety," said Tim Novak, Saginaw County treasurer.
