Jeremy Peace, the chairman, operates a "topping up" policy in the New Year and is reluctant to provide further transfer funds after spending almost 12million on Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe in September.

Their summer expenditure means the next appointment at the Hawthorns will be under orders to firefight without any new signings, with fringe players Graham Dorrans and Markus Rosenberg expected to leave in order to trim the squad.

Richard Garlick, the club's sporting and technical director, said: "We exhausted all available resources during the summer window to ensure the squad is as competitive as possible for the season ahead.

"Weve traditionally used the January window for topping up the squad due to injuries or unforeseen circumstances and well be looking to do that via the loan market or short-term deals.

"January will also be a time to reassess the positions of players who may not get regular game time and become surplus to requirements.

"We have a lot of work to do now to ensure we are ready, if necessary, to act in January and were already making plans for the next summer window."

Keith Downing, the joint assistant head coach, and goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely are set to take caretaker charge for this weekend's visit of Hull City.
