25. Elliptical Fountain, Palace of Domitian, Rome
Domitian built the Imperial Palace on the Palatine Hill (the Domus Augustana), continuing work begun by Tiberius, Caligula, and others. Dedicated in AD 92, it is divided into public (Domus Flavia) and private (Domus Augustana) wings. The architect Rabirius was charged with creating spaces that featured Domitian as dominus et deus (lord and god) by situating him in curved niches beneath vaults that were meant to evoke the dome of heaven. The triclinium (dining room) in the Domus Flavia looked out over two elliptical fountains, one of which survives. The fountain #39;s undulating forms, made out of concrete and faced with brick, show Rabirius to be one of Rome #39;s most talented architects, whose approach lives on in the designs of the Canadian American architect, Frank Gehry.From:openyalecourseselectViews:0 0ratingsTime:01:21More inPeople Blogs
