Florida-based Zyscovich Architects has been retained by the Tobago House of Assembly to provide the master plan and design for the new farmers market in Scarborough.

Zyscovich also is preparing the master plan for design of an aquatic center and gymnasium adjacent to the Dwight Yorke Stadium to create a state-of-the-art sports complex, according to a media release and photographs e-mailed to the Tobago News from the company in Miami last week. The market will be situated on a prominent Scarborough site that serves as the gateway to neighbouring cultural and community services, including the Shaw Park Cultural Complex, Scarborough Secondary School and the Tennis Center. In addition to developing an overall master plan for the market, Zyscovich Architects will design a cultural plaza that is open to community use and a mixed-use building that encompasses both offices and concessions. "The placement of the building and its architecture must come together to reinforce the farmers market's stature as the gateway to its neighboring amenities while also creating a marketplace environment that is practical as well as efficient," said Vice President and Principal Jose Murguido. The new farmers market was expected to become a major Scarborough shopping destination, necessitating that traffic and access were primary considerations during the master planning process. The release said the Zyscovich team intended to focus significant attention on the entry plaza at Milford Bypass and Orange Hill to ensure all forms of traffic can be accommodated, including cars, taxis, buses, truck and other commercial vehicles, along with pedestrians. "The building's curved design along its corner location intentionally bifurcates the site and minimises cross traffic between pedestrian and vehicular lanes, enhancing safety and establishing efficient flow patterns," Murguido noted. He added that the main pedestrian market entrance also will be located at the entry plaza to allow easy public access to the building and provide a spacious area where people can gather for cultural activities. Established in 1977, Zyscovich Architects is a nationally renowned integrated urban design, architecture and interior design firm headquartered in downtown Miami with additional locations in West Palm Beach, Orlando, New York City, Bogot and Tobago. The firm is widely recognised as a leader in the design of urban projects as well as development of the urban design methodology entitled Real Urbanismsm. The release said Zyscovich was committed to improving neighborhoods by emphasising sustainable development and economic vitality based on their character and history and the firm's imprint is evident in its full range of projects, from master plans, urban studies and mixed-use urban infill, to transportation design and a wide variety of educational facilities.
