The number of licensed architects in the United States has risen to 107,581, a 1.6 percent jump from 2013, and a 3.1 percent rise from 2011, according to the 2014 Survey of Architectural Registration Boardsconducted by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).

The NCARB annual survey includes the number of architects and reciprocal registrations from July 2013 to June 2014 in 54 U.S. jurisdictions, including the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. California currently has the highest total number of architects at 16,618 and registrations at 20,595, with New York close behind with 9,872 architects and 16,809 registrations.

Our survey documents an architecture profession that is thriving, says Michael J. Armstrong, CEO of NCARB in a release. NCARB will continue to spearhead changes in architectural licensing standards to support a growing architecture industry.

Although there is an increase in the number of licensed architects, the national total of architects that hold reciprocal licenses is 119,200, down 2 percent from 2013.
