Although some March rains have begun greening up the area, curious onlookers couldnt help but ogle over a new shade of green at Beatrice High School.

The $2 million stadiums central feature, a synthetic turf field, began being rolled out Thursday morning. The process will continue over the next 10 days to two weeks, weather permitting.

Symmetry Turf Installation, a Mount Pleasant, Texas company, typically installs 30 synthetic turf fields a year.

Last week, the company installed the Baltimore Ravens indoor practice facility turf. Symmetry Turf Installations resume also includes M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, the Superdome in New Orleans, La., and the HHH Metrodome, home of the Minnesota Vikings.

On Wednesday, the two semi-trucks carrying what will become the field of the stadium unloaded the rolled turf lengths.

After steamrolling the rock base, crews stretched the turf across the field, anchoring it to the ground. By folding the turf back on itself, workers stitched the pieces together from the bottom. They also cut patterns for letters and numbers which will be installed later.

BPS Superintendent Jon Lopez said he received reports of plenty of interested onlookers driving out to the high school to see the progress made Thursday.

Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks, well get to see some more progress, Lopez said.

Currently, the substantial completion date of the project is May 1.

We want to make sure all of the elements that we are promising that are going to be in the project are done and done correctly, Lopez said. The substantial completion date is May 1 but were discussing extending that. We dont want to rush anyone.
