Handyman: All abuzz about bees -

Q: While cleaning gutters recently, I saw what appeared to be many bumblebees going in and out of a space on the fascia, possibly into the attic area. They came out like a swarm, landing on my face. I believe these were some type of bumblebee, but I could be wrong. I sprayed insecticide, but what now? How do I make sure they are dead? Should I caulk the hole or fill it with expanding insulating foam?
A: Don't use insecticides. Bees are beneficial, because they are pollinators. Fill the holes with adhesive caulk and/or replace the damaged wood.
Q: We have a forced-air heating and air-conditioning system. I see ads all the time for air-duct cleaning. My heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning company doesn't do it, and they have said that such cleaning can damage the ducts. Do you have an opinion?
A: If your ductwork is more than 25 years old, it's a good idea to have it cleaned. Sure, damage can occur, but it's rare and reputable companies will fix it. My own ducts are 50 years old, and were they ever stuffed with dirt, crud, and you name it. I had them cleaned, and they'll be good for another 25 years or so. Do it!
Q: I just bought an old bureau with four drawers at a house sale. I cleaned the outside with Murphy Oil Soap, and it looks good. However, when you rub the inside of the drawers with a light cloth, an orange stain comes off on it. I'm wondering what is the best and most authentic thing to do with the drawers (short of covering them with contact paper) to protect the clothes that will be put in them.
A: The inside is bare wood, so wash it with paint thinner (using the proper ventilation and protection, of course) to get rid of the staining. Then leave it alone. If the staining continues, try more paint thinner. When the staining stops, do nothing more with the wood. If the staining does not stop, it's time for good ol' contact paper.
Q: We have a house built in 1925 that has a granite-block foundation. Our problem is that we are getting a leak in one corner when it rains, and it appears that the mortar or cement between the stones is the source. There is a gutter above that corner, and I have tried to divert water away from the house. Any suggestions on how to repair this situation without digging a trench and installing a pump?
A: I think water is coming through those degraded joints between the blocks. Keeping water away via gutters is also good. To fill those places that have lost mortar, you can repoint, chipping out old mortar and pressing in new. A mason can do this, but you can, too, but be aware that it is heavy work. If it is successful and stops leaks above the floor, then you can tackle ground water that is coming up between the floor slab and block wall.

CHARLOTTE -- The Better Business Bureau is warning people of an air duct cleaning company posing as Morris-Jenkins.
The company operates under many different names, including A-1 Any Time Duct Cleaning, Green Air Care and ABC Green Air Care and has scammed dozens of Charlotte-area customers out of thousands of dollars.
"They're trying to evade being caught, evade responding to complaints," said Maryanne Dailey with the Better Business Bureau. "Green Air is not even located in our area."
But Morris-Jenkins has been in Charlotte since 1958, and the Green Air Care business is using the company's good reputation to gain victims' trust.
"I felt that the customers were being taken advantage of, and in many cases it's our elderly customers," said Dewey Jenkins, owner of Morris-Jenkins. "This is a despicable bunch of people who would even consider doing this."
Jenkins sent a letter to customers this week, warning them of the scam.
If you need work done in your home, the Better Business Bureau recommends getting multiple bids from different companies, asking for references and making sure the company has the proper licensing and permits.
Also, they say do not be pressured into setting up an appointment at your home by anyone who calls.

This is the mother of all hacks, the genius device that saved the Apollo XIII crew from dying in their emergency return to Earth, as photographed during that trip using one of their Hasselblad cameras. Here are the actual step-by-step instructions that helped turn this mission into NASA's most successful failure ever.
After Mission Control decided to cancel Apollo XIII's moon landing following an explosion of an oxygen tank in the Service Module, the astronauts moved to the Lunar Module in order to save power that was going to be needed later for re-entry.
The only problem with this plan was that the Lunar Module was designed for only two people for a 36-hour period, not three astronauts for 96 hours. They quickly discovered that carbon dioxide was building up fast, putting their lives in extreme danger. They had to change the circular CO2 scrubbers in the Lunar Module for clean ones, but they only had spare square CO2 scrubbers from the Command Module.
In record time, the Crew Systems Division put together an improvised adapter using all sort of weird and random parts, like a flight manual cover, suit parts, and socks. CAPCOM (Capsule Communicator) transmitted the instructions to the astronauts in order to assemble this "mailbox" rigas they called itworking against the clock and trying to surive fight the effects of the poisonous gas which was quickly asphyxiating their brains.
This procedure, which takes approximately one hour to complete, will allow the fitting of a square Odyssey Command Module (CM) scrubber filter through the Aquarius Lunar Module's (LM) round mounted filtration hole and will modify the Environmental Systems scrubber unit. The material is for astronauts to use when CO2 scrubbers fail in the CM, all CM filters are used or in other situations where additional scrubbing of CO2 is required. Crew Systems Division assembled and tested this information.
All required equipment is contained onboard within the Apollo 13 CM and LM.
Cover to the Apollo 13 flight plan (to cover and protect the hose entry)
