Our dishwasher broke. It simply stopped halfway through the wash cycle, leaving only a blinking red light indicating either a drain or a pump was malfunctioning. Thats not something to write about in a newspaper column. (Before you say it, no, not even for me.) But it happened in early October, almost three months ago.
Because my wife and I are so busy with work these days, and I am so cheap, I put off getting a repairman to come to the house. Instead, weve spent the weeks since washing dishes by hand, using the dishwasher as a glorified dish drainer. At first, I told my wife I would take a look at it myself, but that was really just a stalling tactic. I kind of hoped wed all get used to doing dishes by hand, and shed just forget. That worked all through October.
My wife didnt get used to it. When she finally had enough and said she was just going to call the repairman herself, I did what I always do in these situations. I got out my tools, spread them out across the floor, and then took apart the offending appliance. Then, step-by-step, I reassembled it, stepped back, and stared at it. (Every once in a while, this works. Ive completely dismantled our washing machine, vacuum, and lawn mower, all to great effect.)
But thats not what happened in this case. I reattached the last piece, stepped back, closed the door, pressed the button, and waited. The same maddening, blinking light. Somewhere inside there, a drain and/or a pump was not draining and/or pumping the way it ought to. All this effort did, however, buy me another week.
A week later, I looked it up on the Internet and found that unnamed experts said what you had to do in these situations was order a special pump unsticking tool from the manufacturer, insert it into the works and twist. The picture looked a whole lot like a barbecue fork. So logically (I thought) I spent most of that weekend looking for our barbecue fork. When I finally found it, stuck it into the works and twisted like the unnamed experts said, nothing happened. Another week down.
The next weekend, I called the dishwasher company and talked to a real expert, the person who walks homeowners through crises. I explained to her that I needed the unsticking tool, as I had already stuck a barbecue fork into the works to see what happened, and it didnt help. There was an extended silence on the line. Finally, she sighed and said, in a low, serious voice, OK, sir? Thats not smart. I let it go, as she must be under a lot of pressure.
The first thing the expert lady asked me was how much soap we used in the dishwasher. I told her and she sighed again and told me we use too much soap and probably clogged up the machine. I said I never washed the dishes myself, and it was my wifes fault. The expert lady sighed again and told me blaming your wife for things is really not smart.
She walked me through all the steps. It was like one of those movies where a schlub has to be talked through dismantling a bomb. She barked out orders: Press On/Off. Immediately press Start/Stop three times! No, faster than that! Thats right! Now press Rinse/Hold. How many times! Once! OK ... Once! Now do it again! Thats technically twice! Stop interrupting! Now Stop! What? Stop doing it? No! Press Stop! Now! Now!
Finally, after 20 minutes, she sighed and told me it would take a week, but I needed the unsticking tool. I bit my tongue. Who was the smart one now?
When the unsticking tool arrived, it really did look very much like a barbecue fork. The next weekend, I took out all the racks, stuck the tool into the works and twisted. It seemed jammed up, but then, after a few twists, it felt like something happened.
