PAM Sabah celebrates World Architecture Day
KOTA KINABALU: Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) Sabah Chapter organised a Design Conference in conjunction with the World Architecture Day 2014.
The event on Oct 29 was attended by PAM Council President, Chan Seong Ann, local architects, engineers, surveyors and representatives from the various local authorities here.
According to PAM Chairman Victor Wong, who was also the Organising Chairman of the event, World Architecture Day is a worldwide event held over the month of October each year since 2012, and it aims to bring together architects, planners, engineers and designers to exchange ideas and showcase award-winning works.
The inaugural World Architecture Day was held in London in 2012 with the theme "Architects are Cities Changers" while the second one was in New York in 2013, with the theme "Culture - Architecture".
Wong added that the theme this year was "Healthy Cities, Happy Cities" and it raised awareness on how architects can design healthy spaces, facilities, housing and urban landscape which foster happiness, health and quality of life.
Three accomplished guest speakers from the international architectural fraternity had been invited by PAM Sabah Chapter to present topics relating to sustainable architecture, the importance of design analysis in modern architecture, religious buildings from an architectural perspective as well as inspiring a change of mindsets about built environments through good architectural design.

Architects are too often treated in the popular press as artists who build spectacular new buildings intended to amaze you.
Their designs make for dramatic photography and get the most attention.
But in the real world sometimes the most satisfying results occur when architects put their hand to existing buildings, inventively enhancing the beauty and utility of what is already here.
That has been demonstrated amply this year as seen in the roster of awards given last week by the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Of 15 major awards, nine were for top-quality additions or renovations.
A stand-out in the awards and one with lessons that any building committee at any church or school can find relevant was the wholesale re-imagining of a Catholic church and its long-closed adjacent school building in Carnegie by Lami Grubb Architects.
Carnegie is one of many towns in Western Pennsylvania where Catholic schools have closed and parishes have been consolidated over the years. And St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish today is made up of what were once a half dozen parishes that served the borough.
To accommodate the expanded needs for the one remaining church building, the architects situated a large and brightly lit new narthex/entranceway (topped with a pyramidal skylight) between what was originally the back of the 1880s church and its school building.
Then, they quite literally turned the church around on the inside. Where the altar once stood became a broad new glass entranceway, accessed from the new narthex. And what was once the main entrance and front facade of the church became the back wall behind a new very modern altar.
The church sits on a corner, making this switch both possible and appealing.
They needed to make only minimal changes to blend the exteriors of the two buildings with the modern addition between them, and only a few changes inside the school building to convert it to offices and meeting rooms.

Reuse of spaces aided by good design
The San Dieguito Lagoon master plan won a special award for urban solutions.

Winding up San Diego's first "Archtoberfest" celebrating local architecture, the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects handed out 31 Design Awards Thursday, ranging from grand monumental landmarks like the new downtown Central Library to a modest infill lawyer's office.
Three outside jurors looked over 67 entries before bestowing five honor awards, five merit awards, three citations and 16 special category awards. The awards were announced at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union at San Diego State University.
Two individual awards also were announced -- the young architect of the year, J. Antonio Garcia, and the patron of the year, JMI Realty, which oversaw the development of Petco Park and the ballpark district downtown.
Brian Dougherty , an architect with offices in Costa Mesa and Oakland and this year's president of the AIA California Council, said the jury focused on how projects adhered to the "program" or purpose dictated by the builder or owner.

"I was very impressed with the quality of design," Dougherty said. "I loved the diversity of scale and types of projects, and overall I thought especially the sensitivity to sustainability and creating buildings appropriate to their site was very high."
The awards come at a time of slow but steady improvement in the development climate after several years in the doldrums following the financial meltdown of 2008.

Architects West to design NIC tech ed facility
The Coeur dAlene-based firm Architects West has been chosen by a committee to design the $15 million, 100,000-square-foot North Idaho College Career Technical Education Facility in Rathdrum.
Architects West was chosen out of six local and regional firms by a search committee comprised of NIC representatives, community members and NIC Board of Trustees Ron Nilson and Judy Meyer. Architects West has over $1 billion in constructed educational facilities. The firm has designed nine projects for NIC, 15 for the University of Idaho, 48 for the Coeur dAlene School District, 27 for the Post Falls School District and 16 for the Lakeland School District.
One of the areas that stood out for Architects West during the selection process was their understanding of the importance of schedule and budget to the success of this project, said Chris Martin, NIC Vice President for Finance and Business Affairs and search committee member. They also have assembled a project team that was able to articulate their understanding of the need for a facility design that will meet the needs of students and serve industry training needs in North Idaho for many years to come.
In June, the NIC Board of Trustees decided to locate the facility on 40 acres already owned by the college in Rathdrum adjacent to the Kootenai Technical Education Campus (KTEC). NIC intends to use $11.5 million of its Capital Reserve Fund, $2.5 million in operating reserves and $1 million in tax anticipation notes to pay for the new facility. The facility will house several NIC professional-technical programs that are currently in temporary and/or tight quarters. The facility is scheduled for completion by July 2016.
