The city of Jericho sits in the hot, flat Jordan Valley down the hill from Jerusalem. Jericho has bragging rights as one of the oldest towns on Earth. But one of its newest homes looks like it might have arrived from outer space.
Ahmad Daoud hired a firm of young Palestinian architects to build this house. Like Jericho's original homes, it is built of dirt. This one has a contemporary twist, though: It's constructed with earth compacted in bags that are then stacked and plastered over.
Daoud loves the domed rooms, the nod to the past and the environmental advantages.
"It's an environmentally friendly house," he says. "I can tear it down and nothing will remain. In the summer, I don't need air conditioning, and in the winter, I don't need heat."

Amid the dust, palms and the square, concrete houses of Jericho, Daoud's home stands out. Daoud says everybody has something to say about it.
"A lot of neighbors say it's nice to look at but not to live in," he says.

Scott Radcliff, AIA, ACHA, NCARB, LEED AP, project architect for Hasenstab Architects, has received the American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) Board Certification in healthcare architecture. This certification is earned by architects specializing in healthcare design.
Radcliff, who has been with Hasenstab Architects since 2009, has more than 12 years of healthcare design experience specializing in simulation design, pediatric and neonatal environments, and facility planning. ACHA certification has always been a professional goal of his, Radcliff said.
Throughout my career, Ive had the privilege to work alongside multiple members of the ACHA, Radcliff said. Through my interactions with each of them and their mentoring, I developed a great respect for their high level of expertise and passion for healthcare design. I consider it an honor to join them in their pursuit to improve healthcare environments.
Radcliff has served as project architect for a variety of healthcare projects including Ashland University College of Nursing Simulation Design Center and the Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare Campus Expansion. Most recently, Radcliff worked on the $180 million Critical Care Tower for Akron Childrens Hospital.
My experiences working on projects at Akron Childrens have allowed me to refine my planning, design, detailing, and operational understanding of these types of facilities, Radcliff said. As both a parent and a healthcare architect, I empathize with the customers and bring a unique perspective to the design of neonatal and pediatric spaces.
The ACHA provides Board Certification for architects who practice as healthcare specialists. In order to become ACHA certified, candidates must provide extensive documentation outlining their experience, multiple peer and client references, as well as pass a computer-based examination to demonstrate their skills and knowledge level.

POPOV Bass Architects has taken out the award for the best new house in NSW with a home in Griffith.
Alex Popov and Brian Bass' design, which was built by Forlico Builders, won the state's annual Wilkinson Award.
Judge and jury chair Virginia Kerridge said the planning for the house was calm and rational.
"The overriding sense within is of tranquility," she said.
Mr Popov and Mr Bass needed to build a home that could accommodate visiting children and grandchildren, along with the owners' art collection on a rural farm on the south eastern fringe of the city.
There were challenges in coming up with the perfect design.
"This was a tough, hard environment," Mr Bass said.
The 11.3 hectare site was flood-zoned and almost dead flat on a red soil plain.

AN AWARD-winning Malton architects is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an exhibition of previous projects.
Bramhall Blenkharn Architects was established in York in 1994, and has grown to be one of the leading practices in the region, winning over 60 national and international design awards and being responsible for over 1,000 projects across the North of England.
The practice was formed when Mark Bramhall joined Ric Blenkharn in partnership and the pair were later joined by Patrick Cuddy as director moving to Malton in 2000.
They now employ eight members of staff and this year has won four further awards for their work as well as being shortlisted for The Sunday Times House of the Year Award for a new home in Harrogate.
To mark the 20th anniversary Bramhall Blenkharn is holding an exhibition at the City Screen in York until June 29.
Director Ric Blenkharn, said: "We have completed over 1,000 projects across the region, probably representing over 100M worth of construction work. Clearly this has made a major contribution to the local industry. and we have been delighted to work with numerous clients during that time and grateful for entrusting their projects to us.
"We have been delighted to win our recent awards, recognising the contribution of clients, contractors and suppliers in achieving these projects.
He added: "We would like to thank all those people who have supported us in various ways over the past 20 years, and look forward to a continuing relationship in the future."
