Noble salvages - May 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A kitchen bench made from a recycled bowling alley.

The bespoke chandelier suspended above the Cubo house's new central stairwell could be called ''staircase descending a staircase''. Like Duchamp's cubist painting Nude Descending a Staircase - mocked by one art critic as ''an explosion in a shingle factory'' - the house's old staircase has been ''detonated'' and abstracted. Part of Phooey Architects' latest ''upcycling'' project, the demolished former staircase now hangs in fragments, transformed into a chandelier.

There are two approaches to adapting and reusing existing buildings and materials, Phooey co-director Peter Ho explains. They can perform the same function, such as pulling out a window and simply reusing it as a window. Or materials can be given new life and an alternative function. ''That's where it fits into upcycling,'' he says.

''Generally, the industry knocks something down, sends it to somebody else and it's recycled,'' Ho says. ''What we try to do is keep things on site. Our whole perspective is to demonstrate that we can take responsibility for the things that we consume.''

A chandelier made from a staircase.

Pushing the tattered envelope of salvage materials, Ho and his partner, Emma Young, transform balustrades into door handles, form whole walls with salvaged windows, and ''upcycle'' security screens into sun-shading devices and external screens. Meanwhile the brick walls of the extended building envelope have been recycled and reframed as cubes, a nod to the surrealist cut-up technique ''cubomania'' that inspires the firm's approach to recycling.

Breathe Architecture also employs the cut-up technique in the foyer of its Commons apartments in Brunswick. Like Phooey's Cubo house, the Commons is a notable entrant in this year's Victorian Architecture Awards.

''The old blond brick warehouse on Anstey station was totally covered with graffiti,'' Breathe design director Jeremy McLeod says. Bricks salvaged when the building was demolished were reused in the lobby, making a virtue of the graffiti.

HOUSTON Katy ISD trustees approved VLK Architects to provide design services associated with elementary school #38 within Cinco Ranch Northwest Subdivision and elementary school #39 adjacent to Ventana Lakes Subdivision. The new elementary campuses will be designed to accommodate 1,030 students in grades pre-K through 5thgrade to address the increased growth occurring in Katy ISD.

According to VLK Principal Todd Lien, AIA, VLK looks forward to working with Katy ISD administrators and staff to develop plans for the new elementary schools, and provide the growing Katy community with age-appropriate, student-centric learning environments that are flexible, sustainable, secure and integrated with the latest technology to serve the needs of the next generation of learners.

VLK previously participated in a 21stCentury Learning Symposium hosted by the District to discuss ideas and examples of learning environments that are being designed and built in districts around the country and the state. Among the many items that were discussed were how these concepts could be designed into new schools for Katy ISD.

Call for building fraternity to work together for sustainability - May 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

KOTA KINABALU: Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah called on property developers, architects, designers, suppliers and builders to work together and commit to achieving the goal of sustainability through education, discipline and proper organizational planning.

Yong, when launching IPEX 2014 at Sabah Trade Centre yesterday, said architects could be pioneers in bringing about greater awareness of sustainability in the building industry and at the same time could influence all strata of the construction industry to adopt new approaches and practices towards green building and urban planning.

The property exhibition, which is organized by Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) Sabah Chapter, will be held until Sunday.

The government fully supports the effort by PAM Sabah Chapter to play an active role towards bringing greater awareness among the players of the building industry. IPEX 2014 is one such example.

We share many similar objectives with PAM Sabah Chapter to encourage more sustainable development throughout Sabah, in particular here in our city Kota Kinabalu. We hope through our collaboration and concrete efforts, we can disseminate our ideas and vision to the general public for a better future for our city, he said.

Yong added that IPEX had established itself firmly within the building fraternity and the local residents as the premier building trade show in Sabah.

It has become an annual event that is much anticipated and eagerly awaited by all sectors of allied and related industries.

Touching on the exhibitions theme, Liveable Cities, Sustainable Cities, Yong said the earth is in a state of needing great attention as the people in this era are living in challenging times.

Natural disasters are being unleashed unexpectedly, causing much distress. The rise in global temperature, coupled with natural disasters, give rise to many challenges and people across the globe must undertake and overcome them with boldness.

At the same time, we are witnessing a mass migration of rural population to the urban centres. It is estimated that 50 per cent of the seven billion world population today live in urban areas, and this figure will rise 70 per cent of the nine billion world population by 2050.

Architects behind Tate Modern chosen to design new Vancouver Art Gallery - April 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron among the worlds leading designers has been selected to design a new Vancouver Art Gallery. The firm will have two themes: building for art, and making downtown work better.

HdM, which designed Beijings Birds Nest Olympic stadium and Londons Tate Modern gallery, beat four other firms on the VAGs shortlist, propelled by a record of designing great museums and a vision to create a building that will suit its location.

In a phone interview, Christine Binswanger, a senior partner at the firm who will lead the project, said they want the gallery to represent Vancouvers astonishing combination of a very urban life and a natural setting. But she said it also has a job to do. Its a site that needs to connect in an interesting way Gastown with Yaletown.

At approximately 300,000 square feet, the proposed new gallery will more than double the space of the current facility a former provincial courthouse in the heart of downtown renovated by Arthur Erickson. In the years of debate over a new VAG, many said the current facility is in a better location. Ms. Binswanger said the new building a few blocks east on a parking lot site known as Larwill Park will change that perception.

I know that the museum is currently in a very privileged position in the city. People right now think this new site is difficult. But thats what makes the project interesting, I think, for us and for the gallery: to really create a new place in town.

HdM has a record of designing strong museum and gallery spaces. Theyre artists architects, gallery director Kathleen Bartels said in an interview. Theyve worked with artists for their entire professional career and they know what that means.

In addition to the Tate Modern which had an enormous impact on London and its contemporary art scene HdM has also designed the new Perez Art Museum Miami and the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island. Pacific Rim projects include the de Young Museum in San Franciscoand the Prada Aoyama in Tokyo.

When you look at some of their buildings I think the Tate Moderns a wonderful example people want to be there, Ms. Bartels said. We want to create spaces like that where people can have those wow moments, looking at amazing artwork in extraordinary architecture, and want to hang out there whether theyre 14 or theyre 45. I think that is what we want the gallery to be. And I think they understand the gallery of the future.

Should the project be realized, the new Vancouver Art Gallery will be the Pritzker Prize-winning firms first building in Canada.

Herzog & de Meuron, founded in 1978 in Basel by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, emerged as the unanimous choice from a short list of five, including Torontos KPMB Architects; Tokyos SANAA; and New York-based firms Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. The selection process included in-depth interviews with each firm as well as a whirlwind tour where committee members took in candidates projects in Paris, Miami, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Toronto
