ARCHITECTS have outlined radical new plans for the future of the civic centre in Barnstaple.

Following last weeks Gazette front page story about North Devon District Councils plans to vacate the Devon County Council-owned building, local property experts say the riverside spot could provide much-needed homes in the area.

Barnstaple based Peregrine Mears Architects believe it could provide up to 84 apartments, as well as community facilities including a gym, fitness studio, crche, meeting rooms and a rooftop caf on the second floor.

It is envisaged that the car park along the riverside could be enhanced with planting and landscaping and there is even an idea to create rooftop gardens for residents.

Practice director Peregrine Mears said: While there is not a lot of love locally for the civic centre, maybe the time is right to consider an alternative use that will take the building into the 21st century.

We believe the building is capable of conversion to residential use. We have looked at the possibility of this in principle and believe it is achievable.

Michigan House Envy: Mansion had 2 architects, 22,000 hours of carpentry work - March 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

How much personal effort went into this house? So much that the owners hired two architects one who designed the house and one who just planned the woodwork.

The owners also played major roles. Carrying blueprints, they traveled to antique dealers, auction houses, salvage shops in town or out of town, it didnt matter. They shopped online, bought pieces on eBay.

In the 2 years they were building the house finished in 2005, now listed at $5.4 million their finds filled their basement and two climate-controlled storage units with stained glass, leaded glass, chandeliers, sconces, fireplaces.

Meanwhile, the house plans morphed around their treasures. For example, they found the large, lighted dome of stained glass that now lights the center of the foyer. That dome was not part of the original plan, the owner said. But when we found it, it just changed the whole house.

Similarly in the living room, the coffered ceiling was designed around antique stained glass they found salvaged from a Chicago theater which they wanted to turn into a light for the pool table. The same with the fireplace mantels, the owner said. The house was adjusted around the pieces we bought.

Back up a minute pool table in the living room?

Yes. For all its grand details, the house is geared for their big, active family four grown kids and 11 grandkids, all living nearby. Theres no precious dont-touch room reserved for royalty.

That includes the kitchen, an inviting country French space big enough for the whole gang to hang out. Theres also a large playroom with multiple bunk beds for sleepovers and a wooden play structure out back.

Throughout this house, though, the dominant feature is massive mahogany woodwork. Not only did this woodwork have its own architect, by the owners count, it took 22,000 hours of carpentry.

Second to that is the extensive plasterwork. Halls, main rooms, even some minor rooms have barrel ceilings, tray ceilings, etched plaster or carved plaster. Then there are the doors mahogany and the windows, many stained, beveled or leaded.

Slideshow: Amsterdam architects start printing a 3D canal house - February 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Amsterdam firm DUS architects started printing the first building blocks of a 3D-printed canal house Friday.

In order to do that, the architects bought a shipping container and with the help of 3D-printer maker Ultimaker they converted it into a huge version of a desktop 3D printer. That larger-than-life 3D printer sits on a vacant lot beside a canal in the northern part of Amsterdam. If everything goes well, it will be the home of the first printed canal house within the next three years.

The plan is for the front of the house to measure 15 meters high, 6 meters wide and 6 meters deep, while adding a back to the house of the same size if possible within the same time frame.

The container-sized printer is called KamerMaker, which is Dutch for room builder. It uses bioplastic pellets of a material called Macromelt that is based on rapeseed oil. It was developed by Henkel, a company based in Dsseldorf, Germany, that manufactures adhesives for the electronics industry, said Hedwig Heinsman, co-founder of DUS architects. Macromelt can easily be shredded and reused when a piece doesnt come out the right way, she said.

That is convenient because the first blocks probably wont make it to the house, said Hans Vermeulen, one of the other co-founders. The first blocks are meant to be test pieces to learn where the faults in the construction of the blocks are, he said.

A 3-meter high block currently takes about a week to complete. Eventually, we would like to be able to finish one within two hours, said Vermeulen.

The 3-meter high block being printed Friday indeed showed errors when it was only a couple of centimeters high. The printer did not always manage to spread the Macromelt evenly, making some of the ribs of the honeycomb structure of the block uneven. Those errors eventually will be straightened out in a printed block and dont really affect the strength of the structure, according to Vermeulen.

Maybe in three years we will have printed the house four times, upgrading the house based on the gained knowledge, he said, adding that printing a house is still a process of trial and error.

DUS architects is planning to finish the first of 13 planned rooms this summer. Meanwhile, the site will remain open to the public during the building process and those interested can take a look around for 2.50 (US$3.45).
