TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sep 19, 2013) - This past weekend Mortgage Architects held it's national conference in Montreal, Quebec. The conference was attended by over 300 Brokers, Lenders and Sponsors and touted to be the best yet. "That was one of the best conferences I have ever attended. When I arrived I was amazed at how few people I knew and when I left I was even more amazed at how many I got to know. It was a perfect mix of work and play and I feel very fortunate to be apart of such a dynamic group of people." Said Mortgage Architects Broker Kelly Curtis.
This year's conference theme was THINK.ACT.EVOLVE and focused on empowering brokers to actively think their way through a changing environment and ultimately act in ways that will contribute to their professional evolution. The conference opened with a video featuring Mortgage Architects cartoon broker Matthew Meinerson-Smith (originally built to test business cards and template dimensions) and costarred Mortgage Architects RVPs circling the country asking brokers some key questions relating to the conference theme. The theme was pervasive around the room both visually and incorporated into the speaker's presentations.
Made possible by sponsorship from key lenders and partners, sessions featured Fiona Cleghorn of Genworth, Jeff Quipp, CEO of Search Engine People and Scott Stratten, author of UnMarketing and The Business of Awesome. Day one concluded with a celebration at Newtown where First National Sponsored an exclusive event that went well into the night. Day 2 opened on a high note with a video of the outtakes from the original footage and a shout out to the Newtown event. Day 2 also featured Broker and Alternate Lender panels with the day closing on a highnote with a presentation from Ron Swift, CEO of the Pacific Mortgage Group and Albert Collu, President of Mortgage Architects.
"This was one of the best weekends I have had in my life! I have come away with so much inspiration and information. Meeting so many people from all over Canada was so amazing J It was a truly wonderful event!" said Mortgage Architects Broker Monica Macdonald. WHR Architects has opened its first European office in Copenhagen, Denmark. The decision to locate in the Danish capital was spurred by the Danish healthcare systems initiative to renew and expand their facilities across the country.
We have been engaged with representatives from the Danish healthcare system for nearly two years, said Anthony Haas, FAIA, FACHA, the WHR principal who is responsible for the office. The more we understood their mission and observed their dedication and rigor in researching state-of-the-art healthcare facilities, the more we wanted to be part of their efforts. Opening a local office was the logical next step and we are excited to be here.
Haas first met a Danish healthcare team on a study mission to the United States at an American College of Healthcare Architects conference in 2011. As a result of that meeting, WHR helped to organize a visit to Houston to tour the newest hospital and research facilities in the world-renowned Texas Medical Center as well as benchmarking visits to other notable medical facilities in the U.S.
WHRs interest in the Danish healthcare initiative and their support as we researched best-of-class facilities demonstrated WHRs deep understanding of the issues and their collegial approach, notes Adam Trier Jacobsen, MAA, DA, FRICS, the Danish architect who first met with Haas and who is now working with WHR. After our visits in the States, we invited WHR to come to Denmark to study the healthcare initiative and to see the current facilities first-hand.
Those initial meetings revealed a mutual interest in developing a new international model for healthcare facilities that would leverage not only WHRs expertise and resources but also the strengths of leading thinkers and designers from many critical disciplines and multiple countries including Denmark. While we believe our experience and expertise offers great value to the Danish healthcare system, we recognize that we have much to learn from the European architects and engineers whose work consistently earns them commissions and accolades worldwide, said David Watkins, FAIA, chairman and founding principal of WHR Architects.
Having made the commitment to establish a presence in Denmark, WHR lost no time in finding opportunities to contribute to the development of the new healthcare model. In August, WHR, teamed with Denmarks Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and the international engineering team ARUP, garnered a coveted spot on the shortlist for the second phase of the design completion for the Nyt Hospital Nordsjlland, a 124,000-square-meter (1.31 million square foot) acute care hospital in Hillerd.
WHR was also awarded a contract for the design of the new laboratory and logistics building at Bispebjerg Hospital near Copenhagen as part of a team that includes the Danish firm Mikkelsen Architects and ARUP. That project brings together 14,000 square meters (150,694 square feet) of clinical and research laboratory spaces together under one roof. In addition to laboratories, the new building will contain logistics warehouse facilities, teaching facilities, and a central biorepository. The logistics warehouse facilities will be designed to serve the future somatic hospital.
The firms recent successes are testament to the concept that bringing together the most innovative and experienced design professionals to create next generation healthcare facilities is what is needed and has earned the attention of decision-makers at two of Denmarks leading healthcare facilities. Haas and Jacobsen concur that the highly collaborative, multidiscipline model, leverages the international perspectives and experience of all team members and is the future for large scale, complex medical and research facilities.
As Haas observed, Visionary clients are raising the bar on what facilities can be and what they can deliver. They are demanding the same of their consultants and the only way to help achieve those forward leaning goals is to collaborate with the best talent wherever they call home.

HEATH, TX--(Marketwired - Sep 18, 2013) - Fund Architects LLC, a provider of dynamic asset allocation portfolios designed for a broad range of investors, has released a white paper based on the firm's research into global asset allocation.
The paper -- "Asset Allocation with a Global Mandate: Intelligently Expanding the Efficient Frontier" -- thoughtfully describes the risks and rewards of including non-U.S. securities in an asset allocation portfolio.
The paper's primary author, Fund Architect's Co-CIO J.C. Waller, says the report is designed to help both financial advisors and their clients understand the rewards readily available to them from a global investment strategy.
"It's easy to show how dramatically the global opportunity set that resides outside of the U.S. has increased over time," says Waller. "Investors can, and should, benefit from the growth occurring in foreign countries."
Fund Architects' research shows that while the reasons for investing in international markets are many, the key benefits for a global approach right now include:
The paper also speaks to key considerations in the current global marketplace and ways investors can implement a global asset allocation strategy.
"In today's environment, there are many reasons investors and advisors should be allocating assets using a global framework," says Waller. "The evidence indicates that including foreign securities with domestic securities in a global portfolio not only reduces risk, it can enhance returns."

Martian bases could be built on the red planet by robots excavating underground caves, a group of German architects has claimed.
The team from ZA Architects believes that basalt, already detected on the red planet by rovers, could be used as a building material to create large underground caves and create a martian cement.
The surface of Mars is primarily composed of basalt, and the Phoenix lander directly sampled water ice in Martian soil, the team say.

Developers and architects are launching a project they say will transform a part of Northeast Portland from a commuter destination to a round-the-clockneighborhood.
San Diego-based American Asset Trust is breaking ground on a four-block project anchored by more than 650 units of housing. The company is working with Portlands GBDArchitects.
Architect Kyle Anderson said the goal is to put housing and a grocery store into the LloydDistrict.
But also to reinvigorate this neighborhood to become a community, he said. Its not intended to be another Pearl District or South Waterfront, but merely an extension of the existing neighborhoods that is, and was, in thepast.
The project has high environmentalgoals.

DePaul president Dennis H. Holtschneider unveills the arena plan to the media May 16.
Major progress was made over the summer regarding the new DePaul arena in the South Loop, as plans to find an architectural firm to design the arena took shape.
In the process of finding a lead architect, a three-man panel composed of veteran architects was chosen by the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority Group, also known as McPier. Joe Caprile, Tom Ventulett and Thomas Beeby have advised a nine-member panel made up of three representatives from McPier, DePaul and the city respectively.
After the panel was formed, the group narrowed down six firms to oversee the project.
The final firms in the running are John Rohan Architects, Krucek + Sexon Architects, Ross Barney Architects, Grimshaw Architects, Rotterdam and Clark Pelli Architects.
Its a very good list. This is not the usual suspects when it comes to stadium design, Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin said. These are very talented firms. We can expect some outof- the-box design solutions from them.
DePaul athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto added that opinions about who should take on the job are beginning to come clear. Were at the point right now where everyone kind of has their ideas about who their number one option is. I think there was a lot of excitement, and the proposals were just great.
