Atlantic Media has lost one of the chief architects of its digital reinvention, as president Justin Smith has accepted a new job running Bloombergs media group, according to a report in the New York Times that was later confirmed by the magazine and by Smith. The Atlantic executive was hired in 2007 by Atlantic owner David Bradley and is widely credited with helping to reverse the financial fortunes of the once struggling 156-year-old publication by expanding aggressively on the web and launching a number of new ventures.
In a letter to Atlantic staff, Bradley paid tribute to Smiths contribution to the magazine, saying he and the team that he assembled accomplished a reversal of fortune for a magazine in a 60-year decline [and] a doubling of revenues as well as a return to profitability, the launch of new properties including Atlantic Cities, AtlanticWire and Quartz, a growing events business and 25 million monthly Atlantic readers and visitors. Said Bradley:
Justins beliefs were fierce: That the revolution underway in media is more radical than we the industry appreciate. That the contest between legacy and insurgent players is mortal, with advantage to the insurgents. That surviving legacy properties will have had to learn the disciplines of the insurgents and that they can.
Smith, a former head of corporate strategy for The Economist and a co-founder of Breaking Media a group of sites including Above The Law and Fashionista will take over as CEO of Bloomberg Media Group from Andrew Lack, who becomes chairman, and will report to Daniel Doctoroff, Bloombergs chief executive. Doctoroff told the New York Times: We know that every part of media is being disrupted by technology, and we need someone who understands that.
The announcement of Smiths departure from Atlantic Media also brought tributes from a number of media-industry observers, including Googles Eric Schmidt, who told the New York Times:
How many people have really managed to be successful in digital media? Everyone has tried and few have been successful. Justin is one of them. He is moving very fast, but this is the next logical step. Its a serious gain for Bloomberg.
In addition to launching new digital ventures, The Atlantic has also been one of the most prominent proponents of sponsored content as an alternative to traditional advertising a move that got the magazine into hot water when it ran a widely-criticized feature on Scientology. Smith talked about this and other monetization strategies during a panel about monetization alternatives at our paidContent Live conference in April, which is embedded below.

Boris Johnson's plans for an island airport on the Thames might sound ambitious, but these drawings prove the idea has been at least 80 years in the making.
Vintage architects' designs unearthed today show how floating hubs like 'Boris Island', with at least four runways, were already being planned in the 1930s.
The Mayor of London has been demanding the grand idea of an island airport made out of landfill with superfast links to London.
Brave New York world: This 1931 design for the centre of the Big Apple shows how airport docks should be built for the metropolis

Architects to listen to MLK ideas -

As Night Hoops wrap up for the summer at the Martin Luther King Center, participants will have the chance to share their ideas for a new facility.
Saturdays special event, a focus session hosted by Ambler Architects, is the first opportunity for the community to have input into the final design of a new Martin Luther King Center, said Derrick Reed, program director.
Ambler Architects from Bartlesville will come in to get feedback from parents and kids from Night Hoops on what they want to see at the new Martin Luther King Center, Reed said. And theyll ask the kids to draw some of their ideas, too. Then they will take those ideas and come back to us with a design.
Reed said its just the beginning of a series of focus sessions with different community groups the architects will hold before presenting the city with a design.
The grand finale of Night Hoops begins tonight. Throughout June and July, Night Hoops has brought more than 300 kids each night on weekends. Derrick Reed said he hopes just as many come tonight and Saturday night.
The festivities begin at 7:30 p.m. today with the beginning of the three-on-three basketball tournament. The tournament continues Saturday after the 5 p.m. focus session with architects, he said.
On Saturday, well have free food for the first 400 people. Well have the Jupiter Jump for the kids, a live DJ and other activities for the kids, as well, Reed said.
Reed said Night Hoops saw a tremendous turnout this summer.
This is giving them something positive to do on the weekends. And it gives them a safe environment too, he said. The Muskogee Police Department provides security, and we had a staff of 19 to manage Night Hoops this year.
Reed said Night Hoops is not only basketball, but there are always other activities going on each night.

New construction projects worldwide are calling for green areas inside and outside buildings creating a pleasing and calming atmosphere. Artificial foliage, including artificial boxwood hedge on walls is being used because it is inexpensive, durable, and requires little maintenance.
Mark Steele, San Diego Architect at M.W. Steele Group, Inc talks about using artificial hedge and foliage in commercial and residential properties. "My wife and I started the San Diego Architect firm 30 years ago and use our house as a ongoing project. What we like about the artificial hedge is that we created a uniform surface where you don't see any seams," Mark added.
Artificial foliage such as artificial boxwood hedge mat not only looks good, but has sound proofing qualities. Artificial hedge mats applied to walls can reduce echoes dramatically. Hedge mat panels placed strategically will deflect sounds from carrying across rooms or courtyards. This decreases stress and increases privacy in an office environment.
The green fad in building design caught on in Berlin, carried in booming Australia, Dubai, and Sao Paulo. Architects globally are using artificial foliage in ever more creative way, combining the green artificial plants with some real ones, rock, marble and water, and glass. The results are pleasing to both eye and ear as people no longer have to shout over one another in spaces with bad acoustics.
Municipalities are also using artificial foliage on sound walls bordering freeways, on school properties, courthouses, and other municipal buildings. Artificial foliage has been proven extremely cost effective and durable. Online retailers of artificial foliage can also provide large quantities of artificial hedge mat, bushes, plants, and flowers at wholesale prices.
Mark Steele, a well known architect at M.W. Steele Group, Inc in San Diego, CA is using artificial hedge for commercial and residential designs. Mark is the Geranium Street Floral Architect of the Month.

Newswise Studio Gang Architects, led by renowned Chicago architect Jeanne Gang, has been selected to design a major new residence hall and dining commons on the north end of the University of Chicago campus, officials announced.
The signature facility, which will house roughly 800 undergraduates, is designed around the Colleges distinctive House System, with an emphasis on building community. Studio Gang will collaborate with Mortenson Construction on the project, which is expected to open in 2016.
Occupying the space where Pierce Tower and Dining Commons now stands, at the corner of 55th Street and University Avenue, the project will create a new gateway connecting the University to the Hyde Park community to the north and enhancing pedestrian flow.
John W. Boyer, Dean of the College, said the project represents a milestone in the development of the Colleges residential life.
The University is far stronger when we create vibrant communities of learning and friendship for our students in our residential system, Boyer said. High-quality collegiate housing, located centrally on the campus, is an enormous asset in supporting the educational goals of the faculty, in developing active and stimulating learning communities among our students, and in encouraging patterns of lifelong friendships among our alumni.
This building embodies our vision for our housing system, said Karen Warren Coleman, Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services. It will serve as an incubator for intellectual and personal development to the benefit of the students who live there and the entire campus community, she said.
The Studio Gang-Mortenson proposal was chosen from among dozens of entries through a rigorous process involving faculty, staff, students, and University and community stakeholders.
This world-class design from Jeanne Gang, one of the most innovative architects of our time, continues our commitment to architecture that cultivates a scholarly community, said Steve Wiesenthal, Associate Vice President and University Architect. We are fortunate to be working with her and her team, and delighted that, after looking around the globe, we found the best answer here in Chicago.
Intimate communities in a big city
Jeanne Gang said the project presents an opportunity to advance the Universitys goals toward a cohesive, sustainable campus populated by great architecture and strong ties to the Hyde Park community.
